For the next iPhone Apple has to increase the screen res to complete with all the Android phones. One hurdle I see is won't all the current apps in the app store have to be rewritten then for the new screen res? We're talking 100k+ apps...

You contradicted yourself a few times... You say that this isn't just a small update but then you say that all the things that Apple is doing is not innovation. Front facing camera, done, UI, done, Multitasking, done, big screen, done...

So what is going to be so great about the next iPhone? Also maybe you should be thinking that if all these things have been done before then why didn't Apple do it?

Everything from the original iPhone had been done before when it came out. What made the iPhone great was that it had never been done all together and not done so well. That's exactly why people are excited about these other phones. Why shouldn't they be? So the step from iPhone 3Gs to EVO 4G isn't as big as Moto Razr to iPhone... big deal. EVO 4G still tops the known upcoming devices as far as functionality and specs go. That is not to say that Apple won't pull off something amazing, which I hope they do.

I said HTC isn't really innovating. And I didn't say ANYTHING about the future iPhone except that it is likely to be a big update. My whole post boils down to this: people need to stop acting like they know how Apple operates, people need to stop downplaying the iphone, if you're into android then that's awesome for you, I like it too, but the way people downplay the iphone is getting straight up ridiculous. Anyone who denies that...well you're probably one of them.

I agree. Between the late Macbook updates and no iPhone announcement as of April 2nd, it's pretty obvious Apple isn't following some set-in-stone schedule. Anybody who quotes the buyers guide deserves an eye-roller and I rarely use them.

And I also agree that it's foolish to count Apple out of this round because of their last two updates. As of now, Apple is showing their *** in comparison to the other smartphones on the market. I highly doubt they're going to let that continue after their next release.

The sad part is they are on macforums... saying how they can't wait for so and so.

Good for you? Head for open waters! You're so tired of your iphone... get rid of it and move on. Put your posts where your fingers are. ;) And for those that are waiting to say, "Already did," ponder why you're still here on MacRumors in the iPhone section.

'HD' doesn't necessarily need to refer to HDTV resolutions. By handset standards I think 960x640 more than qualifies as high-definition.

Seriously?

HD is a standard, it means High Definition and it is defined by a minimum of 720 lines for HD Ready and 1080 lines for Full HD. Of course, you already know this, you're not uninformed or daft.

However, to say that in "handset terms" 960 x 640 "more than qualifies as high definition" is just silly. The only way anything, regardless of whether it's on a handset or a 32" Samsung LED television, qualifies as HD is if it meets the technical requirements for the standard. No ifs, no buts, no maybes.

HD is HD, it has standards, and if those standards and specifications are not met then the device is not HD, end of story. Yes, 960 x 640 will look glorious on an iPhone sized device and the screen will be razor sharp, but razor sharp is still not HD.

Honestly, the things some people come away with.

Because HTC are able to pull of an aluminum unibody design with exchange battery, external memory card slot, GPS, Wi-Fi and 3G without any issues. Why can't Apple? iPhone OS is great (though a bit outdated), but the hardware is just sub par imo. It looks and feels cheap. It's a shame because the iPhone 2G was really great back then, but Apple forgot to step up to their game. HTC beat Apple at their core business (= combining great software with great hardware)! How on Earth could Apple let this happen?

I'm talking about the HTC Legend btw.

Hey, I understand that the aluminium back looks really nice (and I agree that the Legend is a damn sexy phone) but I have a read a few reviews and they actually found that because of this metal back they didn't get as good 3G coverage and WiFi coverage compared to the Desire. So I assume that was probably the reason why Apple moved away from it to a plastic back. I have not actually used the Legend but I am trusting what reviewers have said.

Could be, but I happen to own a Legend and I've been experiencing great 3G reception. I even get HSDPA reception indoors. Also, I've read a review of the SE X10 where it was determined that the Legend has better reception than the X10, with its plastic back. So ofcourse reception may vary from device to device, but it's not like the iPhone has been blessed with great reception either. I still think Apple should be able to pull off an aluminum iPhone with good reception.

Of course they aren't going to derail the iPad hype with an iPhone announcement right now.

Interesting that there is possibly going to be a CDMA iPhone since GSM is more prominent worldwide?

