it's about damn time. When even sub $200 android devices have 90hz displays, its laughable apple is still gatekeeping 120hz behind the "pro" moniker with the prices they charge for their base model iphones.

If they do this, other than the cameras, I wonder how they will differentiate the standard from the pro models going forward. Especially since they set the precedent of using (essentially) the same processor on the standard and pro models.
Ram, (since apple loves to gatekeep that as well). will probably put a "lesser" chip in (like with less cores).

So what will Apple add to the Pro and Pro Max phones to keep them special? More memory? Camera improvements? Those seem a bit geeky with limited general consumer appeal.

Perhaps something with the notch? Apple Pencil compatibility? Split screen multi tasking?
UltraMotion ~ 240hz?

If you were to ask a typical iPhone user about their screens refresh rate, very very few would know or care. Higher refresh capability is nice and the tech has matured to be on lower end devices. But it’s far from a critical feature for most people. Most people don’t even know.

In addition to an iPhone, I have an Android phone with a 120Hz screen. Funny that it is (by OS default) set to 60Hz, and when you want to switch it to the higher refresh rate, you have to click through a warning that it will cut back on battery life.

Really looking forward to Apple switching to 120 (if the above rumor is true), and hearing the new complaints being about how long the battery lasts 🤣

Imo the iPhone 14 should've been the last iPhone to feature a 60Hz panel. Not because everyone absolutely needs it, but because the starting price of these phones is way too high for them to still come with 60Hz panels.
What should the price of a 60hz base iPhone be to make it a fair deal?

Exactly. At least the websites like MR should do it. Just name 120 Hz and ProMotion as separate things. Like ProMotion can do VRR to 1 Hz or something and the display also has a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz. Associating 120 Hz with “Pro” has been dumb for years.
"ProMotion" is Apple's branding, not MR's. If MR decided to stop calling it that and use different phrases, that's going to lead to reader confusion. Especially when people read about a product release elsewhere that describes a device as having a ProMotion screen, but they come to MR and they call it something different.

I held off upgrading my 13 Pro in the end. I’m so used to 120hz (scrolling text & reading - very noticeable!) & wanted a bigger screen. The only option is a 16PM… and it’s crazy expensive once I add in apple care , screen protector, case as well.

So here’s hoping the 17 will have it (ideally there will still be a plus model or air etc to get a bigger screen). And likely to be more RAM and better cameras too. Just another 10months ish to go lol.

Considering the new mini, lets see how thin and light the :apple: can make iPhone Air. So light and thin a gust of wind can blow it out of the user’s hand and float to the ground like a feather.

If you were to ask a typical iPhone user about virtually most of the technology in the iPhone they wouldn't know or care but this doesn't mean that it shouldn't be present. You mention it's not a critical feature, that is totally irrelevant, critical or not people knowing or not.

Pro-motion is 120hz Variable Refresh rate so it adapts to what you are viewing and adjusts the refresh rate to save battery e.g if your looking at static text then it drops to almost 1 hz.

On the lower end Android phones (like my dads £180 One Plus Nord) they have Fixed 120 hz screens so always refreshing at 120 hz no matter what you are doing, and so this consumes more battery power. The mid range Android phones and above do have screens similar to Promotion though, which saves battery power.

about time it happened but makes you wonder they will need to push more to pros to make the gap big enough again

That’s one thing people forget about is refresh rate isn’t the only spec for a display. Cheap android phones might have 120 Hz displays but they look much worse than the iPhone 60 Hz display

Pro motion.

Is it pro? It’s pro because we SAY it’s pro.

Anyone remember ProDOS? The 16 bit version was extra good.

It wasn’t really even “Pro” then but it was better than the old Apple II OS.

There becomes a time to let certain tech trickle down and just stop calling it a “Pro” feature.

Is the 17 series still going to have the huge outmoded notch (ahem I mean the dynamic island)?

It's the latest iDontCarePhone with new probably less capable modems at a price that we know will make it so cheap to build as we don't have to pay Broadcom and Qualcomm for decent modems. Also don't don't forget that October event with the all new iMac with a new and improved M4 chip that replaces a one year old M3 version, now that was scary fast!

Also marvel at the new Mac TeenyTiny, it may suck in the warm air it just vented out but who knows, we don't! We can't wait to say only a small number of devices are effected again if there are issues, as we put out a patch to slow the M4 and M4 Pro especially. You too may end up with our best in class throttling issues if they do happen and thats anyones guess right now.

Apple, It just sort of works. ;)
