Hi guys,

Just thought I'd create a thread for new owners of the iPhone 8 / 8 Plus to share their first impressions of their new iPhones. Would be interesting to read some of your first impressions on things such as the design, display, camera, performance, fast charging and everything else.

I'm thinking a lot of users upgrading from the iPhone 7 / 7 Plus would be somewhat underwhelmed? I'll be switching over to the Note 8 soon after 8 years of iPhone and being disappointed with the the iPhone 8 and X updates, but it's always good to read some real first impressions from everyday users rather than those from the usual review sites and Youtube reviews.

Edit: Would be great if you can mention what phone you had previously, just to get some context.

Silver 8+ 64GB. I am impressed. I am happy with it. Camera is for sure improved. Speakers are clearer and louder. Glass back is a welcome change back from the iPhone 4. TrueTone works great. It is more of a 7S, but I still think it was worth it for those not interested in the X.

Walked into AT&T when they opened (I was the only one there) and grabbed one. They did not have ANY 256GB 8+ (backordered), but oh well.

Typing from my iPhone 8+ 256gb unlocked space gray version, I upgraded from original 6+. Very fast. I did some comparisons on wifi with both phones and this one smokes it so very happy. Truetone is very nice and 4k video at 60fps is life changing. Slomo and touch ID is greatly improved from 6+ versions. Love the look and with otterbox clear case it looks very glossy and sharp. If you get iphone 8, space gray is the color to get. Ill wait for iPhone X2 or X4 if I wait another three years;)

Got mine this morning, 8th person in line, out by 8:20.

Build quality is excellent.

Screen has the nicest, most even backlighting of any iPhone I've ever had. No backlight bleed at all, and no gradient on an all white page. However - it is actually a tad warmer than my SE screen (night shift, tru-tone, auto brightness all turned off). I was kind of surprised because my SE was much warmer than my old 6 which was pretty cold, so I was surprised to see that my 8 is a tad warmer than my SE (warm, but not tinted yellow/nasty).

I guess I will be the exception so far. I got my 8 Plus this am and I am moving from a 7 Plus. Honestly I am already struggling to find a good reason to keep it. The differences are so slight. I am going to use it over the weekend to see if I can justify the move. I really WANT TO LOVE IT but right now I just am not impressed. I am hoping for some hidden tidbits to entice me to keep...

Wasnt this a foregone conclusion before purchase?

Got my 8+ 256 Space Gray this morning. Moved from a regular 7. Reason? Missed the bigger screen (I had a 6+ before). My thumbs appreciate the bigger keyboard! I really appreciate the glass back, as the 7 and 6 was just WAY too slippery which made it impossible to use them without a case. I can comfortably use the 8+ without a case!

I'm kinda disappointed that the Space Gray on the iPhone 8 doesn't match the same color / hue as the Space Gray on the MacBook Pro 2017. The Space Gray on the iPhone is significantly darker. Almost black. There is basically no similarity between the Space Gray on the MacBook Pro and the Space Gray on the iPhone.

So far so good, except, I can't for the life of me figure out how I can do a cold-reboot on the 8+ ... If anyone knows, please tell me! The regular hold power button + volume down button doesn't work any more. It just presents Emergency SOS regardless! I've tried countless combinations and even looked at Apple's website without being able to figure out how I can do a cold reboot of the 8+.

Anyone??

Settings > General > Shut Down

That only performs a regular power-off... I'm talking about the COLD reboot (reset) that was performed by holding the power button + volume down button on the iPhone 7 for 10 seconds, which resets the phone in the same way as holding the power-button on a computer for 4+ seconds resets the computer.

Picked mine up this morning. 8 Plus, 64GB in Space Grey.

Love the glass back and the overall design. To me it feels much more premium than the 7 and is reminiscent of the iPhone 4s. I only switched for the design (had a 7 Plus which was my first white-front iPhone and will be the last) so not disappointed.

Two things...

I might be missing something really obvious but I can’t find 4K @ 60fps. Camera is set to 30fps and if I go into the settings menu, the options under video recording show only 4K at 24fps or 30fps. Anybody know where this is?
EDIT - found it. you have to turn on “high efficiency” in the format tab for it to work.

Portrait lighting has a long way to go. After playing with it for a while, out of about 30 attempted shots, only one of them didn’t look like some naff photoshop job - and even that one didn’t exactly look impressive. Thankfully I didn’t buy it for this feature as I wouldn’t have been impressed at all if I had.

Played with the 8+ in store this morning before work and decided to reserve one for pick up later today, despite canceling prior pre-orders. It isn't that much heavier than the 7+ I played with, I certainly don't have a problem with it. Love the glass back, the SG color looks so great. Can't wait to pick it up.

There are actually people out there who want the 8+. Coming from a regular 7 with a Mophie battery case, the 8+ is less than 1/4 inch taller and a much better overall experience. I will enjoy my new phone until spring 2018 when the X is readily available and decide at that time whether I want it. Further, I'd place money on the likelihood of the 2nd generation X bringing back Touch ID. Rendering all of these 1st Gen X phones utterly valueless.

Listen to Gruber, The engineers abandoned Touch ID in favor of Face ID because they saw it as better. its not coming back. Don't you know Apple. Face ID is the way to go. By saying the touch ID is less secure it would be a Strike for them to bring back a LESS secure feature. Its over.

My 8+ and AW3 LTE arrived today and all is working fine. The AW3 is much faster to me, just rebooting is fast now.

Phone came with 93% battery and the AW3 came with 96% so they were fresh to say the least!

I will believe that when Apple gets the X out there and running. All I hear now is production problems which means they are not turning them out in near the meager numbers they thought! Apples stock has already lost a good bit because of the AW problem, the cr^p will hit the fan if there are problems with the X after it is introduced.

Ehh, we'll see. Don't want to get in a debate on this thread, I'm all in with the 8+ and was very impressed with it this morning. It is surprisingly very pocket-friendly. I wore a freshly washed pair of jeans that hadn't been fully dried before and was extra crispy, just to test this, lol. I was walking like Kramer in that Seinfeld episode when he tried on skinny jeans. But the Plus slid right in and didn't interfere with my mobility :D

Gruber has been wrong before... I think if Apple can figure how to make it work with the OLED display they will in fact bring it back. Why because the competition is going to force them too with Samsung and others not only offering Face ID, Iris Scanning and Touch... Apple just having Face ID will keep them behind the curve. It is also going to depend on how well it works and the feedback they get in the next several months too. It seems pretty clear they wanted to include Touch ID, but just couldn't make it work.

I just held the off button for number of seconds, then I swiped “slide to power off” pop up. Is that what you want ? Then when you power on again you wait for the Apple logo then enter your ID code number

Apple will be telling touch ID iOS devices (phones, tablets) for three or four more years at least. But I agree that it will likely not come back to the "X" series. The question is does Apple make an "8s" or "9" with TouchID.

How was the activation with the AW3?

I need some help too on this. I tried all the combinations but nothing so far.
