HA! Apple is taking ATT out of the loop completely. Its like an MVNO but keeping ATTs name.

Didn't Steve pull that RDF trick by buying Disney to help Pixar sell movies and get independent? yeah, i know it's been supposed to be the opposite, but it certainly looks that way...

BTW, June 29 is also the Rat-a-toui-lle movie opening... that's going to be a great day!

Is unocking possible? Someone will do it. I also believe that legally Apple has to offer unlocking - will the phone work with other networks?
Apple (and AT&T) have no legal obligation to unlock your phone in the United States (dunno about Canada). However, they have no legal recourse against people who independently figure out how to unlock the phone for themselves.

Well, it appears that Apple and AT&T are doing credit checks in the stores, and if you don't pass the check, you will probably have to pay the $750 when you purchase the iPhone. I would think most eBayers don't have good credit, so they might wait in line all day and end up getting screwed!

Really, according to who?

I noticed that you can import your address book from your yahoo account. I wonder why just yahoo and not google.

Changing plans?

Does anyone know if I will be able to switch between iPhone plans during the 2 year period? If I decide at some point that 900 minutes aren't enough, can I upgrade to the more expensive plan later on?

Yes, usually if you remain with AT&T you can switch plans throughout your 2 year agreement.

Well if you are referring to the credit checks, AT&T has a policy that does not turn down anyone for service. If your credit report comes up bad or if you have no credit, you will still be approved- but your deposit will be much more than that of someone with good credit.

A few example scenarios:

Both people start out by buying their own iPhone ($600)

Person 1 has good credit, pays $50 deposit
Person 2 has terrible credit, pays $750 deposit

There is no need to get pre-approved unless you will not have enough money to cover the deposit when you sign up. Nobody will be turned down or not able to get service for the iPhone. You just might end up paying a hefty deposit.

I just finished my 2 year agreement with AT&T, do you think they would require another deposit? I had one initially because of having no credit, but now my credit is good. But, would I even need one since I'm already with AT&T? Thanks

My question is, in the part of the activation where you can access local number portability and take your # with you - do I have to cancel Verizon first, or when I enter my phone # and billing address at the time, it 'steals' the number from Verizon, cancelling my contract with them by default? I would imagine I have to cancel first? Anyone know?

Well, I know that there will be a credit check during the setup/activation at home. But I was curious as to whether there will also be one at the store, seeing how stores are only selling the phone.

Do NOT cancel your Verizon service first, or you will lose your #!

When you transfer it to AT&T, Verizon automatically terminates your account (and bills you the appropriate fee, if applicable).

Still A Little Confused

So if you are currently an ATT customer, say with a new phone and 2 year contract as of last week, and you want to get the iPhone do you face any sort of penalty? Do you simply pay the $500-600 for the phone, get locked in for another 2-years, and put the old phone in the closet?

If that is the case than why wouldn't people buy another phone just for the sake of receiving a $150 dollars off for signing up for a 2-year contract.

I don't know if I am explaining myself clearly. Say I plan on buying an iPhone. Why wouldn't I go into an ATT store tomorrow, buy a blackjack for the discounted $75 dollars with 2-year activation, wait until friday, get the iPhone, and add the $20 to my current blackjack plan...

I think it's pretty cool that you can activate it over iTunes. But my question then becomes...where is this $36 going toward to activate the phone? The automation of iTunes will certainly be minimal cost...so why the high activation fee?

The one gripe I have about cell phones...the price never stops with just the monthly fee. Oh well.

What if I have an AT&T plan that is not up for renewal -- Can I simply replace one of my phones with an iPhone at no additional fee?

Or will I need to wait until my 2 years is up?

there's an early termination fee, but they usually let you upgrade after 18 months-ish

How will the Credit Check thing work for an 18 year old (without a credit card) who plans on picking an iPhone up in an AT&T store this Friday??

Thanks

Well, if you don't have a credit card (by this, I assume you mean you haven't built credit up), then your deposit will likely be higher. No credit is better than bad credit, but don't expect a cheap deposit your first time around.

I like how they used a high resolution version of iTunes. Looks neat and sharp. Hope it's one of Leopard's "final" features. I want my 160 ppi 24" iMac!

Thanks. Where exactly does the deposit go?

For those of you who want to get pre-approved for the iPhone (or you're worried about your credit), take the following steps:

1. Call AT&T at 1-888-333-6651.
2. Choose option 3 for new service, and then 3 again.
3. Tell them you're interested in buying the iPhone and want to get pre-approved. They'll ask for your SSN, ID, address, etc. They'll run a credit check and let you know if you're approved or not.
4. Be sure to ask for a BAN number before you hang up. This BAN number is good for 30 days.
5. After buying your iPhone on Friday, enter the BAN number in the "pre-approved credit check code" field during activation.

Just one less thing to worry about. :)

Thank you. I've been calling AT&T and Apple stores all day trying to get that answer.
