Think the 28 is used to map the scene for the blur effect while the 56 focuses on the subject

This thread has only shown me that the photographer makes the photo not the camera. Some of these shots look like truly amazing gallery worthy shots and others look like cell phone camera shots...unfortunately most of my pictures probably fall in the cellphone camera shots category.

Nothing special, was just testing out the camera in low light last night in a bar. Really impressed with the low light performance.

This wasn't shot with portrait mode.

I think this portrait mode (and maybe the other modes) are over sharpening images along with trying to apply too much noise reduction.

Yep, telephoto lenses in general are not well suited to low light photography, so Apple just doesn't use it when the camera software determines that the quality would be worse than just digital zooming with the wide angle lens. Even the $350 telephoto lens I have for my Sony mirrorless camera stinks in low light compared to the kit and wide angle lenses.

As a general rule of thumb, you should really only use the 2x zoom when you are outdoors and the sun is out or you are indoors under bright lighting. If you are outdoors and the sun has already set or you are indoors in medium lighting or less, just stick to the wide angle lens.

actually focal length doesnt matter. its aperture (f stop) that matters for low light.
