If it is 960x640 how dense will the pixels be side by side? Obviously 960x640 is to big to fit in our hands but Id like to know how close the pixels are to each other

The each pixel will have no space between itself and the next pixel.

all kidding aside, the current phone has 163 ppi this is double at a littl ebit bigger screen so about 300ppi? Basically like a printed sheet.

Engadget has the update that the new iPhone will be called the iPhone HD and is set to be announced June 22nd.

The writing of the update seems less speculative and more definitive then most 'rumors'. I think we all feel the same way, that this is in the bag...

I got my fingers crossed for the iPhone to get the same new OS look of the iPad and well as an HD Screen and an HD camera. 720p video recording? I think so

*UPDATE*

Engadget is now reporting Gruber's predictions that the iPhone HD will have a 960 x 640 resolution screen, the same processor as the iPad and will be running iPhone OS 4.0 with third party multi-tasking. Wow.

This is all well as I'm eligible for upgrade on my iPhone in May. But I feel it's still a little early to be thinking about the new iPhone. Lets get the iPad and new Mac Pros and Macbooks out first.

Maybe Apple is just going to implement resolution independence. Things won't look smaller compared to the current iPhones, but far, far sharper looking.

330 DPI. Yikes, that is gonna like laser printing rendered on screen.

Hope it is true. Especially if a Zune HD type dock allows for connecting the iPhone to HDTVs.

They seriously slap "HD" to anything these days to make everything sound upgraded. BigMac HD.

In Romania, I saw HD cigarettes :p

You guys are seriously excited by this? I have this small screen and now I'm going to get HD on it?? So, Apple is trying to catch up with the Zune now?

Other than that, there's the front-facing camera.

Someone explain why this will be a big deal (A+)? I don't get it. Since nothing was mentioned about the battery, I can't wait for the new battery threads.

SSDD for Apple.

Edit: Oh, and backgrounding will be nice, but you know it'll be nothing like what you have jailbroken. I'm thinking it'll be crippled in some way.

'HD' doesn't necessarily need to refer to HDTV resolutions. By handset standards I think 960x640 more than qualifies as high-definition.

True, the HD moniker doesnt just relate to TV. It could also be used on phones where HD means 960x640.

By the by I dont see the point in cramming that amount of pixelageTM in such a tiny screen. Its bordering on being pointless as we will probably not be able to see the full benefit.

Maybe 960x640 is ok but anything higher in such a small screen would be pointless.

HD ? Hmmm, interesting, there are already apps on the App store with the word HD following the title, and they are for the iPad.

Better resolution is awesome. With a faster processor, it'll take gaming and videos to a new level.

Does anyone "seriously" care about the quality of video on a phone screen?

I much rather iPhone implement a projector into the hardware with HD content!

There have been reports of improved battery life, and I'm sure that, among many other things will be included in the next iPhone. Plus, a new design, I'm sure. What's not to get excited about? :D

I do, mainly because my iPhone is my primary iPod as well. Why not have the images on-screen look as good as they possibly can?
Most can't tell the difference between 1080 and 720 on a 48inch screen. How many can notice the difference on a 3.5 inch screen between HD and non-HD?

Technology needs to be invested elsewhere, or it'll simply be a wasted add-on with added cost that most consumers won't find justifiable.

The point of adding resolution like this on such a small screen is not about being able to show higher resolution movies, it's about making everything crisper and easier to see and read. On the current iPhones, as text shrinks, it becomes impossible to read because the resolution of the screen is too low. The iPhone's screen is currently lagging behind the latest generations of Android devices, and it needs to catch up. On the Droid, for example, I can read much more of the NY Times home page without scrolling or zooming than is possible on my iPhone. If the resolution was this high, I'd be ecstatic.

so what exactly do you want? and why are you just assuming multitasking will be worse than jailbroken multitasking? Apple's CC&P was better than anything anyone else had done.

Not really. They've named 2 phones after the 3G network that they utilize. The 3G in the name has always referred to the network and ONLY the network.

I would not be shocked to see the 2010 phone be named 'iPhone 3G-HD.'

I'm not saying it will be, but it wouldn't be impossible.

no it would be iphone3gshd

check your At&t renewal status

Will I be eligible for an upgrade if I got my 3G phone in NOVEMBER 2008?

Thanks in advance.

I ordered my 3gs in June I am up for renew in Nov! which gives the a chance to Jb what ever comes out in June! rumors are great but I will believe it when Steve Jobs tells us!
