I still think Apple have plans for the Action Button to become the preferred method of activating some new iOS/Siri/AR feature. I don't think they added it just to be a programmable button and that's it. The programmable stuff is a precursor to something a lot more bold.
Lately Apple has done stupid things, but I hope that could be awesome for summon the “new great AI Siri”. Unfortunately I don’t know if Apple will be into generative AI in the short term…
Meanwhile, it could be great to use the action button to activate ChatGPT “conversation mode”

What we need is an AI powered action button that - once triggered - will engage in a loving text message thread with the wife without committing the husband to any future plans

That was my experience with the Apple Watch Ultra. Too easy to accidentally press the button. Was hoping it might be more useful on the phone.
Yep. My flashlight goes on all hours of the day. Too easy to accidentally trigger it on the Watch.

Prepare to hear unsilanced phone notifications everywhere again. To all the people who say “I always keep my phone on silent anyways”: you haven’t been in other countries or around people over 50 much. This is going to be such an annoying step backwards.

Could've done it with the entire 15 lineups, honestly. What's the hold up.. it's just a button, not "Pro" feature. So typical.

Please Apple, include a slightly smaller iPhone 16 on the lineup. A 5.8” iPhone would be handy enough, and the perfect size for me. The regular 15 is already too big for many of us (I see people on the bus doing hand acrobatics when using them with just one hand), and the 16 Pro will be even bigger…

I really love my SE3 but I guess at some point I’ll need to upgrade.

They changed a unique and useful feature that made iPhone special to a generic button and sold it as a “feature”.

The action button. 2 months later and its only use for me is accidentally putting my iPhone in a focus while trying to change the volume.
I’m still salty about the power button on the side. It’s been never ending screenshots since.

I'll bet against that. Apple just has a fetish for removing moving parts.

Last, putting a piece of grip tape over the Volume Up button, has helped me confuse the buttons much less. Wish Apple would add something to make them distinguishable. And no, the smaller size Action Button does not help, especially when rushing to take a photo.
They should go back to the round volume buttons of the 5. Those were perfectly discernible by touch.

When I eventually get an iPhone with an Action Button, I think I'll use it to instantly grab the connection to my AirPods. Better than a swipe and a couple of taps to do it.

I had no idea this was even a pro only feature…. All I know is I’m constantly activating an accessibility feature while just trying to turn the volume up now…

Initially I was using the Action Button for the same Mute switch. But when I took the time to set up Shortcuts, it’s been a game changer. Actually a very useful addition to the iPhone for me and the fact it can be used to launch shortcuts from a locked screen makes it even more useful. IMG_1195.png

Upgrade activists at Apple will never give you 120hz display when $200 cheap Androids have it. It’s getting beyond laughable.

Not saying the Action Button may not be useful to some, but having it replace a physical mute button that provided instant tactile (as in I can tell the state by touch in a meeting) feedback of the state of mute is just another indication that Apple continues to value form over function in its designs, end user be damned. I’ve owned iPhones since the first one, but it’s hard to get excited about all these gimmicky features when they bork up basic things, like the freaking phone mute.
