Don’t defame me and the thousands of others who are doing this with no issue. You have this problem we do NOT!

If you prove to me via video that there is no latency right after pressing 'open in background' I will apologize. But so far it's just words.

So it’s working as designed but you don’t like it at this point? Think that’s perfectly fair.
It doesn't. As soon as you press 'open in background' and immediately (your finger should go at lightning speed) start scrolling to the current page (not the one open in background, of course) you will see that it scrolls after 0.5-1 s, not immediately.

Wait, I see it now! On my iPhone Xʀ on iOS 12, scrolling is disallowed after selecting “open new tab in background” for a split second, like you said.

Do you know what the interesting aspect about this is? That my iPad Air 5 on iPadOS 15 has no delay. At all. I’m scrolling as fast as I can and it’s completely smooth.

This leads me to believe that it’s an iOS-specific deliberate “feature” (there’s probably no better combo for sheer fluidity than an A12 Bionic and iOS 12).

OP, or others, can you please try that on an M1 or M2 iPad, please? Mine has absolutely zero delay, but I’m on iPadOS 15. Like I said, there’s a delay on my iPhone, and my iPhone Xʀ on iOS 12 is as fast as they get.

I never mentioned the iPad. I am referring to iPhone vs. Android. It is chock full of areas of the system where there is this darn lag. It is an incredible annoyance. On Android, on the other hand, everything is superfast and instantaneous.

No lag on an M2 iPad Pro. I have a 15 Pro Max and there is also no lag. I have tried but I’m not experiencing anything that I would have ever commented on.
I would’ve never noticed that, but look:

(Edit for clarity: iPhone Xʀ running iOS 12.3.1).

You're not doing it right if you don't notice it. It's an objective thing, blatant and present on any iPhone on the planet. Not just this specific case of Safari, unfortunately. It is everywhere.

I am happy that you finally confirm that I am telling the truth, unlike before.
My apologies. You are right. However, I am going to show you one more: this is how it should work on iPhones too, right?

Two clarifications:

-The time difference between the click and the scroll is how fast I can scroll from the moment the menu bar disappears. There is no input delay, unlike on the iPhones. This should be obvious from the video.

-Finally, the device is an iPad Air (5th Generation), running its original version, iPadOS 15.6.

It is everywhere.
Wrong, if it were everywhere, have you been everywhere? There would be millions of posts. Do not make blanket statements. Maybe it’s because I have the latest phone, but I’ve never noticed anything on previous phones. If you say it’s slower than Android, I don’t care. Those that do buy Android phones.

That looks good! It looks just like my iPad. I wonder why my iPhone can’t do it like that.
Because it doesn’t happen “everyhwere” as some people suggest. Perhaps on specific phones or specific users. Who knows? There will always be some features that behave differently for different people.

I edited my post: see how you have no animation going to the bottom right, whereas I do. That’s the reason.

My iPad doesn’t have that animation either, so it is smooth.

I still see no lag. I can scroll immediately after tapping open in background.

Nope. There is indeed. The scrolling did not go instantaneously. And this is despite the fact that you don't have, somehow, the animation that moves the tab to the bottom right like on any other iPhone. Despite this, there was still a lag of a few tenths of a second. Unfortunately, it happens in many other contexts as well. You only notice it if you are also using Android with Snapdragon 8 gen 2 in parallel. But the Tensor G3 is fine, too. If you have no yardstick, you might think everything is fine.

Oh the horrors!😱
Multiply that by 100 every day everywhere in the system and apps. On Android everything is instant and superfast. On iOS there are a flood of time wasters. This is an incontrovertible fact. And I'm sorry you don't want to admit it. If we want Apple to implement improvements, we don't have to have hams over our eyes.

The inputs being not as responsive has always been a thing with iPhones. iPhones feel smoother because of it but sometimes it's hard to whiz your way through stuff like Android lets you because it's not as animated. iOS 16 made it worse and introduced lags and stutters. The general experience of using a Samsung feels snappier compared to iPhone in my opinion, but it depends on what you value. iPhone has more eye candy and fluidity.

If you can afford to even consider switching as in you're not super locked into the ecosystem when it comes to software, I think it's always a good idea to not go with Apple, especially in Europe where nothing and nobody expects you to have an iPhone. There's a lot more attractive hardware over on the Android side, and it comes at a better value.

Try again. Evidently you've been slow with your finger. After tapping "open in a new tab in the background" on Safari, you instantly move your finger to scroll on the page while there is the animation of the link being catapulted to the bottom right. It won't let you do that for a second. I tried it on both iPhone 14 Pro and 15 Pro.

I tried both of the things you mentioned - 1. saving a screenshot and then immediately swiping up and 2. opening a link in Safari in a new tab and immediately trying to scroll the page I'm on.
Number 1 is immediate and very responsive, when I swipe up I am on the home screen immediately.
However, number 2 isn't responsive and I have the same result you do, I swipe furiously on the screen until the animation is done and only after a second (or more) it registers the input and I can actually scroll the page.

Hi, guys. Using iOS 17 and Android with One UI 5.1 or Pixel Experience in parallel, I have noticed that iPhone has become slower, less fluid and less reliable than Android. On Android, touches are registered instantly even when you move your finger at lightning speed, animations are super-fast (thus effective for productivity) and there is no lag. I'm talking of course about the top of the line (e.g., Galaxy S23 with second-generation Snapdragon 8). On iPhones, on the other hand, the situation is becoming disturbing. Animations are slow, touches don't often register (sometimes if the animation hasn't completely finished its run, the system won't let you give input), and there are lags sometimes. In addition, the absence of a "universal back" often forces you to go with your finger to the top of the screen with further loss of time, also because the little buttons (e.g., X) on iPhone are smaller and can fail more on the very first try. What is happening, has iPhone seriously lost one of its historical advantages? I am considering, for the first time in my life, abandoning iOS as my personal system. Nobody here in Europe uses iMessage or FaceTime anyway, so those two advantages (important in the U.S.) are lost. What do you guys think?
I don't fully agree with this. My dad has the s23U and the touches aren't always registered instantly. There was a weird bug where I couldn't click on the flash icon on his phone until I restarted it and it randomly comes back. Also, check out the s23U subreddit because there are plenty of complaints about animations and random scrolling lag. An awesome phone, don't get me wrong, but I think your claims are a little too generous on the android side and a little too harsh on the iOS side. This just my experience though.

Also "incontrovertible fact"?? Maybe you got lucky with your android where "everything is instant and superfast" but not in my case and not in many reddit users' cases (check out the subreddit again).

So it’s working as designed but you don’t like it at this point? Think that’s perfectly fair.

I think the OP's point is not that it isn't working as intended, but that the intended bit isn't good / fast enough, which I agree with.

Same here. After opening the link in the background, I can scroll immediately - iPad Pro 10.5", 2017, iPadOS 17.

This just my experience though.
Not just yours. There is no device that will completely satisfy every person on earth. That’s why there are so many different ones to choose from. Otherwise everyone would have the same phone. I’ve not had any experience with an Android device and have not seen any reason to do so, for myself. Others may have different needs.

So it’s iOS-only then. That’s odd. Seems like a design choice, Apple can clearly make it work “properly”.
