Still Id rather look like a new customer, get it home and hey presto, transfer it over myself.

Also I want to give apple my money instead of O2, as i generally believe telecoms company are not regulated enough in the UK.

Is the iphone gs availible from apple yet ?

does anyone know if there will be enough stock delivered to the o2 stores ? or will it be a matter of get there at opening and hope that they have some left ?

O2 are claiming they'll have sufficient supplies so it's up to you if you believe O2. ;)

I'm hoping supplies are easier to come by this time as I'll be in the US on launch day. Don't want to spend the week after i get back trying to hunt down a 3GS.

Pre-order was supposed to be the 10th.

As far as I was aware....

Kinda thought it would be there at 9am this morning.

I'm thinking of getting the day off and getting to a store though. Oh I don't know. I just want one.

I went into my local O2 store this morning, to ask about putting my name down for a pay&go 16GB 3GS, she told me theres no list and that it would be unlikely that they will get much stock on the 19th. Very negative to be honest, I would have thought O2 staff would be more keen to help. Come back on the 19th I was told.

Subsequently, I called my local Apple store yesterday and they have put me on a contact list, and apparently I will receive a call a day or two before the 19th to tell me when to come in to the Apple store on the 19th to get my 3GS.

Fingers crossed at this point, can't believe I'm going to blow £440 on a phone - lol. :D But I would much rather give my money to Apple than O2, the people in the Apple store are always very helpful.

My only concern is that I am working until midday on 19th, and won't beable to queue for early opening.

Does anyone know if the UK Apple stores are doing a midnight launch on the Thursday night ?

Do you really think there's gonna be queues this time round? I'm not sure I do.

The majority of iPhone users I know are all in contract until the winter and they certainly won't be 'upgrading' early given the costs involved. You also just need to take a look at the official O2 and the O2Fail twitter pages to see how pissed off people are with O2 over their pricing, not to mention all the other negative press that has been given regarding the costs.

I can however understand why O2 don't want to upgrade people early. They'd lose a vast amount of money which is not much cop when you're a business and trying to make money.

Contracts don't concern me though. I'd never fall into that trap again. I've been contractless for a good 2 years or so now. Plus, it's likely the iPhone will be upgraded each year so to me, signing up to a 24 month deal is short sighted anyway if you want the latest/greatest. I'd much rather use the simplicity SIM and pay for the phone up front. I am free to sell when I like and can cancel my deal in 30 days. I get 1000 texts, 600 mins talk time and unlimited data, all for the princely sum of £20 per month. IMO, O2 should be offering 12 and 18 month deals instead of 24 month deals.

So, I don't expect a run on the O2 stores this time round - I might be wrong - but I just can't see it especially with the financial downturn almost everyone is being hit by. Those who can afford it, or even those who can't but will still buy it, will likely be few and far between compared to the 3G sales. I also think a lot of people will be satisfied with the 3.0 update. This iPhone update smacks of being an inbetweeny anyway and I'd like to know what the odds are for a new one being announced - or at least some changes to either he specs/prices when the iPod Touch is updated in September (if indeed it is updated).

Anyone know if the SIM from an original iPhone will work in the 3GS? If it would, I could do the "buy PAYG and drop in your old SIM" option. I'll prob. go for another contract anyway (already eligible to upgrade) but I'm just considering my options...

Will just happen to pass my local apple store, in the morning.

I have to agree, I really don't for see queues or shortages this time around. Even the True Fan's are not so impressed, so I doubt the general public will be as hot to the stores.

I suspected the 3GS may appear for many in stockings either December or belated Christmas.

My twopence on this UK saga

1) Upgraders-- what did you expect on a subsidised phone?

2) Apple's strategy is to entice new users and make the iPhone more available. The US prices are excellent, really. O2 is going against Apple's busines plan, so I doubt they'll get any exclusivity renewal.

3) O2 are in a closed market. But by making these prices at this time, they MUST know their exclusivity deal has at least 18-20 months to run.

4) As an O2 customer without an iPhone who wants one - and waiting for the 3rd gen - the 3G S is just about worth it, although I'd certainly not recommend any current 3G users to upgrade. The camera still stinks and the form could be better. (There should be no need for a case!)

It's not an urban myth at all. I covered this in coursework 9 years ago when I studied law. Have a read of the Guarantees Directive (1999/44/EC) if you want to see the proof.

As I said, law, and reality on the shop floor are two completely different things.

Try getting your 18 month old Apple product repaired under warranty., and see what I mean. You can stand there all day untilyoure blue in the face, it wont get you anywhere. Letters and post-incident correspondance might....

I'm not disagreeing with you. far from it,, but in the UK, unless youre prepared to kick off, you wont get your rights.

