They should hook this into Garageband. Make your own ringtones, or edit songs to make ringtones.

I'm sure they will sell ringtones in iTunes for the iPhone. I've heard ringtones can go for lots of money. If iTunes charges $.99 for them, it could disrupt the whole ringtone industry.

In demonstrating how to change ringtones, the video only demonstrates how to move between the phone's built-in ringtones.

Unless I missed it, there's nothing to indicate the ability to set a song as a ringtone.

Has there been anything publicized about the iPhone to suggest that you can use your iPod music as a ringtone?

For me, it's not a huge deal, but a lot of people like to set music as their ringtone. It would be a shame if you bought a song from iTunes, then had to pay for it again as a ringtone.

The video made everything look so easy, but I noticed the time never changed on the iphone, so it could have easily been a video and not actual use.

Seems to be a simulation as the hand typing never changes the position of the fingers. They must have placed the hand image over a simulated iphone, its not the real deal.

So is the sim tray on top of the phone like the Treos? Cos i can't see any other logical location.

I just watched the guided tour and I loved it! I was really surprised when I saw you could preview Word documents and view traffic information within Google Maps. Even though the iPhone doesn't have true GPS, this is pretty close if you ask me.

I think my wife is finally on the bandwagon. After watching the guided tour with me she said "when you look at this vs buying a GPS, cell phone, iPod, and PDA, the iPhone is really a deal.":D

Well, technically, the iPhone won't help you out if you're lost in the middle of nowhere with no cell signal. That's a scenario where a dedicated GPS will get you out of there.

But still, the video was very very cool. I did notice that there was no apparent way to set your own ringtones besides the preinstalled ones. Or maybe it's just buried under another option...

Traffic on Google Maps is nothing new. Google's Java based Gmaps app already has it but it definitely isn't as easy to use :p

Ringtone for $.99? The same price as a regular song? That seems kind of pricey to me...

Either way though, I didn't see any UI in the Settings page to let you even choose a store bought Ringtone but I guess I'd have to play around with it myself to know for sure.

I took half day off on friday so I can check out the Apple Store at North Point Mall in Georgia. The sale will not start till 6pm but maybe we will get to see some real demos and actually touch a phone before that time. I hope the plan packages will be available by then.

i think you mean 12 and 4 but i agree.

- ok did you fix a typo (from "14 and 4") or did i just imagine it completely?

Whatever you quoted was what they had....quotes don't change, unless you edited the quote.

(Simple terms is you imagined it :) )

JOhn Lennon would be happy

i'm assume the most frustrating thing with the iPhone is going to be double tapping to enlarge a webpage... you also have to double tap a link, and i'm quite certain that when a user simply means to enlarge the page (like google search), it's going to accidentally goto a link instead, or vice-versa...

and that guy giving the guided tour is creepy... like pedophile-creepy... that's all...

Flux Capacitor in the iPhone

Did anyone else pick up on the flux capacitor built into the iPhone!?

Lol when you're watching the video during the Settings section, as he moves through the Settings the Usage goes from...

7h 6m... 7h 18m... 7h 38m...

Yet the phones time still remains at 9:42am during the whole presentation, and only 2 minutes passed by in real time during this part of the presentation!

Apple... Bending Space and Time...

GSM = Great Scott Marty!

It's a well-done tour video.

My observations:
He said "Favorites is a great way to speed dial someone with just one tap." Then he showed how you do it, with three taps! (You tap Favorites, then +, then Johnny Appleseed.)

Color blind people may have trouble with the red used to differentiate phone messages, and the red used to show traffic problems. No sign of color preferences in the Settings, but we didn't see all of the Settings.

Sometimes "zoom out" is 1 click; sometimes 2.

The spokesman said "we" so he's (pretending to be?) an Apple employee, not a third-party like a model or an ad agency worker.

The video ends by mentioning the date iPhones go on sale, so in its current form the "Tour" is only good for the next week.

$.99 for a ringtone is a steal....currently, cingular's ringtones are 2.49 each...they wouldn't charge less than that or it would ruin at&t's ringtone sales...........or maybe make more people buy iPhones

I'm impressed. A lot of extra small but handy features that i always wanted in a phone. That's attention to detail for you.

great. it was (then) only 2am, and im already imagining numbers. and this damn leprechaun wont shut up about wanting nachos...

pedo creepy? no. crazy yank pronunciations creepy? yes.

Readers for Word and Excel, at launchtime? THIS IS HUGE!!! Resisting is becoming...so..difficult. Wallet..getting...heavier.

As soon as my contract with Sprint is up, I'm buying one, hands down, no question. I don't currently have an iPod, so this will meet several needs of mine simultaneously. Even at $599, it's a steal. C'mon November!

That "End Call" button is right where my cheek would be....they didn't say if the touch screen is disabled when talking. Anyone know if this is how it will work?

Not disabled while talking--you can go on speakerphone and surf the web if you want--but it IS disabled while being held to your face (and the screen light also shuts off to save battery). This uses a proximity sensor and has been touted by Apple all year.

I am very impressed with the Maps app. You really don't need a GPS with all it can do imo.

Need, no. Want, yes! Complete with Google Earth's 3D terrain please :)

red can be a problem (im not C/Blind but having huge dealio about application usability for web apps @ work) but Orange/Green go almost exactly the same colour (yes the word has a U in it, get used to it! :p ) under one type of c/blindness.

under another, red green and orange ALL go a shade of pink. Yellow is one of the only colours that is largely unaffected. but yellow is crap for normal-sighted people except in small amounts.

Also, several people were wondering about the Airplane mode and whether the iPhone had one. Indeed it does! Whenever you turn on Airplane mode via the Settings menu, it disables all Wi-Fi signals and other cell phone signals submitted from the phone, and complies with the standards for usage on the plane.

A big joke among Nintendo fans is that the DS prints money. This will do the same for apple.

Just make sure she knows it won't actually perform the functions of a GPS, although the maps are great if you know where you are, which is almost always. I haven't seen the video yet, so wait, does the tour mention some sort of Google Maps App ability that I don't know about?
