Now officially announced that at-home activiation is possible via the latest release of iTunes.

Notes from video :

Activation
* Before using it, you must select a service plan and register it with AT&T.
* You can activate at your own pace, own computer in place of your choosing.
* No need to wait in the store
* Activation works the same on MAC & PC
* iTunes launches on automatically on iPhone connection
* You may transfer online.
* Select calling rates via iTunes
* Current AT&T customers only need to add data plan
* Must be over 18 to activate phone
* Must have or create Apple ID
* Credit check online is possible (?)
* Wait for AT&T to check (few minutes)
* Activation done

Syncing
* Works the same way as iPod syncing
* Capacity is 7.27GB w/ OS
* Multiple e-mail accounts sync-able
* If you recieve a call during syncing, syncing will stop to let you answer the phone.

Additional Notes:
* Wedding Crashers (New Line) is seen in the sync movies portion. The video is currently unavailable in the iTunes Store. [Pic]
* Odd 74.40 GB error in "capacity" view. Even with error, capacity of iPhone remains 7.27 [Pic]

so it means you can buy it without any contract - but if you want to use it you must make a contract...

Or is it possible to use it only for Wifi and Ipod without contract - and only if you want to use it as phone you need a contract...

Please help a german iphone fan...
 
so, how many calls do you think "Johnny Appleseed"'s new iPhone is gonna get today. They show the number in the video. by the way, i'm guessing they made this video back on May 14th, since that's the date that came up when asking for his birthday.
 
this is gonna be bad news as far as dealing with ebayers goes. anyone can buy one and sell it. then the person they sell it to deals with the activation...:mad:
 
Well, it appears that Apple and AT&T are doing credit checks in the stores, and if you don't pass the check, you will probably have to pay the $750 when you purchase the iPhone. I would think most eBayers don't have good credit, so they might wait in line all day and end up getting screwed!

I've been thinking about this as well and....during the video there is mention of credit code approval from at&t, I wonder if there will be some way of linking at&t's system up with the IMEI to prevent scalping???

Eh, probably just wishful thinking on my part. :(
 
It's great for me, as I'd rather deal with it at home anyway. My only question is, what about people with pre-usb2.0 computer's? I know plenty of people with perfectly good ibook's that don't have usb 2.0 that apparently can't activate iphone?
 
What if I already have an Account and want to keep a number from T-Mobile?

What if I already have an account with AT&T - the wife uses the phone - my phone is at T-Mobile.

I want to move my t-Mobile number to AT&T, but I'm not a new customer. Should I go through the new customer set up? Doesn't seem like they give you the port option if you are an existing customer and just want to add a line.
 
Did anyone else notice in the activation demo showed 'Wedding Crashers' as an available movie to sync to the iPhone? This film is not (yet) available form the iTunes Store; nothing from New Line is...
 
Hello everyone. As you all im reading everything to give me clues on the details of buying an iphone an use it without a contract. Please read the following that says bellow the iphone plans at apple.com

"inimum new 2-year wireless service plan and activation fee required to activate iPhone features, including iPod; plans are subject to AT&T credit approval."

Does this mean that even if i buy it i wont be able to use it as an ipod?

That would be silly, considering you can buy an iPhone online (Apple Store) for MSRP and it ships within the sametime (or sooner) than most eBay items. You'd most likely pay a lot more for an eBay iPhone, too.:rolleyes:

True, but there are those idiots out there that automatically think eBay is the only hope for acquiring new gadgets like this.....

iPhone Activation and Syncing Video



Besides announcing rate plans today, Apple has also posted a video demonstrating how to activate and sync the iPhone.

The iPhone is activated through iTunes. Activation works for both existing and new AT&T customers, and allows users to transfer their existing phone number to the iPhone.

The syncing portion of the video demonstrates how to sync email accounts, address, safari bookmarks and more.
 
I hope everything workd out for Apple because they are doing everything so differently regarding the iPhone.

It is good to get the phone and go home and activate it. Worry about iTunes and Vista because it seems they are not working well together.
 
Looks like the video was captured with a resolution independent (or fake, I suppose) interface -- nice. Can't wait for that.
 
Funny thing is, in the Sync part of the video, they for sure weren't using an iPhone, unless the new capacity of an iPhone is gonna be 80 GB. They probably used a 80gig iPod... Silly mistake :rolleyes: :)
