A bloke who reviews the iphones uses a galaxy s8 and that uses gorilla glass 5 and his does not scratch.
His new iphone with the best toughest glass around has loads of scratches.

Until Apple comes out to say this, I call bull. Sorry. Random guy on internet looking for support for his self-inflicted phone issue with no sources for Apple confirmation...

You new phone will scratch just as easy. I also call BS on Apple saying some are soft! LOL!

Apple is always months/years behind admitting any kind of issue with their products.

With all due respect, people all too often assume Apple is perfect, and never makes mistakes during production of their products. Further, in case you didn't read the thread, you will see I'm not the only one reporting this issue, and the device hasn't even been out for a month.

OP, you shouldn't have expected the phone not to get scratches. It is not Apple's fault you walked around with your phone unprotected. I think it is wrong to ask Apple to replace it, or even your carrier. Live with it and protect your phone.

Well, the phone didn’t scratch by itself. So we really don’t know what happened. Anybody can post on this forum and say it’s Apple’s fault, and I didn’t do anything out of the normal. With my iPhone 8+, not one scratch. Of course I have to admit I was smart enough to put a screen protector before leaving the Verizon store. ;)

The 7 plus screeen is ****. Myne is covered in scratches i never use screen protectors. The iphone 6 that i had before that i had for two years used in the same way i do had not a single scratch on it.

My 7+ screen is practically new. I don't use screen protectors or a case and I have no issues with it scratching. So clearly it's variable and it doesn't mean that iPhone 7 display is any worse than you're making it sound compared to how somebody else treats theirs.

Apple is far from perfect and I will be the first to admit that. Hated and returned MacBook Pro over and over. Drove me to a NON-Apple laptop.

You can scratch your screen the first day so . . . .

So if anything the newer screen are harder than the older ones and should be more resistant to scratches. If you want to check an unbiased (or if anything biased against Apple) 3rd party check out jerryrigeverything's videos on YouTube as he has a set of hardness scale picks that he uses. Just about every modern phone, including the 8, scratches between the 5 and 6 scale.

If anyone's phone is scratching more for some reason it is an external issue. Remember that although metal things like keys won't scratch the screen dust and sand certainly will. Also remember that synthetic diamond dust is used in lots of industrial applications so it's very possible to come in contact with particles. I had a watch years ago with a sapphire face that had a huge scratch on the front somehow after working a cashiering shift at PetSmart.

So basically: the glass is not softer than normal, you just happened to encounter some kind of particle that was harder than the glass without knowing it.

I do not care what anybody says or cares to argue. The fact is even the strongest gorilla glass produced will scratch. Hard, Soft, Coated or not. Given the correct environment & minerals it will scratch.
Not trying to sound like a knowitall, it is simply a fact.

Who's to say? I think we give too much credit to how perfect Apple's assembly process is.

Did you not see the threads regarding that issue?

I am seeing scratched up products right out of the box from apple. My iPhone 8 plus had a deep scratch on the screen in a matter of an hour. I am pretty sure it is right out of the box. I have not even put in the pocket. I also had 2017 12.9 iPad pro that had a scratch that is right beside the cellular chip door that is diameter 3mm right out of the box.

I was biting until you said "I am pretty sure"

If you find defects right out of the box, return it!

First you said you’re seeing scratches right out of the box.
Then you say you saw a deep scratch on the screen in a matter of an hour.
You go on to say that you’re pretty sure it’s right out of the box.

Which one is it. You now made it confusing

Having read this thread, at least Apple was kind enough to replace a scratched up phone regardless of fault...and made you feel better for it.They could of just said its wear and tear from normal use and refused to replace it. That's some top notch service...aaah every time I say "top notch" I see an iphone x in my head o_O

Lesson learnt, buy a case/screen protector and have it ready to go from when you open the box.
That's what I'll be doing for the impending X anyway...

It was very nice of them to do that, you're right.

I had another horrible experience yesterday. My IPhone 8+ ACTUALLY stopped working with my network. I'm not sure if the antenna stopped working or what, because it took FOREVER to load anything when using Verizon, but was fine over wifi. I then restored the phone and set up as new, but I was encountering the same issue.

I brought it to the Apple Store and the guy who was helping me said that there was nothing wrong with the phone. They ran all tests and it came back all good. I tried telling him that I even put the SIM card back in my SE and it was running 10x faster and had no dropped calls, but he said it was because of the update and was normal because all be other apps have to update to support the newer update (what?!)

I told him that Safari, phone, and messages were all built into IOS and the guy gave me a very arrogant, condescending attitude. He still said that there was nothing wrong with the phone (like really?).

I decided to just return the phone today and use my SE until the X comes out because I should just spend my money on that.

When I was returning the phone, my network wasn't working at all at that point and it was useless unless I used WIFI.

You would think that going back to my SE would seem very slow and unresponsive, yet it's A LOT more quick than my 8+. No lag, very responsive, and also had more crap on it (8gb out of 64gb are available)

Welcome to the iphone X que then... Good luck to all of us on pre order day.
Oh and don't forget to order your iphone X case and screen protector before your X arrives...because If you start another thread like this one, well you know what....lol ;)

I just got a 8 Plus today, I've noticed a very small scratch on the display. I'm going to live with it because besides the tiny scratch on the screen the phone is flawless. I also put a glass screen protector on the phone, so I can't even notice the scratch anymore. My 8 Plus was made week 40 at factory f17.

It came out of the box like that too?

Replacement phone today had scratches new out of box. Basically they are small in the glass but once you see you cannot unsee.

Like many, I think users aren’t seeing them till later because most people don’t go looking for this on a new phone. I never expected this until I saw it last year on the 7 plus and series 2 watches.

That's true. Many likely don't notice the scratches because they're not intentionally looking for them. But if somebody was really inspecting the device, they likely would notice the finer micro scratches.

Glad that I'm not the only one with that scratch problem. My iPhone 8 Plus also has scratches all over the front screen although i'm always keeping it in a microfiber cover. It has light scratches all around the edges and 2 mayor ones on the screen itself.

And what I find interessting is, that there isn't the slightest scratch on the backside, not one. But the front is covered with them. No idea where they come from. Haven't dropped my phone and always keeping it in the cover.

My 8 plus has two scratches on the screen. Not one scratch on my 6 plus which I had for 3 years, caseless.

When you spend all this money on a phone you need to protect it anyway you can. The second I took my 8+ out of the plastic I put a case and tempered glass screen protector on it. No worries.
Oh really? I've owned maybe 20 phones in my life. Not one had a screen protector on it. And, never will. I always use a case, though.

Everyone's different. I've broken 3 iPhone screens (all my 6+), dozens of drops (maybe over 100 by now). I've decided on any phone moving forward a case and glass screen protector are required. For others who are very conscious about their phone and take very good care of it, those things won't be needed.

Just to add my anecdotal experience to this thread, I always notice hairline scratches after a few weeks of use. Given how often we use our phone and the debris that's flying around, it's really not surprising at all.
