Which means if your credit isn't great, you can still be the one at the store to buy the phone, take it home, and have your credit superior (spouse, parent, etc..) sign up for service in their name?

Absolutely. And if you are under 18 you can't do it anyway -- regardless of your credit history.

So if you are currently an ATT customer, say with a new phone and 2 year contract as of last week, and you want to get the iPhone do you face any sort of penalty? Do you simply pay the $500-600 for the phone, get locked in for another 2-years, and put the old phone in the closet?

If that is the case than why wouldn't people buy another phone just for the sake of receiving a $150 dollars off for signing up for a 2-year contract.

I don't know if I am explaining myself clearly. Say I plan on buying an iPhone. Why wouldn't I go into an ATT store tomorrow, buy a blackjack for the discounted $75 dollars with 2-year activation, wait until friday, get the iPhone, and add the $20 to my current blackjack plan...

This seems to make sense. Put that Blackjack on ebay for $150 and you've just subsidized your iphone.

Apple (and AT&T) have no legal obligation to unlock your phone in the United States (dunno about Canada). However, they have no legal recourse against people who independently figure out how to unlock the phone for themselves.
Absolutely. It is 100% legal to UNLOCK your cellphone in the U.S. Do what you want! It's yours, you paid for it!

I was thinking about the exact same thing!

Photos?

In the video they showed the bar at the bottom with the summary of the data on the iPhone. Normally on an iPod they show 'Photos' as a breakdown... Will this be available in the iPhone? I would like to know if my pictures are taking up too much space.

I just finished my 2 year agreement with AT&T, do you think they would require another deposit? I had one initially because of having no credit, but now my credit is good. But, would I even need one since I'm already with AT&T? Thanks

How much was your deposit with no credit. Just WOndering.

Switching at different times

If I have someone else in my family plan that is waiting to get their iPhone, do both of us need to have an iPhone to start a family plan or can I start it with just mine and add the 2nd line later?

"depending on your carrier"

did anyone else catch that bit in this video? mini-steve says something like "usually it can be done in less than 20 minutes but it could take several hours depending on your carrier"

is that a goof? or a hint? seriously, it has a big AT&T logo, but this seems to imply multiple carrier support.... perhaps this is just something to say ahead of time so they don't have to re-do this video when iphone gets released in EU ....

The video was referring to switching your phone number from another carrier to AT&T. It was not implying that the iPhone would support multiple carriers. Bringing existing phone numbers to a new carrier, in my experience, can take a few hours.

My first post and expierene!

Whats up all.....just wanted to share my expierence as far as getting pre-approved for the iphone and here goes....

Called an 800 and 888 number (one posted here) and both numbers will not do an credit check for iphone, they both say that it has to be done in store not over phone, cingular or apple store.

Went to Cingular store, after they completed traingin at 3pm EST, it is onw 3:51pm EST, and asked about same thing, they say I have to come in on Friday at 6pm to do credit check and some type of pre-approval to see about getting an iphone.

So I ask what I could do if I was to sign up for att service today and then come back to get iphone on friday, they say that should be able to be done, but if you sign up today, and come back friday, theres no gurantee you will qualify for the iphone because they will run your credit again on friday, and that may interfere with your qualification because of an credit check a couple days ago.

They told me its best for me to come on Friday to do it all, and also on Friday, NO iPHONES will be activated in store, Cingualr is to do the preapproval, and if approved, they sale the item, as well as at an apple store, and all activations and things of that nature is included in detatils within the box, that you do all at home. So dont expect your phone to be working right out the door!

So now it comes down to waiting in line for forever and a day to find out that I gotta pay $1300 just to get an iphone and ATT service...lol...why I have a feeling its going to be around that price, I dunno, just got that feeling.

But this was my expierence, cant wait till friday!

**EDIT** Also, I questioned about the family plan, as far as if it had to be two iphones or iphone and any other phone, for iphone plan, she said it doesnt matter, but if you want to iPhones, thats possible, they need two physical bodies their to get them, and there is a special pricing on the purchase of Two, wasnt sure if she was refering to Plan or Hardware, but my guess is plan.

For those of you who want to get pre-approved for the iPhone (or you're worried about your credit), take the following steps:

1. Call AT&T at 1-888-333-6651.
2. Choose option 3 for new service, and then 3 again.
3. Tell them you're interested in buying the iPhone and want to get pre-approved. They'll ask for your SSN, ID, address, etc. They'll run a credit check and let you know if you're approved or not.
4. Be sure to ask for a BAN number before you hang up. This BAN number is good for 30 days.
5. After buying your iPhone on Friday, enter the BAN number in the "pre-approved credit check code" field during activation.

See screen shot below:

Just one less thing to worry about. :)

I just got off the phone with them and they said you cannot do that. I asked if he was sure, and he said "I can assure you nobody has called and gotten pre-approved"

He was kind of a jerk about it to. I'm calling back and hopefully getting a different person.

Edit: Grr, called again. Got a different guy. He told me the same thing, but he was much nicer.

coming in here to also confirm that you can't do this over the phone...I hope the Apple Store is planning on issuing credit checks, because that's where I'm buying the phone. I don't feel like going to the Apple Store AND AT&T. I'm virtually assured of having to make some sort of deposit because I just turned 19 and have no credit to speak of.

Another confirmation that they are not doing credit checks over the phone. I guess I'll just go to the store tomorrow. I think even a $250 deposit is ludicrous and even though I can afford it, I won't pay it. If I am required to put down a deposit, I'll have to decide if I'd rather go with the GoPhone plan or just not get an iPhone.

Out of curiosity, do they base everything off of your credit score/history? I have no credit history that I know of, but I make a fair amount of money at a steady (salaried) job and would have no trouble paying for the iPhone and service. I've filled out another credit application where they asked you for your income and employer, although I don't really know what they use that information for. I've never needed a credit card or a loan (never been in debt even a few dollars in my life), so I've never gotten one. The only time I filled out a credit application before was for a loan that I didn't need, but wanted just to help build up my credit. I was approved for such a small loan that I just said screw it and bought the thing with cash.

Anyway, I'll be disappointed if I can't get an iPhone at a reasonable price because of all this credit check business.

Same Experience

I just called and got the same answer. Either they stopped doing it over the phone, or I got a couple of jerks (I called twice!)

So I'll just throw my SSN in iTunes come activation time - which should be late Friday night, just when all the servers will be hit!:p
