Well with this news, I hope Apple will now finally realize that no one in the United States or anywhere else in the World is going to pay $500 for a locked phone if they have to sign a 2 year agreement and then only get Edge data service.

From the linked article re 1 million activations:

"They were so secretive about the iPhone they only released the final activation API to us the day of the launch. Most people didn’t even know they were activating through ATT with iTunes and not through Apple."

Sounds fishy to me. Even I knew the steps of iTunes activation prior to launch day. Apple made the process very public, complete with demo video. Yet "most" of the relevant AT&T employees were kept in the dark? Hmmm....

you are lucky! Only have to wait a few weeks. All news says that only UK, France and Germany will be included in Europe. Sitting here in Denmark I'm wondering if I should just go buy something else. It will be at least a year before we see anything here :-(

On the good side the iPhone may see updates w. 3G/GPS and ATM/color esspresso maker, high def. before...

at least I own stocks ;-)

I think the 'of' should've been an 'at'

I don't get it, I've been checking the retail locator many times, and the lights have been going on and off. At the beginning of the week almost all lights were red as well, the next day they light up.

It clearly states on the page that they get in iPhones almost every day..

I got tired of calling my local AT&T stores and the Apple Store in Sacramento, so I ordered an 8GB online this morning. I received a confirmation e-mail late this evening stating that it "will ship by July 20th". If I do find one locally before Apple ships my iPhone, can I still cancel my online order without paying any cancellation fees?
Thanks!

Yes you can cancel with no penalty.

It is quite funny how some haters were bashing the iPhone and calling it a brick that does not work due to some minor activation delays -- yet now, everyone is desperately trying to find and buy the iPhone.

Good luck to you trying to find one.

How Accurate are these numbers? the Store in South Hills (PA) Had stock yesterday. So i dunno if this is all correct or no. Your best bet is to physically check because sometimes information gets distorted specially when it comes to toys that are in Hi demand.

for what it's worth, I think they're fairly accurate. Stores get shipments, sell out, and then at the end of the day they're out of stock.

Well there will always be people who bought differenct companies stuff. And they feel the need to justify their purchase to themselves and others. Apple Fans have done it to themselves too. (Supporting the G3 and G4 Processors long into it obsoleteness waiting for the G5 PowerBook) So people who bought a PC could be afraid of Apples growth because on the rare chance that Apple Takes over the majority market share the PC people will need to revive their investment (Updating all their software for the new platform....) While migrating to Apple isn't that bad, for the people who made a choice a while back they feel emotionally connected to hate all things Apple. just like some Apple Fans hate All things Dell or Microsoft.

This is starting to make 2-3 weeks for online orders look pretty good.

Yeh i just placed an order for a 8g and a incase ill see how it goes from there the store is still not open yet so i dont know if they have 1 or 2 left but we'll see what happens.

Wow, I was laughing at the people who had bought iPhones to sell on eBay, but it may pay off for them after all!

I too am suspicious (as always with no-name rumor sites), but to be fair the rumor is constructed a bit more cleverly than that - what they supposedly didn't get was the API (application programming interface) for the activation, which is quite different than watching a video or reading about activation.

Still, it sounds quite absurd, risking a major meltdown over unspecified secrecy concerns (perhaps they were afraid of hacking of the procedure, who knows?). Oh well, if they have sold a million, we will hear from them shortly.

Unless Apple picks up the shipment, eBayers will be quite happy with these turn of events.
