What they published was a summary of 9to5mac article and I thought those guys were trustworthy:

However, the article only focuses on iPhone 16, 15 and the rumoured SE 2025, seemingly forgetting that Apple still sell iPhone 13 and 14 too.

Then they try to make a point that nobody would want to buy iPhone 15 once SE is out due to the price difference (with iPhone SE becoming cheaper and more feature-rich than 15). Yet again, going by the same logic, once the new SE is out, iPhone 16 could also be “threatened”.

Unless, of course, Apple change their course radically and reduce the number of iPhone models sold, leaving only 16 Pro, regular 16 and then adding the new SE next spring? This would be a big gamble and a lot of e-waste, however.

On the positive side, though, before AI is ready and rolled out worldwide, we will be well into iPhone 17, if not 18, territory.

Any iPhone under the 15 series is obsolete. if this writing is correct.
But no AI.........Obsolete is correct if AI only. Otherwise, it's a normal upgrade from 15 down to XR. Next year I will upgrade.

Sadly Apple dropped the ball again with this one. tried a Samsung S23 FE and that has some really cool Ai features, including Gemini.

That 9to5mac article asks this at the end…"Do you see any compelling reason to buy an iPhone 15 over the 16 or SE 4?"

Will the iPhone SE4 come in the Pro Max size? Will it have a larger capacity offering than the 15/16 offers? Highly unlikely. So the SE4 is out for me.

Will the iPhone 16 Pro Max be cheaper than the iPhone 15 Pro Max? Highly unlikely. So the 16 series is out for me.

Do I or will I use AI? No. So, the fact that the 16 series offers it is irrelevant to me. I don't even use SIRI, so what do I care about AI.

That leaves the 15. Which they say is likely to become obsolete faster than any other model in history. Really? This is an Apple site? Conveniently they forget about the iPhone 5 and how fast Apple dumped that flagship (which I used for 3.5 years). What about SIRI. Did the introduction of SIRI make the iPhone 4 suddenly obsolete? If it did, then 9to5mac is ignoring history there too.

But then history is inconvenient to flashy headlines. We'll just ignore history so we can stir up trouble, but caveat it just sufficiently so people can't call us on our BS.

This according to the Daily Mail, one of the largest news websites in the world and 9to5mac....

Is this true? Have I missed something?

Another iPhone to become obsolete next month - here's what it means for you https://mol.im/a/13746899

Ok I see your problem. You are reading the Daily Mail….

(To answer your question though, the iPhone 15 will still get the standard 5-7 years of software updates all recent iPhones have gotten. It just won’t be able to do some of the on-device AI stuff that supposedly is getting released with the iPhone 16.)

The Daily Mail is very explicit that it's only the iPhone 15 that gets obsoleted, and that 11-14 will still get iOS 18, so don't fear about your 11PM. ;)
My 11 PM is on the iOS 18 Developer Beta 6 right now, so yeah. :D (I normally don't use betas on my primary iPhone, but I just had to have the dark themed icons).

Although, honestly I took 'obsolete' to mean 'not supported' in the sense that Apple wouldn't support the device any more - which is what happens when Apple actually obsoletes a device. Not just iOS.

Everything younger than iPhone XR and SE 2nd generation will get iOS 18. No exceptions and this is according to Apple, just see the Compatibility section on their iOS 18 page. iPhone 15 is right there at the top of that list:

The thing I am cautious about is relying on hardware to run AI models. With how fast things are changing, who is to say the iPhone 16s are going to be able to run models 2 years from now? Cloud AI is always going to be able to work on any phone connected to the internet. Hardware models will likely become obsolete considering how fast NPUs, chips and models are changing. I would not expect the iPhone 16 models are going to be future proof in that regard. I could see 2 years from now iPhone 16 might not be capable of running everything on-device. That is the gamble I don't think many people are thinking about. We are just now seeing on-device AI capabilities roll out, these devices are the first ones capable, with most new tech (especially AI) things are changing rapidly. I would not expect the on-device to ever be able to keep up with cloud computing and it never will.

Clearly this journalist didn't bother doing some research before writing this article.
Complete BS.

Even my old XR will get iOS 18... I'm running it as we speak.
Except Apple Intelligence, I'm not missing much stuff.

Dude it's the DailyMail, might as well call it a dumpster. I wouldn't trust anything they say.

iOS 18 is very much coming to iPhone 15 and many other phones before it, some features may not come to all phones but that's not new and it's not obsoleting anything.

I would expect the interest in this stuff to be greatly diminished in 2 years anyway.

I think they’ll be a cloud AI like you stated above. I believe (correct me if I’m wrong)my Apple Watch 7 relies on Siri on the phone or a WiFi connection. So I believe this will be similar then over time AI will be functional on older devices. For now I’m more concerned with AI functionality on my home pod and how that will shake out.

I feel like we forum posters have started click-baiting each other.

Like, is someone in here working for the Daily Mail to get them more traction?

You phone is only obsolete once the apps you use are no longer supported on it. My 6S and SE1 are still not obsolete.

Wdym? iOS 18 support goes back to iPhone XR and Apple Intelligence is in its infancy. iPhone 15 will easily work for 4-5 more years from this point with no struggle.

I don’t need iOS to paraphrase my words, nor do I have flight details to share to my family every week. Apple Intelligence is cool, but truly not a must-upgrade-to-get feature for now. Once again, you can access ChatGPT easily on any iPhone anyways.

Looks like they hired a bunch of new interns.

But even for intern level journalism it seems too much. Zero research or knowledge of the topic, some dumb way to bring “analytics”. Gross.

Every schoolboy knows Apple can support devices for eternity. And even when it stops updating to latest and greatest OS new apps will install without issues for at least 3-4 more years. I guess even iPhone 7 is still on latest iOS lol
