tried restarts but no problems yet , i might try a restore later and perfect the process again ready for 1.3 firmware

Good news - did you leave your phone Jailbroken, and what method did you use for activation? I seem to always get activation errors popping up...

So, I can confirm the non-GUI process worked for me last night (tested it this morning with a co-worker's T-Mobile SIM, received a call just fine, and he placed a call as well). After some initial confusion and problems, I used a kind of combination of the unlock.iphone.no process and the hackint0sh process (since I really didn't want to have to BootCamp to do it). Basically:

  1. Turned off the iTunes Helper in Activity Monitor.
  2. Restored the iPhone using iTunes (7.4), to firmware 1.0.2.
  3. Quit iTunes before the iPhone booted.
  4. Removed my at&t SIM.
  5. Opened iTunes to pair (without activating) so I could use iNdependence 1.2 and other tools (it bitches if you haven't paired it at least once, but I didn't want to activate it through iTunes). Quit iTunes. Replaced SIM.
  6. Activated, jailbreaked, and installed SSH in iNdependence.
  7. Removed SIM again.
  8. Set up WiFi on the iPhone (turned off auto-lock).
  9. Installed Installer.app to the iPhone using the AppTapp installer.
  10. Used Installer.app to install the Community Sources and BSD Subsystem.
  11. Used SFTP in Transmit to transfer over the iUnlock components as well as add the /usr/local/etc/ directory and minicom config file (included in the 7-file iUnlock pack from iphone.unlock.no).
  12. Used Terminal to do the rest of the unlock guide (turning off CommCenter, running iUnlock and then the minicom commands, turning CommCenter back on)
  13. Also did the YouTube fix step (used Transmit to delete the files in the activation_records folder, and upload the patched files and the hacked lockdownd to the noted locations).

I had a couple sync problems with iTunes after this process last night (syncs would randomly die) but I believe this was because the phone was still in jailbreak mode from iNdependence. When I put it back in jail it seemed to behave and synced fine. With the YouTube fix, YouTube was perfectly functional.

When I put in his SIM this morning, the phone powered up and was on T-Mobile with no activation/fiddling necessary beyond that, it just worked. Didn't try any data stuff, since I don't seem to have the EDGE Network tab in my General > Network settings (where DO you get that?) and I wasn't sure how much in the way of charges it'd rack up on his T-Mobile account. Any guidance on the data stuff?

If you are already with AT&T and have an old plan you do not have to lose it when you activate a new iPhone, all you have to do is add the iPhone data plan to your exsisting plan. I know this because this is what I did. I was able to keep all my roll-over minutes and my 3 year old plan as well.

I have been told the contrary on several occasions. First when my first cell phone died and I had to buy a new one: want to buy a new handset? have to change plans. I bought an unlocked phone from eBay. Second, when I moved to a different state: new phone number? have to change plans. I kept my old phone number. Finally, when the iPhone came out: buy an iPhone? have to change plans.

So, I don't know how you got to keep your old plan, but I've been told definitively that I cannot.

Hey guys,

I am currently on the old AT&T Wireless (from 2004). Would I be able to use that SIM on iPhone. I don't care for data that much and pretty much I just use GPRS for a bit and Wifi.

Thanks much!

Well, if this is possible due to a bug on the iPhone, I am sure AT&T is going to force Apple to eliminate the bug. This may happen a few times and after that is going to be REAL hard to continue the hacking to unlock. It is a matter of time IMHO.

I wonder what the lawyers at AT&T and Apple are doing about this.
This is a big deal,

Did you have to activate using independance again after the Unlock?

And did you keep the SIM out of your phone while you were unlocking?

Thanks mate.

nope what i did last night -

jail broke it
put in my voda sim -
put pem file in
generated activation plist (MacActivationFile.plist)
Activated Phone with MacActivationFile.plist
then popped it back in jail

today

used a windows box to install the Gui unlock app and run it

I know several people who have done this as well as changed numbers in other states and never had to get a new plan. Things may have changed but now you can do all of this without changing your plan. I promise it's true, if you don't believe me call AT&T yourself and you will see. Oh and part of the activation process on iTunes asks you if you want to keep your old plan or start a new plan. All I had to do was add the $20 a month iPhone media to my old plan.

