Sure, they are.
These days smartphones (and tablets) are workstations.
If Turbo Boost and Hyperthreading doesn't give the Core-M an edge over the A9, than maybe the iPhone even has better sustained performance. Which invites the question, why still buy PCs?

Well there seems to be a different between the iPhone 5s and 6. Here an additional report about small improvements:

Source: http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/mobi...vs-iphone-5s-should-you-get-apples-new-mobile

However, the german computer magazine which wrote this too, is very good. I believe them.
But maybe you right, perhaps its the processor. How knows? Fact is that there are a lot of reports that the iPhone SE has a better TouchID as the 5s.
Subjective opinions and tape, vs. official information and hardware confirmation. The controller was even found to be the same.

It's a great phone.
I've got the iPhone 6s Plus on my main line and my iPhone SE on my third line, and I use them interchangeably.
Design wise, I feel the 5s/SE is the pinnacle of design.
The square chamfered edges, the round buttons are just gorgeous. I loved my iphine 4s and actually waited to get the 5 because I couldn't pull away from the 4s, but my friend spilled water on her iPhone and I gifted her mine. So as soon as I left FedEx I went and got my 5. And that was it. I was in love.
So when the SE came out, it was a done deal. No question I'd get it.

I still plan to purchase a SE. I do not care that better spec'd iPhones exist. This one will serve my needs just fine and for an added bonus, it fits in my pockets. We all know the 6s+ has better specs...most of us just don't care.

great, but for me the screen is way to small now after my 6 Plus. I cant and will not go back to anything smaller. That screen is so small its ridiculous.

...in just the same way that the 5.5 inch screen of the 6/6s + is ridiculously big for a phone. It's a phablet in fact, a different product, not exactly a smartphone.

I went to a birthday party last night, but had to stop at Best Buy on the way and buy an SE, my first iPhone.

I've wanted an iPhone since the Thunderbolt release day when I bought the HTC.

It's still in the box at home, waiting for me to get home tonight to unpack it. I'm pretty excited, as are others.

The price is RIGHT for this SE.........399.00!

I LOVED my Thunderbolt even though I'm an Apple fanboy....awesome phone. I waited till Apple put in LTE in the iPhone 5 to make the switch.

Can't believe we are now arguaing over our iPhones. Used to be arguaing between an Android phone and Apples iOS phones. Little children have to say their's the best. Why do you even care about this ? A new and faster one will come out in about 5 1/2 months that will blow our current ones out of the water (Hope), and then what, argue about that one and say, so what, its only a bit faster or better to justify our current ones ?

Got the 64GB Space Grey today.

It will replace a 4.7" iPhone 6 and 3.5" iPhone 4S (still useful in some situations). I tried loving the 6 for 1.5 years, but simply can't. It has many nice aspects, but for me those are outweighed by too many annoyances when using it. The 4S is still a great device, but it's getting too slow and pretty much every app can't be properly used anymore on a 3.5" screen.

Impressions of the SE so far:

For me the 4" form factor and design of the iPhone 5/5s is actually completely new and right in the middle, which turns out to be really nice. I remember that I felt like I could do so much more with the 6 due to the extra screen real-estate. And while that's still true in some scenarios, being able to properly hold a phone and reach everything turns out to be so much more important. I feel like I'm way faster doing pretty much anything, and without any effort. Not balancing the phone in your hand to touch something is pretty amazing. I'm still afraid I'll drop it (newness and all), but given that I drop my 6 about once a week and almost never dropped the 4s in all those years, I think it'll be fine.

I noticed a yellowish tint at the top during setup on the white screen, but only from a certain angle and because I read about it here. Haven't noticed it since. Overall the screen is more yellowish compared to the 6 (which is very blue). I guess it's good for the eyes, and without another phone/screen right next to it I simply can't tell.

The power button rattles when I shake the phone. Haven't heard it once during normal use though. Even went jogging with it while holding it in my hand, but that's not enough "shaking" to rattle it. So for me a non-issue.

Don't know what kind of CPU it has, and won't check. Whatever it is, it's fast.

Bluetooth earphones work great.

The screen attracts dust like crazy. Not sure if it's the newness, and the static-ness or whatever will lessen after some use. Not that big of a deal though; a quick swipe and it's gone. And in comparison the screen of the 6 is a huge smudge-magnet. Not noticing many finger smudges so far on the SE.

The screen quality itself is definitely different than that of the 6. I'm not sure that I'd call it worse per se. Comparing them side-by-side the 6 has my preference. Probably due to the rounded edges, the screen being closer to the glass (at least it seems that way) and the larger screen. But I'm pretty sure every larger screen automatically feels "better". In practice (i.e. not using two phones side-by-side for constant comparison) I've completely forgotten the 6 and the SE screen looks awesome. It also looks way better than the 4s, that's for sure.

The vibration motor is loud. I believe the 6s uses the element that also makes the 3D Touch work, and the 6 still has a normal motor. People seem to prefer the 6s's vibrations, but I've never felt those. The 6's motor is way less pronounced though. Not sure I want to lay the SE on a table, because buzzes will be heard across the room.

Not much else to say for now. Unless something goes terribly wrong in the next couple of days or there's some big hardware defect I haven't noticed yet, I'm pretty sure this will be my favorite Apple device to date. The design, size, using it, ... I love everything about it.

I have an iPhone 6s Plus but I have to admit that SE is a great phone, probably best design ever for an iPhone. I don't think that Apple will make a design like this in the future.

Best design and bests parts makes the best iPhone.

On the touchID discussion - after using the 5S for a few years and now the SE: yes it is faster and more accurate and way better with moisture. Different hardware? Who cares - it works better.

The SE is my favorite all around phone but the fondle factor of the Edge phone was hard to beat.

The only people arguing are the ones that say it's too small but in secret they really want one but won't admit it.
