I got a 7 that had uneven illumination and was darker at the bottom. I also watched a video on it and was disappointed in the way darker areas displayed - in fact, I didn't enjoy watching it at all because of this. Today I got a replacement and it's a 5. The display is evenly illuminated from top to bottom, except for a very slight pinching/bleed at the bottom (don't like it, but I'm going to live with it). There is a significant difference in video playback with the same film! This one is clearly superior in terms of showing darker areas without losing detail. Unlike the previous one I had, this one is super in terms of video playback.

If Apple is to use different manufacturers, it has to make sure that they are of comparable quality. The same problem exists, or existed, in their Laptop computers. It's unfair to customers to have to play the quality lottery when paying so much for these products. We pay more in order to get CONSISTENT and reliable quality (and because we're suckers!).

Just wanted to throw this out there, I'm on the phone with Apple right now and they're sending me a replacement due to the white checkered dots issue. No questions about model, etc. etc.

He asked if I wanted to go ahead and buy the 2 year Apple Care plan for (USD) $59 and I decided to. This waves any [present and future] phone fees ($30, I believe) and the fees for a replacement phone ($30) and extends the warranty by a year. Seems totally worth it to me for $2.50 a month for two years.

Anyone know the chances of getting a new (refurb, w/e) phone vs. getting my own phone back with a new display? I would really rather get new/refurb since mine's taken a few scratches on the chrome/back.

Just thought i'd update some people on my situation. I had an iphone purchased end of july fist week of august. I was finally fed up with the blacks on screen and only reading more about it proved i wasnt seeing things. I made an appointment today with the genius bar. I knew from the start the "genius" i was lucky enough to get had an attitude problem as well as giving off the impression he didnt want to do **** for me. Anyway I begin to tell him about how my blacks are off and i believe its the same problem the touch is experiencing. The bright light in the apple store made it a little more difficult to prove my case. The genius says the screen looks fine and it may just be a different panel but its nothing they will give me a new iphone for. After battling a little bit I told him i guess its something I must live with. He continues to make me feel like an idiot and refuses to help me. I make one last attempt and load a picture through my browser of the jayz black album. This catches his attention and he pulls out his iphone to pull up the same picture and compare. He then says how mine does look a little different but its nothing more than "aspect ratio" or something like that and its no big deal. One of the other genius guys walks over to see whats going on. He whips out his iphone to compare and immediately says wow its experiencing the same problem as the touch and begins to show the other genius what i have been trying to say. the genius says "well you swap it out then". This new guys says fine no problem and goes gets another unit from the back for me and swaps it out for a new phone. Apparently my problem wasnt only visible with my eyes and luckily this guy backed me up. I checked the screen on the new iphone and its perfect. The jayz picture and greyscale chart test are much much much better tha my previous phone. Just thought this story might give some of you hope that there are newer units/refurbs thatwork perfectly and that if you fight your case hard enough you should be able to convince the so called geniuses. Definetly present a picture or chart to show some hard evidence.

Who else thinks they just changed the background on the home screen to be darker or not be affected by the brightness setting as much? Has anyone seen the checkered pattern anywhere but the homescreen and verified that it's gone now too?

I don't see any checkered pattern in any of the videos i have, none in Cover Flow or the battery charger screen. It looks like it is gone everywhere :)

What about the brightness issues? Does 1.1.1 fix that? I just compared my 7 panel with a coworker's 5 panel and his is MUCH brighter at full brightness.

Gray Bar Of Death

after hours of frustration i was able to factory reset my phone and was able to get into the Main screen how ever the single gray bar became a block across the entire screen. Pictures attached:
Picture 1. gray vertical line down screen apple start up frozen screen.
Picture 2-4 block image after factory reset though I-Tunes.
Not sure how to get rid of this, guess i will try screen resolution changes and color.?

Have any of you noticed a checkered pattern on the screen when black is being displayed on the screen? On my iphone on the home screen, I can see a light checkered pattern on the black screen behind the icons. This is my second iPhone as the previous one had dead pixels, and my previous iPhone did not have this light checkered pattern on the screen. I have access to another iPhone as well, and it does not have the checkered pattern either.

It is very faint, and I don't know why it bothers me, but I just want the phone to be perfect. I've heard reports that they have several different manufacturers making the screens, so maybe it is just normal on my new screen.

Just curious if anyone else has this? I may be able to post a picture if needed. I'm not certain how well it'd come out. The really really odd part about it is that the screen looks awesome when you first turn it on and it has the black around the Apple logo. However, half-way through the boot-up process is when the checkered pattern appears. I'm not sure if this means it is a software issue, or if it is something else.

I can't say I haven't considered returning this phone as well, but I hate to be so picky. Anyone else notice this?

-Steve

Here are images that display exactly what we are talking about:
