If the light is not bright enough the iPhone will use the 1x wider lens as it lets much more light. As long the the light is bright enough, such as indoors with bright lights or outdoors in the daytime then the 2nd 2x camera will work fine.

If you were to take the same photo with the 2x camera in that lighting that photo would have been almost pitch black.

Apple really needs to put a warning on screen in dim lighting when the 2x option is selected saying something like this is 2x digital due to low light.

Can you provide a link to an Apple tech article proving your claim here. I can't find one. So I doubt what you're saying is accurate. In these kinds of issues I just need proof. In this case, proof that in low light the camera switches to x2 digital on the 1x lens rather than using the actual 2x lens.

Not from Apple but Serenity Caldwell from iMore wrote an article about the issue.

I'm assuming you have a 7 plus. If so download Metapho. It will allow you to see which lense was used in the image metadata. If the aperture is 1.8 mm then digital zoom was used and if the aperture is 2.8 mm then the telephoto lens was used.

The article explains it in more detail.

also, it even says which lens, under Lens - 3.99mm (28mm equivalent) and 6.6 (57mm equivalent).

Are any 3rd party apps able to take advantage of portraite mode?

Is the software about to create a DNG file after applying the blur or will this be limited to JPEGs?

Just put your finger over the telephoto lens indoors and try to zoom. The viewfinder will still show an image and not the back of your finger. I have a 7+ and can confirm that this is true. No optical zoom when there isn't enough light.

GET THE PROCAM APP! Now!
Seriously, if you guys want full control over the wide angle and telephoto lenses/cameras on the iPhone 7 plus, then you get this app. These screen shots show ISO, shutter speed, the camera being used, etc. the camera selected is highlighted in yellow at the top right corner of the app.

Any way to get swipe left to open Procam instead of the normal camera app?
