OK.. I sent mine in for repair to applecare.. they sent me the "repaired" phone but I got a 7 series model again! gotta set up another repair

got my replacement back

hello all,

I got my replacement back and I am glad to say it is a 5*** model.

My adventure ends here.

I am satisfied, even though I have a stuck pixel ( not bad, considering all other screens I had had 2 or more bad pixels, somewhere on the screen).

I wish everybody the best !

Finally a conclusion! I agree Jerry. I just went to the apple store today and saw all the display models (about 10 of them) and I can see the white dot grid on ALL of them. I turned up the brightness on all of them. Some of the iPhones you can see the dots more than others. But it is on ALL of them. My friend has a 5, you can barely see it on his at max brightness, but it IS there. The 7 does have better colors and better contrast. The 5 is sharper and the black looks nice. So for people that have OCD, stop returning your iphones because of the dots-- they are on ALL iPhones. This is not a LCD issue anymore. NOW GO ENJOY YOUR IPHONE!!!! Jesus
I too have the faint polkadot issue on my iPhone, but after reading a good number of pages of this thread, I think I shall adopt your outlook here rather than worry too much about it.

you lucky!......you cant abandon the battle yet...... !
you cant abandon all the troops until apple acknowledges it!
did you specify that you wanted the 5* series during applecare?

does return pending show the tracking number when shipped? i dont think mine has shipped out yet

hey!

i'll be around, for sure!

yes, i specified i would have preferred a 5*** screen, if possible.

no...the return pending didn't show anything.I had a fedex guy showing up this morning.

7 series here and no screen problems. I doubt seriously if this issue has a lot to do with the series/version screen you have. If so the "7s" problem would be more widespread I think.

i got my replacement back and its a 7* series.....
im setting up another return soon
this SUCKs!
side by side, i really hate the 7* series
its a big difference.

So, by my count, I think that makes 2 that got a 5* series after sending in a repair, and 2 that got a 7* series back. So, maybe it really is just luck.

let me know how the 2nd return goes.. I might have to try again since they sent me another 7

Yep, thats what the "genius" at the Apple store told me. He said its totally random about the 5** and 7** screens, even when you send them in to AppleCare, they just pick up a phone from a pile and send it away, can be either one.

did you specify you wanted a 5* series during applecare repair?

yes, I specified that I wanted a 5 but they sent me a 7 with a dead pixel and white dots everywhere.. doesn't make any sense because I was very specific about the problem so you would think they would check the replacement before they sent it to me

so they refurbish some of the replacements..it even says in the receipt they sent back to me in the replacement box:

* The item has been exchanged by Apple for new or refurbished parts or products.

I never said they were converted to GIF, I said its LIKE GIF compression. And 256 to thousands of colors are NOT the only "steps". If you knew anything about graphic design, you know there are many variations between those two - its graphics cards that are generally limited to 256, thousands, millions, etc... But color data reduction can basically be customized and limited to any color quantity. Also, its not RGB, its YUV.

Also, I am sure you noticed that photos imported to the iPhone are greatly reduced in resolution and size, right? It was the first thing I noticed and is rather annoying. They use the same conversion done for the iPods. And when you download a photo from the phone, its CONVERTED to Jpg.

You are clearly missing the point. While the display may be limited to thousands of DISPLAY colors, there is further "optimization" of the GUI itself including the thumbs used in the photo library.

This optimization is what seems to create this VERY OBVIOUS "GIF effect" across the display resulting in a grid on certain phones that have high contrast and THATS what the thread is about - trying to figure out why its happening: software or hardware? By now I think we have our answer.

Well my point still stands. Then YOUR model is optimizing your images so they look like gifs and banded, etc. Send it back if you're seeing this. People with dots aren't seeing gif like images. I've seen the pics. The dots are completely something else. There's no gif like compression anywhere. If you're seeing anything remotely like that, I'd say you've got a problem. Especially in the photo thumbs. While sure, the OS may have a limited color palette they create all the graphics in to save memory space (not exactly necessary) there's no way they could use that palette for the jpegs and have them look remotely worth a crap. My thumbs are beautiful and sharp. Jpegs too. Whatever. Keep your $600 defective phone.