Marc

Makes perfect sense. Apple doesn't have to choose either GSM or CDMA. The hardware investment is trivial, they can choose both just like Motorola and RIM have done. They already have worldwide exposure with the GSM iPhone. OTOH, there are 100 million CDMA users in China, and 92 million (Verizon) here in the US. That latter group is starting to look pretty hard at the Droid, and there is already a GSM version of that phone. The marketplace for competent smart phones is getting crowded these days. Apple better get started on expanding their horizons (which is what they're doing).

I would guess they don't have to, the new phone should be design to be able to run app with old resolution, and it should automatically adjust to the native res size when launching an app.

Ray

Resolution is a hardware feature. The only possibility would be to use pixel doubling like with the iPad or run the app in a box. You can't change the resolution of the iPhone.

I guess there will be an update effort just as with the transition to iPhone OS 3.0 and many apps will be updated. The resolution of the iPad is not far from the rumored resolution of the new iPhone, so maybe the new iPhone apps will be derived from the iPad apps.

If he would have, then he would have been wrongly informed like you.

Right, because speculating if the next gen iPhone will be better than a different phone means it's not Mac related. You do realize this is MacRumors. Any rumors relating to the iPhone and it's potential sale is relevant. People come here looking for advice and information about the products Apple offers. The forum offers multi party discussion of these topics. This forum would be absolutely useless if every post was "OMG iPhone is awesome! Everyone buy one!" over and over.

I'm sorry you're offended that people are no longer happy with their iPhones. I bought my 3G on release day and only now am I getting bored of it. It's pretty weak compared to newer announced phones. I'm not a bandwagon jumper so I'm waiting for the next iPhone to be announced to make an educated decision. The same thing I would hope many people do if they are still willing to wait.

You would make that post considering this thread.

None of what you posted is what goes on here but rather "Check out the Palm Pre." Very relevant to the iPhone. As for being offended, that's a joke. I'm "bored" with my iPhone as well but don't defend the random "This phone is a killer" threads that pop up all the time... on MacRumors. I simply don't care to discuss other phones here; That's what HowardForums and Phonescoop are for and offer. Do you come here to discuss Dell issues as well?

Yea... I would... It has made for good conversation considering well over 700 posts have been made in that thread. Most discussion is pros and cons of the iPhone to the Nexus One. Like I said earlier... Most people in this forum are iPhone users and are curious what else is out there that will be options along with the new iPhone. You don't like good discussion then put my on your block list. I have never been here criticizing what devices others chose to buy. I actually wait and make educated decisions on all my purchases (reason why my thread wasn't "I JUST BOUGHT A NEXUS ONE!"). I am active in the iPhone community helping users jailbreak, theme their phones without Winterboard, installing LockInfo, writing LockInfo plugins and various other Unix based fixes for the iPhone.

But... If you think that I'm just Anti-iPhone and waiting to buy the next non-Apple device to hit the shelves you're mistaken. Many posts here regarding Android devices refer to it as a competitor and we await to see what Apple does to compete. Competition is good for the consumers. If you'd rather ignore any other devices, good for you. Just don't act like it's not relevant.

Oh and by the way, there are lots of posts and even rumors about things that happen in the PC world followed by "When do you think Apple will do something like this?"

The point is over your head. You're so busy being defensive (when I didn't even comment about you) that you can't even see the fact that you're defending comparison while I'm pointing out posts such as "Check out this phone - I want it."

Fine. Norris was replying to me, which is why I got that impression in the first place.

Back on topic, hopefully the 4.0 announcement will start generating some more excitement for the next gen iPhone!

No, it was about the posts that have no intention of discussing comparisons and simply to use this forum as a mobile device forum.

I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for on Thursday. Even more to tinker with!

Isn't it weird how sites are reporting the phone will be announced on June 22, when WWDC isn't supposed to begin until June 23?

Maybe the phone is due for a release on June 22, and we can possibly here an announcement this Thursday along with the iPhone 4.0 OS update? Just wishful thinking lol.

Thats why its still rumors. Until it comes from Apple, it will be just that, unconfirmed rumors. But too many people take info from blogs like the gospel. Sometimes they're right, sometimes they're not.
