Hi Guys!

Just thought to drop in and check if anyone of you have restored your iPhone 3G yet? I also noticed that my new iPhone 3G had a yellowish screen, but after I did a restore (due to other reasons though), the screen looks to be even better than my iPhone 2G!

When I did the restore via iTunes, it downloaded a new version of the firmware (2.0, 5A347) and after the restore it looks like the colors are fine! I could be wrong here, but at least it seems so. The shipping firmware on the iPhone 3G is (to my knowledge) 2.0 5A345. After the restore, I didn't load up the previous backup, just to make sure that everything is reseted. I only care about my calendar entries and contacts, which will be thrown to the phone when you sync it.

If you guys can see any difference after a restore, please report! Oh, and be sure to backup & sync before the restore. :) Otherwise you'll loose all your contacts etc. Please also ensure that your new firmware is 2.0 (5A347) after the restore. I can be viewed from Settings -> General -> About.

I don't use the dynamic brightness setting in the iPhone.

Can all the people who think their screens are "yellow tinted" list:

1. Where you bought the iPhone? Apple/AT&T? What city/country?
2. Which model did you get? 8gb/16gb white/16gb black?
3. Have you tried the factory restore? (See two posts up) Did it work?
4. Are you planning to take it back?

the touch screen on my nintendoDS has a yellow tint but the top screen is ok maybe it has something to do with the iphone 3g's touch screen

Seriously, none of you guys are doing this right. Thing number one, you shouldn't compare the iPhones to each other, but rather individually to a known good high quality monitor set to a color rendition that you prefer. Then you compare each iPhone to your reference display. This is really the only way to do it as when you compare the two iPhone side by side your perception of one iphone's color is always going to be skewed by the color of the other one, almost like an optical illusion.

1. APPLE -USA
2. 16, white
3. Yes
4. Yes- cashing out. $300+ phone + $100/month....I am not going to play this game anymore. I am moving on.

Ok, my co worker just got one, and I have his 3g and my 1st gen right here on my desk. Everybody here just confirmed, it has a yellowish tint and it looks awful compared to to first gen.

I was def going to get one after work, now I'll wait...

And to all those who say "tint" looks better, hey its good to be a fanboy, I mean we're all fanboys here to a degree, but actually saying it looks better is just retarded!

it looks washed out compared to 1st gen. And that's that.
Sad but true...

Well, I'm bored do I gave it a try. I was on build 5A345 but restoring took me up to 5A347. However the screen is the same.

Just a quick FYI,

one user already did the restore idea/fix I posted about, and he said that it fixed the yellow-screen issue for him as well (or then his eyes are playing tricks on him). Hopefully more people give it a go and post their findings here! Would be nice to know for a fact. :)

My 16GB 3G has a definite yellow cast to it. It is severe enough that I was aware of it as soon as I got it home. Comparing it side by side to my original iPhone only made it more apparent. Has anyone had success calling Apple for a solution?

Trying restore now
If Restore does not work, will definitely be looking into a replacement unit.

Interesting! My screen got much better, and I also have one report from another user who also said that his screen is more "white" and more close to the 2G iPhone (if not even better). :/

I'm going to try it again, as I restored from my last backup when I tried it.

Will let you know how it goes.

The restore seemed to work for me. And it does reveal the iPhone classic has a blueish tint.

Great! Thanks for trying it out. :) I didn't restore from my previous backup as I wanted everything to be 100% clean. You know, just be absolutely sure and knowing that there can't be any leftovers which might screw things up.

If this doesn't fix the yellowish issue for you, then we need to come up with other ideas. Oh, and it also proves that my eyes aren't to be trusted.

wow. after seeing all the images, its almost an optical illusion.

when people see them side by side, its hard NOT to say the 3g screen looks "yellow."

But it appears that the original iPhone really just has an overly blue tint.
Definitely not accurate when it comes to colors, but i suppose more appealing than "yellow"

looking at the 3g alone, it looks like a neutral white.
but put it next to a blue tinted phone, then yea.... it looks "yellow"

so it seems us iphone newbies won't be able to complain much not having an original iphone to compare it to. just from the pictures i've seen i dont mind the color difference.

no ****. the phone only costs $175 to make, but at&t still gets more money.

You're not allowed to say "no ****" when he was just saying that your statement about the 3g costing Apple more money to make than the original iPhone was untrue.

Your statement was still untrue
