This also happened to my JB 7 in the last few days. Had the phone 3-4 weeks. No case but always super careful and kept in my pockets on its own with no keys/coins etc. Phone hasn't been dropped and doesn't have a single mark/scratch on it.

It's as if it's chipped or peeled/flaked away? Took it to Apple Genius Bar last night and they refused to accept it was a manufacturing fault and kicked me out the door.

Really disappointed with this.

If anyone else has experienced or heard of this would be interested in seeing what response you got from Apple. Doing a quick search myself this certainly isn't the first JB to do this and always seems to be around the speaker grill.

You already posted the same thing here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/iphone-7-flaking.2015528/page-2#post-23995171

Why start another separate thread?

the jet black 7 above is a different issue. that looks like it got scraped on something. mine doesn't even touch anything ever it just oxidized by itself i guess.

I replied to your similar post in another thread, but I'll say it again here. Properly performed anodizing will simply not peel, chip or flake. If it does, it is a manufacturing defect and should be replaced by Apple.

Thanks for the support! ATM Apple don't appear to agree. Still waiting for some sort of response from them.

So just had a call back from Apple Care and they're offering me a replacement iPhone 7 JB. Looks like they have decide it is an issue after all?!

Am obviously pleased to be getting the replacement but still a tad annoyed my iPhone did this in the first place.

Let's hope iPhone 7 JB v.2 has a better finish!

Excellent result, but also the only proper one. No points to Apple for this - and I am not one of those persistent Apple whiner/haters. They were wrong - glad they fixed it.

Make sure they give you a new phone and not a refurbished one. I've changed my iP7 a few times for different problems and I always take my box back with the phone and have them replaced it with a new sealed unit because I sell my phones and I like to have everything right like imie numbers matching on both phone and box.

you can do that?!

Yes but as someone who has sold over dozens of iPhones since 2007, the resale on a year old phone with matching imei is not as much compared to getting a replacement in the plastic and selling it as new in plastic. Even though the numbers don't match the box.

I was presuming that he wouldn't be selling the phone until next year when the iP8 comes out if even then so it wouldn't be a newly got refurbished phone.

Every time i've had a phone replaced with applecare plus, they gave me a white box phone. I've even asked for brand new and they say no every time

You have to do it as a return, not a warranty replacement, to get a new phone. Although at this point I'd be surprised if Apple had any refurb iPhone 7 units - the phone hasn't been out long enough, probably.

Actually no you don't, I have always got a new phone, sealed in box. All you have to do is remind them of your rights as a customer.

All my replacements have been in the first couple of months of release.

I believe that AppleCare it is different.

I have never had AppleCare because I don't need it as I have cover for unlimited phones included in my bank account. Plus they will get me a new phone either that day or before 9pm next day and it's free so no reason to have it in my case.

That would be why, then. As I mentioned earlier, they don't have refurbs during the first few months after release. If you do a warranty replacement later in the product life cycle, you're going to get a refurb in a generic box.

No they had refurbished phones and wanted to give me one but I refused as soon as I seen them coming out with the phone.

They even tried to tell me that the phone wasn't a refurbished phone and that they were new. I politely told them that I wouldn't be leaving without a new sealed unit as the phone I was returning was not fit for purpose.

So I made a thread a few weeks ago but for some reason, it got merged with another thread? (I'm not really sure if I can un-merge to make it easier for people to follow along but this entire situation but I just wanted to update y'all about everything. Apple did not fix my iPhone but they did, in fact, acknowledge that the finish was starting to flake off and tried to blame the case I had on my phone. They called it a "cosmetic imperfection" and mailed it back. So, I ended up going back to Verizon and getting another one for free I was hesitant about getting it because they said it would be refurbished but they guaranteed me that if I got three bad refurbished phones in a row, they would send me a brand new iPhone for free. Also! I did not have to pay anything for it, Verizon gives you a 1-year warranty when you purchase the phone for no additional cost. This iPhone (which is matte black just like the on that was flaking) hasn't given me any troubles and I made sure to buy a case from Apple just in case this happened again. That way a customer rep. wouldn't be able to give me the same excuse if this happens again. Sorry for the long story but hopefully this helps somewhat out to some extent!

I'm glad to hear Verizon would do something when Apple wouldn't help you!

Have you tried one of those special washes?
All the iPhones mateblack with this problem and apple still says it's a cosmetic issue
