FYI this would mean Apple would be discontinuing the iPhone SE without a replacement for a time. At least in the EU.

EU is requiring devices to be USB C before end of 2024. So if a model isn't announced until 2025 Apple will be unable to sell the phone across the EU until a new device is released.

Add to that, I believe they passed the replaceable battery mandate. Which would mean that starting 2027 all iPhones would have to have a replaceable battery. Which would mean a 2025 iPhone SE would have a less than 2 year life cycle unless they also made the battery change at the same time.

A new model is certainly not coming out anytime soon! Hopefully Apple keeps a similar price tag for the future model.
Fast moving Android phone companies in China can put out a new phone model in 6 weeks. Apple can put out any model they feel like, whenever they feel like. Don’t fall for the “drip drip drip" marketing mystique BS.

People telling people to get an 11-13 iphone obviously dont realize who this phone is for.
These people who like iphone Se models do not care about the latest and greatest features. THey want the apple experience in a compact size.

An 11 makes no sense because the 11 and SE share a chipset and thus support will be the same length. The size of the 11 is not going to be wanted by them.

The 12/13 mini also arent going to be compatiable because these people want touch ID and not Face ID and not to mention they are still bigger than the iphone SE is.
Other than being .01 inches thicker, the iPhone 13 mini is actually smaller in size and weight than the SE3. The 12 mini is thinner than the 13, so it is only .1 mm thicker than the SE3, and is even lighter than the 13 mini. The screen is larger than the SE3, but the screen to body ratio is much larger, so the actual phone is smaller. The mini is a good balance between screen and size, but so many people get the size comparisons wrong that I wonder if they have even held one to compare it to the other models, as it a truly great device and deserved a better fate.

I figured I would hate Face ID, but on my 13 mini it actually works a bit better than the Touch ID on my iPad. Both work well, though.

I’m curious exactly which companies you are referring to, as that seems a rather incredible timeline.

This certainly isn’t true for Apple’s flagship new models where they have to worry about new production processes. Even with the SE that repurposes old parts, they do have to worry about actual part availability and retooling, as the volumes produced are substantial.

I know the original rumors were that this would adopt the iPhone XR's body style and feature-set (albeit with an updated camera and a much newer SoC than the A12 Bionic), but I'm not totally sure what the point of that would be. Yes, you still get to cheap out and only offer one camera lens, but past that, it's not like there is anything that needs preserving for those who want an outgoing design with newer innards. If Dynamic Island really is the new convention, then it makes sense to preserve a phone without it. And sure, both the iPhone XR and iPhone 11 had a good display that is lower-end compared to what's in any 6.1" iPhone 12, 13, or 14 model. But, the improvement on the display resolution as well as the smaller notch on the 13 and 14 would seem to be the version to "preserve" in the form of a new SE, rather than what was in the XR and 11.

Given that the 14 is probably the last mainstream non-Pro iPhone series to not have Dynamic Island, I'm guessing that Apple will wait until the iPhone 14 ages to being the oldest/slowest iPhone they have before they replace it with a new SE that externally looks identical, but has whatever the non-Pro iPhone 16 or iPhone 17 would otherwise come with (in terms of the SoC, wireless standards, and maybe even the camera) and then it'll be the last iPhone with a notch rather than Dynamic Island.

I'm just tired of being treated like the red headed stepchild because I suffer with PWM. At least give us one phone that is a decent size with an LCD screen and modern internals. The fact that they wouldn't even put night mode on the SE2022 is ridiculous.

Correct on all points.

I still think an iPhone SE 4 based on the iPhone 13 mini is still being seriously considered. It will switch to a larger power button with Touch ID on the button and only one image sensor in the rear. The only reason why it's being held up is trying to get the cost of the display down, something Apple could do wiith expanded BOE display production.

The SE3 looks like a joke next to anything close to the price, be it the 7A or Nothing Phone 1 or whatever.

I really did want to see an SE4 sooner. An iPhone 12 chassis, about that level of screen, and a single camera would be a fine upgrade.

The 12/13 mini have a larger display but are physically smaller in overall size (height and width) and weight than the SE. That's what makes the mini appealing over the SE for those who are looking for a small(er) phone.

I loved getting a larger screen in a smaller phone when i upgraded from the 6s to the 12 mini! I have big hands but no desire for a bigger phone.

My roommate is a perfect exalple of someone who doesn’t want a mini. They prefer the SE design and Touch ID. I let him use my old Mini and he said it’s nice but he disliked the feel of it compared to his Se2

EU is requiring devices to be USB C before end of 2024.

That is for newly released products. Anything already on the market is grandfathered.

Practically speaking, it makes sense. Imagine the burden if retailers were tasked with sifting through inventory in the final days of 2024 to make sure no devices that could not charge through a USB-C port were left on the shelf. Not to mention, supply chain - warehouses needing to be cleared and such. No. They handle this by no longer certifying new products without USB-C charging (except in exempt cases per the regulation, like watches).

I think there’s a good chance the SE will be discontinued before the end of 2024 anyway, but the EU regulation won’t be a factor.

I've looked and seen no mention of any device being grandfathered in. It states that once the law goes into effect which could actually be as early as autumn 2024 that all devices up to 100w must include a USB-C charging cable and connection and list out the specs of the connections speed as well. Laptops will get added to the law in 2026.

The only way I can see Apple could get around it is if they went with a complete wireless charging solution with no cable at all.

There is also an EU mandate for all phone batteries in phones, handheld game consoles etc to have a replaceable battery starting in 2027. So basically over the course of the next a little over 3 years time phones will have to have a universal USB-C charging port and a replaceable battery.

Actually, the only part of that which wasn’t simply personal preference was the statement that the SE is smaller, which is actually incorrect, as the mini is smaller than the SE3.

As for the personal preference part, I went from an SE to a mini 13, but I’m not going to argue that everyone wants a mini, because personal preference doesn’t work that way. Some prefer the SE, some prefer the mini. If they were the same price, a more accurate ratio would be easier to determine, but it isn’t like Apple would release those numbers, anyway. Whatever they put out as the SE4 will sell well because the game is dealer’s choice and Apple is the dealer.

The mini is smaller than the SE. i have a mini and 6 with me right now.

Both are very flawed. The mini is going to be exchanged for a non-mini because it fails in the most important thing: displaying things on a screen. Too skinny in portrait, too skinny in landscape, notch blocks content in landscape.

The SE is just so low res it can’t show modern iOS functions correctly.

Both are just failures in design.

No that’s just wrong

apple will still able to sell the devices they just can’t bring out new devices without them.

I don't interpret it that way. Its affects all devices being sold and at the end of 2024 all mobile phones, tablets etc has do have USB-C.

I don't think Apple will update some of the models such as the SE, iPhone 14 (that prob will be sold 2024) but rather release them, maybe as an SE version but with USB-C.

Eu can’t stop apple selling devices which are already out. As I said it’s been clear that only new devices will need to be compliant

I have searched a good bit and finally found an article confirming what you said, seems like devices already on the market won't be affected.

There's also a part in the new legislation that if the device supports wireless charging, it might be exempt from the rule of needing USB-C.

Hopefully we will see USB-C sooner than 2024, looking at all the fun stuff Android phones can do (similar to ipad) it would be nice to just be able to dock the iPhone and use it as a computer with a second screen.
