Did you request to have your phone held at a hub or store? Or will it be getting delivered to your home? If so, that may be why it got delayed.

It seems like AT&T customers got the bad end of the stick. Not sure if thats you but thats what the trend has been looking like.
If you phone is in Louisville now and you live in the US you will get your phone tomorrow. Your house is probably 10 hours or less from Louisville by plane and truck and that's at the most. UPS works 24 hours a day.

Apple pays UPS a lot of money. They wouldn't dare be overwhelmed.
They have delivered iPhones on Saturday the past few releases. For the 6 release, I wasn't here to sign and they re-delivered on Saturday. Last year, they miss-sorted my iPhone 6s which delayed it and they delivered it on Saturday instead.
I've had them come as late as 9:30 pm for me on iPhone day... if it's on the truck, they are supposed to get it there. I once had an apple computer where they lied and said they tried to deliver it but didn't actually even come to my house. Was ticked about that.
Seems like some are delayed and some aren't. Mine still says "on time". I was trying to figure out if the people who got theirs delayed possible put in a change request that may have their phone delayed until Monday. I need answers asap lol.
They aren't. Don't know where that's coming from. I ordered FINALLY, at 3:29 and am getting my phone tomorrow.
Not to say it couldn't happen, but if the Apple Watch of last year was an example it still went to Louisville then flew on to Ontario. I had that one delivered to office, so it stayed around here. It still made it for delivery that same launch day though.
Mine was the Taiwan/Osaka mishap and I haven't received any notification or changed my delivery options. I am in Ohio. I must say the last time I was guaranteed a delivery date (on the same day it was delayed) I received a free phone case. Weather or not, they should've known by now to confirm a delivery date while having knowledge of this delay.
If you're in KY right now you're getting it tomorrow. I've had mine leave after midnight on launch day from KY and still make it.
I am part of the Osaka crew, and I am midwest. Scheduled delivery is still for 9/16

My phone also departed Osaka, Japan on 9/15 10:05PM and is scheduled for delivery on 9/16. Which flight is that? I'm like totally lost in tracking already. I thought it was UPS61 but that's a flight from Taiwan to Anchourage, not Japan.
