What does bother me is the fact that O2 and Apple have worked together for around 2 years now, and O2 still do not understand Apple customers.

Actually the funny thing is I think O2 do know Apple's customers quite well, a bunch of loyal fanatical fan-bois who will buy whatever is released and at whatever price. Apple customers have already proven time and time again they will pay well over market rates for products, O2 are just milking them for all they are worth. Doesn't mean I won't be getting a 3GS, but don't kid yourself..they are in business for 1 reason...

Sorry for this, but I don't have sympathy for upgraders. I understand you want the latest, but you can't break a legal document for free. I think O2 are on firm ground.

BUT, it's the new market that is astounding. O2 are openly, flagrantly defying Apple's business plan to open the iPhone user base.

I posted this on another thread, but it's better here:

Today iPhone 3G 16Gb on £35pm plan: £57.74. Next week iPhone 3G 8Gb on £35pm plan £96.98

That's the real story and shock. I'm glad the BBC and Guardian are picking this up now.

No no, your quoting prices from contracts of different lengths! The 16gb is £57.74 on £35 per month for 24 MONTHS! The 8gb phone is FREE on a £35 24 month contract! It's only £97.86 on an 18 MONTH CONTRACT! The 16gb is £160 on an 18month £35 contract... So no real scandal as your making out!

Just to report back, my original iPhone sim gets a 3g signal in an iPhone 3g, so any original iPhone owners who want to buy a PAYG 3GS and put their old sim into it should be OK.

Disclaimer: check this with your own sim before you spend the money!

Sorry, not quite correct that.

Urban Myth, even when repeated to death on the internet, still doesn't make it law.

Busted!

It is the law. And in the UK you have a 5 year guarantee on any electrical goods bought.

It was on BBC news a few weeks ago.

If you carry on paying your original contract after it's end date, you will still be paying a subsidy for a phone that is already paid off.

It's worth looking at the Simplicity 30 day SIM only deals. £19.58 per month gets you 600 minutes, 1200 texts and an unlimited web bolt on.

I doubt it. This was the queue 10 minutes before the 3G went on sale at the Bullring Apple Store.

The bullring opens at 9.30 but can you get in before that? Those people in the photo, were they just first from the main entrance to the apple store or what?

It's not a simple as that!

Well I don't know all the details, but I watched an interview on the BBC news channel with a woman from Watchdog or something. She said as long as its a manufacturing fault, and you can prove that, you have a 5 year guarantee.

Probably been asked already but this thread is 21 pages long so haven't read all of it but i live in swindon and theres an Apple store, Carphone warehouse and an O2 store, well anyway i have work till 1.30pm on the 19th of june what are the chances of me being able to get hold of a phone on the day?

I haven't seen anywhere to reserve a phone but did see a rumor that at some point tomoro you will be able to reserve on the CPW website, but only contract handsets, anyone know if this is true?

I'm gonna be getting a 16GB white phone on an 18 month contract i think, was contemplating the Paygo but still not sure, theres deff pros and cons so still have a week to think about it, unless the reserve rumor is true and i can reserve a contract phone tomoro.

Cheers English :)

They had opened up early that day for the Apple Store and the O2 shops in the bullring.

I took that photo when I first got there at 7:50 and that was the entire queue. When the shop opened just after 8 there were another 5 or 6 people behind me.

There will always be people willing to spend a bit more than things are worth to get the latest stuff. I thought it was worth spending £269 and £35 a month for the original phone and I thought it was worth extending my contract for another 18 months to get a 3G, I'm not going to spend (£35 x 6) + £184.98 just to get a slightly better phone.
O2 certainly misjudged me, and am sure I'm not alone, I didn't expect to upgrade for free, just to be able to buy a locked to O2 iphone for what it was worth, just like we all did with the original.
I don't think O2 will gain many new customers with the 3GS so Apple won't be happy and their exclusive contract might get less exclusive.

Oh, I see, my mistake. BUT I am right in that for the 3G S, there are no price reductions in buying into iPhone like the US, and that is against Apple Business Strategy, and that's what the BBC and Guardian are publishing.

Vodafone strong rumour

I know there's a strong rumour of Vodafone also getting the iPhone in the very near future. I spoke to O2 today and had a very honest chat with a CSA and said I fully appreciate what a contract is but mentioned a lot of their customers are up in arms on forums like this and on their own forum regarding upgrading, I also said a lot will hold and go to Vodafone when they do get it, and O2 really are shooting themselves in the foot.

She'd also heard this and said my feedback will be taken forward.

If people stick to their guns and make O2 realise nobody is going to pay these prices they'd have to lower them just for the business to come in.

Was last year - you can park up early in the underground car park and come up into the Bull Ring, or just walk in. Some seating if you're there first next to the Apple Store.

You can now pre-order at mobiles.co.uk, one of the many online mobile sites The Carphone Warehouse owns. Says if you order now they will dispatch 18th June with Next Day Delivery.

http://www.mobiles.co.uk/apple-iphone-3gs.html

Think I might wait for the actual Carphone Warehouse site to offer pre-orders though if its meant to be tomorrow.

Any news on whether Apple will allow PAYG preorders?

I'm sticking with my 3G for now, my contract isn't up until January. And I'm considering at that point moving onto Simplicity. 600 minutes, 1200 texts and the unlimited web bolt-on included for £20pm - that's £15 less which if I feel like it, I could spend on the internet tethering bolt-on.

Do you lose visual voicemail if you move to Simplicity?

IMHO, it wont really count when it comes down to the iPhone. Very few phones will have an manufacturing fault which if it does will be identified within days which this type of guarantee is supposed to cover. Accidental damage such as scratches and broken screen is another type of cover which apple provides.

Vodafone strong rumour

So I think O2 are trying to make as much money as possible before they lose their exclusivity rights to Vodafone or the competition of Vodafone. That's business for ya.