Seeing as how I asked a sales rep at an AT&T store on Saturday (following the price drop of the iPhone) about this, I can assure you that I've always been given the same line. This definitely seems weird.

I've just successfully unlocked using the iUnlock GUI at:-

http://www.freeiphoneunlock.com/unlock/

It works fine, but whenever I restart my iPhone it seems to lose it's unlock status and says Incorrect SIM.

I removed the Unlock program straight after by SFTP because obviously I didn't need it anymore - do I have to keep it in order for it to work?!

have you tried transferring the lockdown file to the libexec folder?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/1C28 Safari/419.3)

its a tiny movie time bomb. When played all iPhones within a 10 meter radius explode.

Haha thats what i heard too...:)

I know this may seem a strange question, but I'm already an AT&T customer for many years, with a phone that just died, no data plan, and several discounts I don't want to use.

Can I unlock the iPhone and use my AT&T sim card, or does it seem like AT&T are at blocking that ? They must have some info on which device a caller is using. (but I may not understand GSM)

all you have to do is activate it using a program. there are many out there but I recommend independence (google iactivator). after your phone is activated, just pop in your AT&T sim and you're ready to go.

So, the Settings > General > Network area showed EDGE once I had a T-Mobile SIM in. However, even using the wap.voicestream.com and blank user and password for EDGE I can't seem to get EDGE service on T-Mobile with my co-worker's SIM, it just times out. Does he have to have some kind of data plan, or are there some other settings required? This is in southern CA.

Except you still won't have a data plan. I wonder if att will let you add an iphone data plan to a non iphone account. I'm sure they won't as they know what people are doing.

Anyone??

Is there a voicemail waiting notification that still works on the unlocked iPhone so you at least know if you have a voicemail?

I thought people who were using T-Mobile courtesy the iPhoneSIMFree paid unlock were noting that when they had voicemails, they'd get a little red indicator on the Phone icon on the home screen (like if you had a number of visual voicemails, but without the number).

The other poster is right. All you have to do is add the data plan to your existing plan. This is what I did. It isn't hidden, or a back door, or anything like that. It is plain as day when you activate using iTunes. It is one of the choices on the screen. Unless this screen is built dynamically and for some reason you personally are being excluded, I can't imagine you not having this option as well. What happened when you tried to activate your iPhone with iTunes? Did you not get this option?

Just tried again and it says Incorrect SIM when my iPhone restarts.

Is there anyone that's used the iUnlock GUI? If so, what did you do re. activation in INdependance before or after, and did you have the new SIM in or out during the Unlock process?

the problem is when you have an older plan they make you change it to one of their more current plans.

I find it amusing how many people try to justify doing this with claims that it is not illegal. Any reverse engineered software modification is very illegal.
You are absolutely incorrect. The DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) makes it illegal to bypass a copy control mechanism. Due to the ways that telephone companies were abusing this act to lock in customers, congress specifically made an exemption to this law which allows unlocking of cellphones. It is NOT ILLEGAL.

God bless America, home of the free, and sometimes utterly clueless beings that happen to have access to the internet :)

It definitely is NOT ILLEGAL. Do some homework.

Thanks Guys ... T-Mobile USA , on my sweet iPhone!

Yeah! it worked for me too,
now me is wondering how can I set the T-Mobile Total Internet (i used to have T-Mobile Dash and the settings in Dash is ... wap.voicestream.com) should i use that APN for T-Mobile EDGE Settings?

What about YouTube? how do I make YouTube work on my T-Mobile EDGE network?

Thanks

EDGE, wifi, dialing in and out, texting all work. Now its time to make Youtube work.
Does Youtube not work? It just uses any data connection, so it should work on any network, regardless of Wifi or EDGE. I noticed that it scales the videos down to a low-bandwidth version if you are on EDGE, probably to avoid stuttering during playback.
