PSA about Apple tech woven case: dropped my iPhone 17 Pro from about 4 feet or less as I fumbled getting it out of my running arm band. It landed face down on a paved, running trail. Caused the damage to the frame at the top and the display in three places. I could see also the rough spot on the case lip. I returned the case the next day.

The top part of this case has a little bit more flex than i expected. I’m sure this is because of the large cut out for the plateau. This could be a problem with other cases that don’t have some structure around the camera lenses.

I see no point to get a $60 case that cannot protect your phone from a drop like this.

So I've tried

Apple clear case
Pitaka Ultra slim
Suti phoneback
Matter phoneback
ARC Pulse

My ranking best to worst

ARC Pulse: Why didn't I get this sooner? I think i'm going to grab an arc pulse everytime I purchase a new phone. It not only provides protection compared to phone backs but its super light (17-18g?).

SUTI Clear phoneback : Even though mine came damaged and took over 2 weeks to arrive, it feels great on the phone and isn't as thick as the Matter one. No protection on the front but adds a nice grip to the back of the phone.

Pitaka Ultra Slim : Feels good in the hand although resting my pinky near the USB port didn't feel smooth. Felt a little sharp. Maybe its cause I'm so used to phonebacks? Also, removing the phone from the case can snap the case cause its so thin.

Matter Phoneback: Thicker and heavier than Suti's. Mine came with a defect where the phoneback wobbles left and right on the lower half. With enough pressure, you can forcefully cause the phone back to come off.

Apple Clear Case: Too slippery, felt like a bar of soap.

My Caudabe Sheath for iPhone Air shipped out on Friday.

I’m using a Ridge case in the meantime and it’s almost a perfect case except the lip/camera protector sits flush with the camera so I doubt it can handle drops that perfectly hit it. Also, the MagSafe magnets are too strong. It takes a good amount of effort to remove my MagSafe wallet. It also lifts my MagSafe charger out the mount on my bedside table. At my office desk, it actually broke my 3D printed mount in half that I’ve been using no problem for 2 years.

So on my 17 pro max, I've been using a lonli edition blue case the last few days. At 40g I thought it was a little heavy and bulky, but otherwise very comfy: The leather feels great in the hand, the buttons are fantastic, though there is a little play in the camera button, and the plateau edge is covered in leather and sits great on a table without sliding around.

That said, it was expensive, and I had the opportunity to get a belemay leather case very cheap. It feels shinier, the plastic plateau trim just barely goes past the cameras so it offers minimal protection (but it does offer protection!), and because the plateau trim is plastic, the phone effortlessly slides around the table. The buttons are terrible, and the power button had zero feel at all when I first used it....

Then I tried to take the dang thing off. I had to use some plastic coupon cards I had laying around because THAT STUBBORN THING JUST DID NOT WANT TO COME OFF!! ARGH! It makes me never ever want to use a case on my phone ever again. Ever!