You really have no clue, do you. Its not MY model, its ALL iPhones. Mine, the one I handled to check out the dot grid and EVERY PHONE at the Old Orchard Apple Store had "gif like" thumbnails in the photo library and rendering of the home icons - most visible is the YouTube one since the TV has a nice gradient. Again, I think this is normal and fine.

Thank god you do do web design for a living or something! If you cant see it, fine, but its there to the trained eye as plain as day.

Also, reduced color palette is not to save space. Anyone would know that its to assure smooth "eye candy" effects of OS X on a limited powered device.

But like I said, you have no clue so I suggest you read the entire thread to get up to speed here.

And FYI, there are no JPEGs on the phone! So I dont see how your Jpegs look great when they dont exist!

I decided to keep the 7 model replacement that Applecare sent back to me. I compared the loaner phone (5 model) and the 7 by playing the same movie on both phones at the same time and putting the phones side by side. The clip is a 5 minute comedy show that I downloaded from the internet so the quality is so-so. The movie looks VERY GOOD on the 7 model - blacks look very smooth, no pixelation. On the 5 model, you can see pixelation everywhere and the picture is not even close to the smoothness as the 7. I was very surprised. Also, the color looks much better on the 7 - has a very warm feel. On the 5, red colors look washed out and almost pinkish.

I sent in my 7 a couple days ago because I hated the white dots and I wanted the dot-less 5 model. But I'm glad I played this movie on both phones and compared them side by side. Now I like the 7 much better! I don't know why there is so much pixelation on the 5 when playing the movie... and no pixelation on the 7 with smooth black colors.

Actually, you are the one with no clue. The previous poster is entirely correct. It is not every phone and it has nothing to do with gifs or pixelation due to rendering. The pattern is not uniform, otherwise, I might be inclined to agree with you. If you turn the brightness all the way up on a 7 series phone that has this defect and then reboot it, it doesn't appear until the 3rd of 4th second. Now look closely at the pattern, in the lower right quarter of the screen, the dots are hoizontally and vertically aligned. On the rest of the screen the dots line up on the diagonals. Explain that with your pixelated gif rendering theory.

Actually I did - id you read any of the posts. If you knew anything about rendering you would know that jpeg to gif conversions result in UNEVEN pattern except in solid colors areas - which is pretty much what is happening. The dots concentrate and fall out of place around text and icons but are evenly spaced in the open black areas, etc.... I have now seen over 20 iPhones, they all display this way - gif like thumbnails, etc... again, I think thats fine and by design.

And for the record, this is the last time I am going to say this! LOL Its a gif LIKE rendering. I not once said it was converting ANYTHING to gif, just that the patter is LIKE gif rendering.

The simple truth is something, via rendering, is causing this effect, right? Hardware ruled out as the root cause, but the construction of some 7 series iPhones pronounces the dots, right?

Please read the thread.

So what did we decide, that this a is a problem and if you have you should get it replaced? This is my third iphone, and I have the white dots, did not on the previous two, but my phone works great other than that. I really am scared to get a worse of phone. Is it something that can be fixed by an update?

it is really up to you.

i received a 5*** model as a replacement and i am happy with the screen overall.I really felt like it was better for me and the white dots were quite visible on my 7***.
however this screen is not perfect either: it came with one bright red pixel near the calendar icon and another one, newly found, at the bottom right of the screen.

Am i going to exchange again?

for the time being, no.

I'd like to see if either apple solves the white dot issue with a software update or if they decide to up the number of 5*** screens in the future(or another model, who knows?)

For now, i am ok.

I don't know how much this helps but I just noticed something that hasnt been mentioned here. If you tap on any of the bottom row buttons (most notably the ipod) right before the app opens up the button will be filled with the infamous dots. You have to look closely because it happens right after you release your finger. This could go two ways, either due to the touch or its because the button dims and then relightens when you release it so it could be a rendering issue. Try it out, its easiest to catch on the ipod button.

Wow, I notice it now when i have my nose touching the screen staring at it.
The iPod icon dithers for a sec during the transition, because the transition has to be rendered.
I also notice the white dots... allthough very faint, they do appear on boot, doesn't bother me, I think most of you guys are too close to the screen....
