Question:

Is "Activating" the iPone a prerequesit for getting any of the further "unlocking" (i.e. so the phone can be used with another carrier) done?

I ask for a somewhat unrelated purpose: I am seriously considering purchasing the iPhone to use primarily in place of an iPod touch for the next 10 months until my VZW contract is up. The only reason I hesitate is because I'm worried that further firmware/itunes updates will leave me without a way to "Activate" the iPhone. Then I'll have an iNothingButAnUnusable400DollarPaperWeight.

Anyway, I figure if the first step in any unlocking/etc process is to activate the phone (which is all I need), then the moding/hacker community will always have significant interest in the activation process. And I'll rest a little easier knowing that activation process won't get thrown away in the future leaving me out in the cold.

Anyone Successfully Unlock an iPhone in Thailand?

If so, which carrier? Functionality? THX.

The other poster is right. All you have to do is add the data plan to your existing plan. This is what I did. It isn't hidden, or a back door, or anything like that. It is plain as day when you activate using iTunes. It is one of the choices on the screen. Unless this screen is built dynamically and for some reason you personally are being excluded, I can't imagine you not having this option as well. What happened when you tried to activate your iPhone with iTunes? Did you not get this option?

I have not purchased an iPhone because when I asked the sales rep at the AT&T store I was told that I would have to move to a contemporary plan. I was told that this is because I have an AT&T plan that was issued before Cingular bought AT&T wireless (which later merged with the rest of AT&T and became AT&T again). I have been told this ever since AT&T wireless became Cingular. And the change back to AT&T has had no effect on what I've been told. (Believe me, I've asked several times to several different people. Current AT&T locked phones won't recognize my SIM.)

Ahhhhhhhhh, In this case you are right you will have to get a new plan. Sorry about the confusion. If I had read your post a little deeper I would have seen that.

Wooooohoooo! Confirmed on Rogers Wireless in Vancouver, Canada. :)

SMS text and phone fully functional.

Methods: http://iphone.unlock.no/ and http://modmyiphone.com/wiki/index.ph...iPhone_iUnlock
These two tutorials seem to be the easiest to follow, but they have different approaches with minicom. http://iphone.unlock.no/ is more elegant, but the modmyiphone site has better laid out instructions.

Tips: Make sure to read the instructions very carefully with the SIM removed until the very end. Also, DO NOT sync without a SIM card inserted after the hack is completed. iTunes will prompt you to sign up with AT&T again and you will have to start over.

Big thanks to all the hard working developers!

Awesome! Time to get an iPhone! Thanks for posting up! :D

Has anyone called T-Mobile and spoken to them openly about using an iPhone?

This might reveal some info on what plans to use, or at the very least T-Mobile's feelings on people using iPhones on their network; I'm sure the CS folks have been briefed on it by now...

Does Youtube not work? It just uses any data connection, so it should work on any network, regardless of Wifi or EDGE. I noticed that it scales the videos down to a low-bandwidth version if you are on EDGE, probably to avoid stuttering during playback.

It does not work without hacking it to make it work. You can access youtube.com through edge or wi-fi, but it will not play videos because it requires some sort of macromedia flash player. Well, thats what I heard at least..

There is a thread on hackint0sh that has the steps and procedures to make youtube work. Am going to do it later this evening when I get off of work.

I actually just got off the phone with tmobile talking to them about switching to aTT because I want an iPhone. The guy actually said "you know, there are now cracks for the iPhone."

i tried running the GUI iUnlock and it quits at the "running baseband updater" part, has anyone else experienced this?

iphone unlock question

Hey, I just bought an iphone this morning and I need to unlock it. However, since it is not activated I cant figure out what version of firmwire its running on. Can someone tell me how to check, or should i just jailbreak the phone regardless and check before unlocking?

Foreign Carriers

Has anyone tried unlocked iphone with foreign carriers in other countries. I'm mainly interested to know if it'll work with China Unicom 中国联通. I bought my LG Shine in China and it came unlocked....works with ATT/Cingular but whenever you get a voicemail you get a blank text msg. weird.

right for me

Virgin UK /Vodafone UK /Orange UK all work

i have not tried my o2 work sim yet but i'd take a guess to say that will too

er, stupid question i'm sure, but do you have to re-run the whole unlock process or just the activation hack (using iNdependence for example) if you want to change sim card after successfully sim unocking?

Serious questions. . .why unlock?

Ok, serious question here. . .if I want an IPhone and want to us it as such, what are the benefits of unlocking for those in the US? I understand outside the US, but inside? You still need a carrier and a voice/data plan. . .in my own situation, my wife wants one and has a 49 voice plan via tmobile. . .to use the tmobile sim she would need to add a 20 data plan for 69. Similar to the ATT plans.

What am I missing.

1. You're under contract to T-Mobile

2. You'd like to use AT&T, but not be locked into a 2 year contract

3. You'd like an iPod Touch, but with bluetooth and a digital camera

4. You don't have a contract with anyone, want an iPhone and HATE AT&T (which seems to be pretty common on these forums...)

I just went on my lunch to buy an iPhone has anyone confirmed youtube works with the other methods after using the gui unlock?

Yes, youtube does work. You have to activate iit though using some scripts. If you go over to the hackint0sh forums, there is thread called something along the lines of youtube two step activation for mac os x. Just follow the easy steps. I am on my iphone so i can't link for you.
