Here it is as clear as I could. It is someone that looks to be sitting with one arm around the front of them and the other resting on their head with their wrist facing their face.
This is what I see....

I bet that this was digital zoom since based on my tests the optical zoom lens only works in extremely bright conditions. Still great lowlight picture.
Optical zoom. I never use digital zoom. I was in the front row.
It was optical.
That's interesting it was optical in such low light. It must have just been bright enough for the telephoto lens to work.
Apologies if you already knew this...but the reason stevejobs2.0 thought it might not be the telephoto lens, is that in low light conditions, the 7+ is not using the telephoto, even when you hit the "2x" button. Apple probably does this, due to the tele's aperture.

Looking back at that concert pic; it is easy to see it's not digital zoom, simply due to the crispness. It's a great pic.
It'd be cool if Apple had a tag at the top of the screen, indicating what lens is being used. Like a little "1.8" or "2.8" in corner
Cheers
Exactly. I haven't been able to "trick" the phone into using the optical 2x zoom in any indoor shots even with a ton of lights turned on.

Yeah, your not gonna trick the stock camera app to quickly, if ever at all. But you can always use a different camera app to allow for a manual use of the camera anytime you want.
Edit: words
I was thinking about this. Any third party app that lets you pick which lens is being used?

ProCam and ProCamera for sure. I own those two.
ProCam 4? Thanks.

I noticed in the details on that concert pic...it said Instagram. Does that mean it was taken through the Instagram app? Does Instagram have its own camera interface/app?
Just curious if that's why it was optical instead of digital in that setting. Like you said...maybe a non stock camera app would allow it to use the telephoto lens in low light. Forgive me, I don't use Instagram...so I'm not sure if it uses the stock camera app or not
It was taken in the stock app, I must have picked the Instagram version of the photo when uploading. It was uploaded to Instagram unedited and not edited in Instagram as well if that helps.I noticed in the details on that concert pic...it said Instagram. Taken in stock camera app, uploaded the Instagram version here which was also unedited. The concert lighting obviously helped a lot as well as my front row spot. But it was very easy to take this shot, just a few taps to set focus and exposure and it was done.So Hogg I looked into this. Instagram does indeed have its own camera app built into it but I do not think that this picture was taken via Instagram. First off it is not square. Secondly, Instagram does not store EXIF information in there app pictures. And lastly he said he took it from his camera roll. So I am thinking it is something with Exif and how they are reading these new pictures that are coming from the iPhones and are thinking it was Instagram and it was not.
Just wanted to add this could have been the stock app that took the picture. He was on the front row and all of those lights could have been good enough for the sensor to allow the telephoto lens to work.
I didn't know that. Ok, makes sense now with all the questions. Learning more about this phone every day. That's interesting it was optical in such low light. It must have just been bright enough for the telephoto lens to work.

^Has Apple solve the problem with the hair in the portrait mode in the second beta of iOS 10 ?

This mode is super impressive. Especially considering that its software, low-light, and the subject is a similar color to the background. Just awesome.Indoor portrait mode. View attachment 662967
How'd you get the details/picture information to show like that?