Otherwise, why would Apple only put, in print, you have one year warranty and tell their staff to adhere to this.

I've had an update on the pre-order situation and PAYG situation from the Carphone press office.

Pre-orders will start around midday tomorrow on their website - for CONTRACT CUSTOMERS ONLY.

PAYG however will be available from launch, and they're anticipating lots of stock of each handset.

Notice I said 'anticipating'.

Right guys, sorry if I'm repeating the same question, but just to make sure, if I buy a 3GS from the Apple online store, my current iPhone 3G o2 sim card will work in it ok? Also, when will the preorders go live on Apple?

£30 Per Month top up

On the 3g iphone pay as you go it was my understanding that in order to claim the unlimited internet and wi-fi you had to top the phone up £30 per month. Can anyone tell me if this is true and if so will it continue for the 3gs as it would then work out cheaper to get an 18 month contract at £29.98

I have already spoken to O2 reps yesterday, arrange to get my pac code as i was taking the route of ending my contract early BUT according to that link that someone posted as O2 had updated their information, you have to make a one off payment to end your contract! Well i was told that when my number is pacd over thats when a final bill is generated & will be sent to me & i have 14 days to pay it. What im worried about is that i may not be accepted on a new contract!! Does a good payment history with O2 count?

Yes, the SIM card will work. Have a look towards the bottom of this page for confirmation (option 2).

Cant answer your question about pre-orders though!

Not sure on that. It all depends if the SIM that came with the original iPhone supports 3G.

All the way through from me having my first mobile I just swapped the SIMs over, but when I got my first 3G phone (k800i) I had to get a new SIM as my old one didn't support 3G networks (and orange managed to take ages to sort out transferring the number grr).

Best way to find out would be put that SIM in a known 3G phone and see if it gets a 3G signal. :)

Anyone know if its possible to get the 32GB 3G PAYGO without the 12months data included ? As I'll be using the SIM from my 16GB 3G (which I'll then flog on).

All depends on initial stock to O2. Queues are likely, if the initial levels are low. Presuming you're a new customer, you're better off going to an Apple store as they will have a much better inventory. Local O2 store I went to had 2 16GB models the first week. They went to people in the queue at about 5:30amish.

O2 didn't have a clue till a few weeks after the iPhone 3G launch...

Ok thanks! What happens in December when my 18 month contract expires, and I have the 3GS? Will I have too renew it?

As far as I know, you simply continue paying the same monthly fee if you want to continue on the same terms, or you're free to cancel at any time as you are past the minimum contract term.

Alternatively, you would be able to switch to PAYG, or upgrade when the next iPhone is released!

I'm sure someone will soon correct if that is wrong!

I think the iPhone 3GS is genius. How often do we get a new piece of software or a hardware update but functionality suffers a ton because it was rushed to market or the processor speed didn't increase to match the software requirements?

Not so, apparently, with the 3GS. Yes, some may think of it as a rehash, but honestly, the iPhone is so far ahead of everything else that Apple doesn't NEED to release anything better. This is why competition is always good for the consumer. THAT said, my biggest complaint with the iPhone 3G has been the speed. It's just not that fast. In fact, my iPhone 3G is noticeably slower than my original iPhone, even doing basic tasks like opening the contact list or listing my text messages. The 3GS is just a very solid evolution, by all accounts, of the 3G. Oleophobic screen, faster, nifty compass (VERY useful when walking), double the storage etc etc. This really is the ultimate iPhone. I'm quite happy to have a more stable, faster version of my 3G iPhone. And next year, maybe something will be able to compete, and we'll get a significant upgrade that will appease the naysayers.

If you carry on paying your original contract after it's end date, you will still be paying a subsidy for a phone that is already paid off.

It's worth looking at the Simplicity 30 day SIM only deals. £19.58 per month gets you 600 minutes, 1200 texts and an unlimited web bolt on.

Do you think there will be anybody queuing over night, I am getting up early to get one.

I doubt it. This was the queue 10 minutes before the 3G went on sale at the Bullring Apple Store.

Also I want to give apple my money instead of O2, as i generally believe telecoms company are not regulated enough in the UK.

UK has the best iphone monthly plans in the G7 countries. Outside the G7 and within the industrial countries, only Hong Kong has a better deal.

You don't need a bunch of idiotic regulations in the UK --- because there are 5 national carriers in the UK. Hong Kong, the best iphone deal in the world, has 6 carriers.

Just look at France, a bunch of idiotic regulations on how to give unlocking codes, a regulator (and the court sided with them) that forced the end of iphone exclusivity --- the iphone monthly plans are still super expensive. Why? Because France has only 3 national carriers, all French owned, and zero foreign company competing in their telecom market.

You should just pray that T-Mobile doesn't get out of the UK market.
