A Question for our American Iphone cousins....
Good Info For UK O2 CUSTOMERS WHO THINK THEY CAN USE A LOCKED USA IPHONE

Can an iPhone bought in the US be activated in the UK or Germany?
I'm thinking of buying an iPhone when I got to the States to visit my mom. If I buy one there, can I bring it back to London and activate it with O2 here?
I'm NOT talking about unlocking the sim. I'm asking if an iPhone bought anywhere in the world can be activated with any of Apple's cellular providers in their respective countries.

Good question. But as long as the Euro iPhones are not out no one knows if they have the same firmware (same baseband?).

Of course it won't, yor IMEI number on the phone is locked to the carrier, the agreement between apple and the carrier is that the phone always stayed locked to the carrier.

Sorry this might be a dumb question, but if the IMEI matters, how do the unlocks work currently? The IMEI stays the same. Will O2 keep a list of IMEI numbers and restrict devices accordingly?

Wouldn't that mean the current unlock hacks are changing the IMEI numbers?
I think Apple will have a unified firmware, which means all iPhones will run the same baseband firmware too.

So then,the question still stands...
If i buy an american iphone, put in my pay monthly uk sim card, without unlocking the phone, will it work?
Heres the scenario...
Buy USA Iphone tomorrow
Open it in UK.
Attach iphone to mac.
Update firmware to 1.1.1(when available)
Put UK o2 contacrt sim card in
Activate with Itunes
Hey Presto????????
If someone with a definitive answer to any of these steps could help out,id be grateful because some people are saying the IMEI in the American phone is unique to Apple/AT&T hook up,and that the UK model would have a different IMEI signifying the Apple/O2 deal.So would i have to unlock the phone for the features to work,or would i be able now to open the box,pop the sim card in and all is good, and if not,why not?
Im not a techy guy, although i have a basic knowledge, but nobody seems to have a definitive answer to the above scenraio, only a solution using the unlock solution, which i dont want to do because i dont want to risk the phone with a 1.1.1 update iminent.
Sorry to drone on,but can anyone give a definitive answer please.
Cheers
