They would be doing something special with the EIP anyway as it is 24 month, which an EIP is usually not. So it makes sense that if you pay it down, it'll still get split over 24 months. Besides that, you can find what I said on the official T-Mo documentation so we know they have a system in place for sure.

Look above. spells it all out.

The documentation only states
If you trade in your old iPhone at a T-Mobile retail location, you can use the value of the trade-in to buy down the EIP balance instead of getting the one-time bill credit.

But doesn't actually state how the EIP balance is reduced, all at once or every month. You could argue the semantics of the sentence with "one-time bill credit" imply the EIP buy-down is not "one-time", but it's not explicit.

Regardless, splitting the reduction over 24 months is more convenient because you pay $0/mo instead of $8.17 or whatever. But it's still worse that a bill credit if you plan on upgrading in again 12 months assuming the same promo, because you'll have only gotten half the T-Mobile credits and half the trade-in, so you'll pay half the cost of the phone, or $325, to upgrade. If you get the trade-in all at once, you'll still have half the EIP balance to pay, but you'll have gotten $195 back from T-Mobile and paid them, in my case, $8.17*12 = $98.04. That means your total cost paid to upgrade is $325 (EIP remainder) + $8.17*12 (monthly payments already paid) - $195 (trade-in) = $228.04

Basically, by splitting the trade-in credit over 24 months, you have to keep the phone for the entire period to earn the entire trade-in credit. If you are going to keep the phone that whole time, taking $195 now and paying $8.17 every month for 24 months is the same as paying $0 every month.

The best option, IMHO, is to use the Costco option. That way you get the $195 in pre-paid card, and you can use it to pay the $8.17 each month as long as you want, but keep the rest if you upgrade early. (or apply the rest to the EIP when you upgrade)

I was just about to post and say that I did not have to wait 40 days when I bought my iPhone 6 outright a few years ago.

Can you explain the process to me? (Sorry, Canadian here so unfamiliar with unlocking in the US). Did you buy the phone from the Apple store and get it unlocked from T Mobile right away? How long did you have to wait between requesting an unlock code and it going through?

Sent an email complaining to John Legree (hope I spelled that correctly). I don't typically complain, despite the constant less than stellar functioning of T-Mobiles actual system; but my Friday was ridiculous enough to warrant the email.

Ordered two 7 Plus 128 Gold, shipping estimated end of Sept, early October, like many here. Was told that T-Mobile grossly over-estimated the shipping date, on the Plus models in particular, because Apple hadn't given them a sure number supplies wise. He said to expect the phones on 1-2 weeks earlier than the estimated date, if not next week.

He also credited my account $200, and I will be refunded two months of EIP for two Note 7s, more than wiping out the EIP of the 2 128gb 7 plus phones (JOD). Despite their short comings, T-Mobile does treat its customers well enough.

Like I said, I rarely complain, even if the situation warrants it, so I believe that is part of why I got the credits.

Here is to hoping neither of the Note 7s in my house explode!
So you think they could be here by Friday potentially?

It was my first purchase from T-Mobile right around now two years ago. I purchased it outright from their website was told that it was going to take two weeks to arrive but it arrived in two days. Later that year, I was going abroad for a few weeks and just in case T-Mobile's coverage was lacking while I was abroad, I asked for them to unlock it approximately three weeks after I received it.

They transferred me to someone who specifically did unlocks at the company and then asked me a series of security questions (what car did you have financed by x bank in 2012 type things) and once that was done said to restore my phone through a computer. I got a notification that it was unlocked through iTunes to confirm.

It would be logical for them to apply it to the EIP, making it $465. That $465 gets spread out over 24 months, since they are emphasizing 24 months heavily. I don't see how it would work any other way, keeping in mind the 24 months.

As for which option is best (lump sum or EIP buy-down), it does come down to what you wanna do in the next year or two, like you said. It wouldn't be wise to get the buy-down if you wanna upgrade next year. It also wouldn't be wise to get a lump sum if you wanna upgrade in 2 years. So looking to upgrade to the 7S or whatever the next iPhone is? Lump sum seems good. Wanna wait out the 24 months and don't wanna see an increase in your bill at all? Go for the EIP buy-down option.

This is what he's saying:
For the device trade-in credit you get, T-Mobile will issue you a lump sum bill credit ($165 or $266 or whatever the amount may be). Now, over the 24 months, you'll be paying this lump sum credit 'back'. This is how they're going to make the 'free' promotion work.

So let's say you trade in an iPhone 6 16GB, which has a trade-in value of $165, and you're getting a $650 iPhone 7 32GB. T-Mobile will give you a $165 lump sum bill credit on your account once the trade-in is reviewed and accepted. This leaves you with $485 left on the iPhone 7 ($650 minus $165). For this $485, T-Mobile will issue you monthly bill credits (approximately $20.21). Since the EIP is $27.09/mo, that leaves you with $6.88 to pay every month. Where do you get this $6.88 from? Back to that credit T-Mobile gave you for your trade-in... $165. They gave it to you as a whole and now you need to give it back month-by-month. This makes the iPhone 7 completely free besides taxes. Hope that makes sense.

I'm not saying this is true btw, this is just what he is trying to say. I personally think T-Mobile will spread out the full $650 bill credits over 24 months, so we won't pay anything.

I confirmed it twice with two different TMO reps. This is exactly how it works. Effectively, everyone who traded in a 6, 6+, 6s or 6s+ will get $650 in credits-some paid up front when the trade in is evaluated, and the rest over 24 months.

Wouldn't that be great?

It's possible, and aligns with what I have experienced the last few years with T-Mobile. But, taken with a grain of salt, I expect the my phones to arrive next week or the following.

Who knows, I could be wrong.

If I don't I am going to send John Legree (hope I spelled that correctly) an evil ENTITLED message JK...

Well, T-Mobile executive office called. They gave me the good ol' sit and spin. The woman said the same thing the previous supervisor said. She could expedite the orders, but she could not guarantee we would even be in the first batch of phones, and the way she made it sound, the chances weren't good. She did pay our bill for the month, but it doesn't do anything to solve the issue at hand. I decided to decline her offer, I am hoping the managers at my local stores come though for me like they said they would. Im not worried about them not helping me, just worried they won't get what we tried to preorder. I have decided if I can't get a plus Friday but can get a regular 7, I am going to get a regular one, as I am not crazy about the plus anyway, and I am currently reconsidering how much the dual camera will be worth to me in exchange for a phone I had once and thought was way to big.
[doublepost=1473643161][/doublepost]Oh, and I got my girlfriend a 32GB gold regular 7 and it already has a shipping label and will be here Friday. She could care less! I only got her it because its free, she has no issue with her 6. (Hers isn't JOD like ours were, which is why I had no issue getting her phone.)

I downgraded last year from 6+, but decided I liked the bigger screen more. Just a little bigger

You serious dude? They offered you a free month and you said no?
Like its the end of the world if you don't get it on day one.
How ridiculous some acting like big babies every single release date...

I know I will probably be in the fetal position crying myself to sleep next Friday, because I don't have it in my hand to hold LOL.
