If you don't get apple intelligence, basically you're getting bugs.🤣 And people will pay for this.
Companies tryna tell me my phone is obsolete because no AI:

Looks like they hired a bunch of new interns.

But even for intern level journalism it seems too much. Zero research or knowledge of the topic, some dumb way to bring “analytics”. Gross.

Every schoolboy knows Apple can support devices for eternity. And even when it stops updating to latest and greatest OS new apps will install without issues for at least 3-4 more years. I guess even iPhone 7 is still on latest iOS lol
Welcome to the third decade of the 21st Century. This kind of thing is rampant across the Internet. As a life-long journalist it drives me crazy.

That news website has a history of click baiting. Trying to make you believe things which are not true. Here is where we need to clean up this none sense. For a couple of bucks the wonderful apple cleaning cloth will wipe this slate clean.

The SE4 is rumoured to have better specs than the 15 yes.

If you do not consider iPhone 15’s extra camera and a Dynamic Island as a bonus, then yes. However, where would this leave currently sold iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 then? If we go by this logic, once the new SE is out, Apple should discontinue the whole 13-15 lot. This is possible, but then Apple will waste a lot of remaining 13-15 stock and will need to make heaps of iPhones SE for the entry segment buyers.

The 13 won't be sold anymore as soon as iPhone 16 is being released, the 14 might stay on or become axed at the same time. I think Apple would like to move away from the lightning port as soon as they can.
When the SE is being released the 14, SE and maybe 15 will be axed.

I guess its all down to pricing points. If Steve would have been alive he would never have accepted the diverse and complex range of phones being offered. Sure, I understand they want to be able to offer something for everyone but its a bit to much now.
The 13 should have been axed a year ago. Not saying its a bad phone but its not that much cheaper to manufacture than the 14.

It's a clickbait. That's how news earn money. One of the reasons why we see so many negative news and dumb articles is because of clicks.
The more people click on it the more they earn.

I’m sure the tech nerds will mock anyone with a 15 because it won’t have AI…

I got my 15 in January - sure I’m annoyed about this omission but unless they roll out something truly revolutionary, I’ll be keeping the phone for years.

Meanwhile Im still on the 13 not sure if I'll ever upgrade (willingly) again.

Like I can't do this only eSim crap.

I keep a spare phone around (an SE 2020) as a backup. My 13 has AppleCare, but it's not like AppleCare magically comes to my house the moment the phone breaks and gives a replacement/repair on the spot. I got to go, make an appointment, hope they have the part in stock and/or can do the repair/replacement on the spot, wait for the repair to get done and then get my phone back. Meanwhile all thats happening I need to have a phone for work and emergencies because in this day and age a phone is a necessity. I could just take the SIM card out on my broken phone, put it in my backup phone and then be good to go. In the eSim world I have to somehow contact Verizon, pay them a fee, hope they do it and then undo it all once I get my phone back.

It's like we're just going backward in tech, instead of it being simple and easy to use we're just making things a headache when **** goes wrong. Who gives a damn about AI, I don't need AI to write a note or tell me something. I need a phone that works, and software that's not janky, where the only solution is throwing more CPU/memory power on it rather than writing efficient code.

The thing I am cautious about is relying on hardware to run AI models. With how fast things are changing, who is to say the iPhone 16s are going to be able to run models 2 years from now? Cloud AI is always going to be able to work on any phone connected to the internet. Hardware models will likely become obsolete considering how fast NPUs, chips and models are changing. I would not expect the iPhone 16 models are going to be future proof in that regard. I could see 2 years from now iPhone 16 might not be capable of running everything on-device. That is the gamble I don't think many people are thinking about. We are just now seeing on-device AI capabilities roll out, these devices are the first ones capable, with most new tech (especially AI) things are changing rapidly. I would not expect the on-device to ever be able to keep up with cloud computing and it never will.
What does it matter?
Absolutely no one should be buying a device based on what it *might or might not* be able to do in two years.
Also, Apple’s AI does use the cloud as well as on device, a mixture of both. This was made very clear. It’s absolutely not exclusively on device.

I want to ask a question and get this thread on track---are there any plans (that we know of) regarding Apple AI using cloud based services for the iphone 15 and older? Homepod minis?

Not likely - they’ll use the excuse of ram and expect people to go out and buy all new devices.

Thanks for your reply---Sounds like a heck of a gamble---That probably explains why iphone 15s are being "given away" by T-Mobile, ATT and Verizon. There's no way I'm running out to replace all my Apple devices just to get "AI".

Not really though. My wife has a 15, so does my brother. Neither cares about AI. Will they get jealous in 2025 or 2026? Possibly. But what they don't know? They don't miss.

Hmm, this is a bit surprising. I just got the iPhone 15 Pro Max and spent some money on all the accessories. I wasn’t expecting it to be considered obsolete anytime soon. Does anyone have more info on this? I figured Apple would continue supporting it for a while, like they usually do with their recent models.

lol you have nothing to worry about with your phone it is all everybody is talking about the standard 15 and 15 plus not getting Apple Intelligence features because they only have the A16 bionic was 6 GB of ram while the 15 pros have the A17 Pro which has 8 gb of ram which allows apple intelligence to work on the pro models

Amen brother. This whole AI gimmick is cracking me up. More reason for people to have their phone in their face 24/7. People will run and buy a new phone they don’t needand make Apple more money. All for what?

When I read the caption ‘The Daily Mail’ (aka The Daily Fail) which is one of Britain’s trashiest tabloids, I tend not to believe a single word of it.

No iPhone becomes ‘obsolete’ until it doesn’t work anymore, less so a phone that is now only 11 months old. The article is click bait.

Ok so having just joined the group I was wondering if one/some of you techs could explain what my life would be missing out on if I didn’t have AI. I’ve got a 15 plus and like some of you I’ve read the article from the Daily Mail about the possible future of my device. I’m not completely wet behind the ears but I am aware that you guys/girls are far more into this stuff than me. Please be REALLY easy on me. I have had iPhones on and off since the 3G and went the android route for a little while, when, like some people I got more than annoyed with Apples attitude to their consumers. I will point out that I am generally really pleased with my 15.

Silly click bait title from trash "news" source (I'm talking about Daily Mail).

The whole situation sucks for those with a 15/Plus and those phones will hold less value. Apple will probably stop selling the 15 much quicker than previous phones. Even if they don't, when the SE comes out it's going to be a tough sell.

And it's just AI which is mostly over hyped. If you don't care about it then it's not a problem. If you have an iPhone 15/Plus and you're happy with it then great. It's not going to suddenly explode or stop working come September lol.

Apple should be getting called out here for skimping so much on RAM. Not just on iPhones but Macs. It's insane that they are still selling 8GB base models. Mark my words, they will start to move to a 12/16/24GB line up for the Air. If we're lucky then 16/24/36GB.

MBP could go to 12/16/18GB or 16/18/24GB for the 14" and 24/36/48GB for 16".

If the rumours of a cheaper lower powered MacBook lineup is true then that would leave room for them to have 8/12/16GB.

I think you will be totally fine for a natural lifespan of your 15 plus as Apple Intelligence is in its infancy and will be coming out in baby steps. My guess is that by the time AI is ripe and widely available you will be ready to upgrade your iPhone anyway.
