Actually, djmx is running on old information. I too have top-notch sources at Apple & ATT, and everyone at that level knows by now that iPhone 3.0 is in the works already. This week a new executive-level push to advance the phone and capitalize off current popularity made the old iPhone 2.0 plans outdated before it made it to manufacturing.

iPhone 3.0, my upper-level buddies all tell me, will be lighter, have a brighter screen, run iLife and iWork, will be considerably thinner than 2.0, and will incorporate a longer-life battery. It will contain a consumer-pluggable localization module that will make it easy to swap out technologies for handling different carriers in different countries (calling that technology iLocal). My various sources tell me with absolute confidence that this is not a rumor and will definitely be announced within weeks of Leopard launch.

This is absolutely not a rumor and should be considered the gospel of truth. You'll see soon enough. djmx was right with his post, except his sources don't go as high as mine... he's not as "in the know" as me, apparently.

If you haven't purchased an iPhone yet, I'd wait until 3.0 comes out in October so you can take advantage of new features like multi-track editing on a 3.5" screen via Garage Band for iPhone, or that new iLocal international module feature, so you can enjoy your iPhone in South Bay, or the outer banks of Mongolia.

I highly doubt that art employees know what apple is doing.. Hell they barely knew anything about the iPhone Friday when it launched. There won't be a revision that soon other than software. Othewise there will be some pissed off customers.

Djmx, if you want to post stuff you are hearing, there are better ways to say things like "This isn't a rumor, it's a fact"

When you say that, people will want proof.

Expecting people to just take your word (while spelling every other word incorrectly) WHILE you say it isn't a rumor....it a little absurd

We know when the 3G iphone will come out. Its whenever there are more power efficient 3G chips available. As Apple has said they didn't go 3G because the chips suck up too much juice.

When new chips are available, it will be all over the rumor sites. Until then, these claims are bogus.

I just wish we could have had an option. Those without 3g coverage in their area could have gone with Edge and those who don't mind the battery suck in favor of 3g could have bought the 3g version. Bonus for if the battery was removeable.

I just wish there was a 3g option/version. I want to pick my own poison.
But I really would like to see the agreement between Apple & AT&T. Want to know if it's for "any and all versions of iPhone" or just "this" version.

NO WAY!

This has to be what all the reports are about lately, Mac OS XI 11.3 Dalmatian and PowerBook G187's will both be released on the same day! Wow. Amazing. ;)

I haven't read all the crap being flung in this thread, but I do want to add that my Cingular/AT&T rep whom I have been going to for years has also said that she heard from one of their engineering groups that an HSDPA iPhone should be available in early Dec in time for Christmas. I normally don't put a whole lot of stock in stuff like this (generally because it's unlikely any AT&T rep would know), but she's always let me know accurately in advance about new BlackBerry models and the like, usually before they appear anywhere on the Internet. That, and it looks like multiple sources are now pointing to early December for a rev B iPhone. I'm not saying that's definite, but it's promising. It also makes sense that an AT&T engineering group would know about it now, because if it is using one of the new HSDPA radios then they would have to be testing and tuning it before submission to the FCC, which will have to happen at least several months before it launches.

you mean "I'm done with this drama, believe it or not."

no one is going to take you seriously when your posts look like you just bashed your head against the keyboard and hit "send"

my seven year old can form better sentences than you can.

iphone 2.0 by dec? possibly, but would I believe someone who throws sentences together like hellen keller? nope.

thats great I will upgrade without a problem!! Im glad I didnt wait that is for sure...I have mine in my hand while you have your UMMMMM in yours:D

Is it that hard to type out "people"?? I don't understand why you continue with the horrid grammar and spelling.

Here is a lesson for you
ppl is actually spelled "people"
dono is actually spelled "don't know"
bout is actually spelled "about"

Its really nice the Apple brought you a :apple:TV after lunch.

Please learn proper English and USE IT

Hence why I, for one, did not read this whole thread. I still felt the need to throw in my two cents though.

Grammar does matter, people. Personally, if I have to expend any brain power trying to translate your post into real English, I don't read it. I don't understand why half of the Internet population feels like it's acceptable or necessary to sound like a blithering idiot when they write. Or is it just that you never made it past third grade?

My question is if they go to HSDPA, does the current iPhone have the appropriate guts to upgrade without buying a whole new phone?

the morning of the launch att reps had yet to lay eyes on the device. If Apple had their way att reps wouldn't be a part of the equation. Not sure why anyone would think they are apprised of apples secret plans.

Well, one line of reasoning would be that, like it or not, Apple is going to have to work with AT&T to bring out an HSDPA iPhone. AT&T controls the high-speed wireless network. Apple can't do it without them. No one (at least not me) was saying the reps got their hands on them. The report I got from a rep was relayed from an AT&T engineering team, which logically may very well -- indeed, MUST -- have access to prerelease devices.

I don't expect a 3g US version until Macworld 08 at the earliest. If it comes out sooner, I may not buy a new one right away. I am very pleased with EDGE. If the space though gets to around 16 gigs, I might jump at it.

I do expect a steady steam of software updates though (games, to-do-list, custom ringtones...etc)

It's been confirmed... u'll see it when u believe it. it is called iPhone 2.0 u can believe or don't...i said wut i heard from my friend who works at apple. it's been announced.

Yea I'll c it when I believe it. Wut u think I'm joking? Pls. iPhone 2.0 going 2 b the bom. Its like ipod but makes cell calls.

There's no way they would call it the iPhone 2.0. That's probably just it's code name.

Want proof?

They don't call the iPod, the iPod 5.5
Or the Nano 2.0.
Or the Shuffle 2.0.

I love when the little people come in and act like they have sources with big companies. Seriously, stop it. No one is going to believe you.

Well if we do get a 3G iPhone anytime soon they have to figure out the Qualcomm ban in the U.S. before we see one that chipset.

Guess they could use another.........just not sure what is equal.

Unless there is a revolutionary breakthrough in either battery technology or UMTS chipsets, its a stretch to say that there will be a european 3G phone this december. Infact, it will be a resounding NO.

Oh yeah, these chipsets and batteries would have already had to been released well in advance for development--so far in advance that the current iphone would have had this magic battery and/or chipset. You cant just drop a WCDMA chipset in 5 days before it goes to production. I would imagine a european launch this winter would probably need to hit the factory...uh..now?

I also don't understand why people think there are folks walking around with OC12's in their pockets in europe and asia, pulling data from an unlimited bucket of happiness that costs 10 USD/month. Thats not the case. European voice and data services are expensive and metered. asian services are on par with american systems using the CDMA EVDO glory.

In any place, unlimited plans are more of an american thing. Adoption to new systems is slower than one would think too.

There used to a be a time when europe was ahead, but honestly, all carriers have money, and all customers have learned what data service is. AT&T can buy the same UMTS hardware that hits the market as the european carriers--at the same time.

A couple years back, a japanese cellular carrier (guess which one) launched an impressive UMTS 3G network with features such as video calling. Only about 300,000 customers signed on to the service after about a year. Guess what everybody else was using in 2004? 1xRTT. Yeah. That old sprint stuff launched in 2000. How did NTT finally push those stubborn users onto their new system? They stopped all new subscriptions to the 1xRTT system (AT&T TDMA style), forcing all new users to the faster, more expensive system they invested in. A majority of japan doesnt use those flashy handsets you see at the japanese trade shows. They use cheap POS handsets and SMS... it was depressing when my buddy over in japan came home with a PHS phone.

UMTS deployments in both europe and the united states have almost mirrored each other. 3G in europe was basically on hold in lieu of UMTS hardware for a while -- a time when Sprint and Verizon had already launched EVDO systems. We actually got this 3G stuff first! It was funny because due to nasty regulatory issues, european carriers wouldnt even bring in CDMA if they wanted to (and they did!). They eventually deployed the UMTS systems about the same time as ATT/Cingular did.

Europe is in the same GSM boat as the united states. 3 1/2 broken handsets of UMTS battery sucking glory. Its too bad because TMobile over in europe (who spend $650/customer deploying the system) is watching the stuff rot off the tower. GSM TDMA service, GPRS, and EDGE still have a majority of the users.

Would be nice to see someone use the infrastructure, but the iPhone has soo many power gobbling features bursting out, i really dont think people would put up with 12 hours of battery life. And since EDGE and WCDMA have entirely different air interfaces, it would add extra space--something of which doesnt exist looking at some of the disection photos.

EDGE isnt that bad though....with the qualcomm drama taking place, everyone's "iPhone killer" is bound to be delayed as their importation is blocked :) Go Apple!
