iPhone 1G Dock compatible with Iphone 4

Hey guys, sorry if this has already been mentioned but I accidentally discovered something cool the other day.

I found my old first gen iPhone dock (which came with 1st Gen iPhones) and tried to connect my new iPhone 4 to it and it actually worked perfectly. One caveat to this however is it will only connect perfectly if the iPhone 4 doesn't have a bumper or case on it.

Not bad for a free dock.

And by the way, if you don't have this original dock, you can buy them on ebay (or elsewhere) for around 8 bucks.

hey guys,

I didnt really know where to put this question. So i ordered my iphone 4 from a local retailer here in Canada. So my phone was locked to Rogers Wireless. I had a problem with my phone so Applecare sent me out a brand new one. Is this new phone Apple unlocked, or would they have sent me out another one locked to my provider. The replacement phone came from Apple not Rogers. Is there any way on the phone to see this?

thanks alot

When you move the apps icons on the screen, you can't let any blank space between them.

It's possible to to thi with th "Empty" website :
- Open Safari on your iPhone or iPod touch
- Go to this address : http://iempty.tooliphone.net
- Tap "Customize" menu
- Tap Safari "+" button
- Choose "Add to home screen"
- Tap "Add" button

A transparent icon has been added on the springboard.
You can edit/move/delete it like any other application icon.

It allows to organize your screens a little or to make them "funny", like this :

Would be pretty funny ask to look at a friends phone and add a few of these. They would have no idea whats up with their home screen!

Is there any way to "force" iTunes into connecting to an iPhone?

Whenever I plug my iPhone 4 in it doesn't show up in iTunes. Sometimes it charges, sometimes it does nothing.

When in Safari, holding your fingertip down on a link instead of tapping it produces an information balloon that displays the underlying URL. The same thing happens in Mail when you hold a link, which makes this tip much more useful. Now when those “account update” e-mails appear, you can press and hold on the link to find out if you’re really going to be taken to the site the e-mail claims.—DF

Using the Search tool while listening to music

I was wondering if this is a setup issue or a change in functionality:

This is for the iphone4

I used to put my entire playlist on shuffle, I would then use the search function for a particular song and it would take me to that song in the order of the shuffle it was going to play. Now it just plays that one song and stops.

Any ideas?

Keeping pictures and texts

I have some older text and pictures I would like to keep. How do I do that?

All you need to do is sync the old iphone. With the new one just plug it in via the USB lead and when it asks you if it's a new iphone or a replacement (your's would be a replacement) just use the drop down menu to select replacement and restore from your old iPhone.

That way texts, emails, settings etc are kept too!

syncing to iphone from addy book only the groups you want

ok, just bought an iphone for myself & one for my daughter, & we both realized too late that we had options other than syncing all contacts from address book to phone. i've reached what i feel is a workable solution: i created several new groups w/in add bk, which would have only the contacts i wanted on my phone. then i numbered them - 1home for immed fam; 2biz for my most freq biz contacts; 3fam & 4friends, for those i call most; 5extfriends, 6extfam & 7extbiz, for those i call least - that way, they show up on iphone in the order in which i will use them most, plus they are grouped together at the top of the add bk list for easier syncing. hope this is helpful...technology can be challenging!

A little trick I stumbled on earlier today by accident: If you shake the phone while typing in a text field, you get a popup to undo text. (tested in MMS and notes)

I searched for 'shake' and 'undo' in this thread and didn't get any results..

although its for ipod function, somehow this is true when "shake to shuffle" is on.

It's amazing how difficult it can be to find the answer to what you think is a simple question!

Texting - everytime someone send me a text message or I sent them one, they get "attached" to the bottom of the string of messages that have already taken place - even if I or the other person is not using reply.

Is there a way to start new text "strings". I tried going to a particular contact and choosing to send a text, but that added to the bottom of the string as well.

Thanks fabulous iPhone forum folks!

as long as contact number is the same (even if contact name is different), text will be group into the same string.
its helpful on the other hand when searching for a text message from a particular person.

I have iphone 3G version 2.1, If you want to capture iphone screen u can hold sleep button and press home button. This will save screenshot of your screen in camera roll.

nice! still true for 3gs version 4.2.
thanks!

Ringer Mute

When your phone is ringing or just vibrating,
just press either volume buttons or sleep wake button to mute the ringing or vibrate without ending the call........Handy in some environments :D

Keyboard popping up with long texts

Hi there. Really hoping someone can help me with this.

When I recieve a long text message and click "view" (when the preview is on my homescreen) the message opens but so does the keyboard with the cursor flashing in the text field.

How do i turn this off? Everyone else i know just has the message, no keyboard. It is really annoying as to view the whole message i have to click "messages" at the top left of the screen then click the message from my list.

Eternal gratitude to whoever can help me :D

Thanks

Clare

How do I force quit out of an application? The process at the beginning of the thread tells me to hold the home button in, but that now takes me to voice control. What am I supposed to do then?

iPod controls from lockscreen

By double tapping the home button while you phone or iPod touch is locked an iPod control bar pops up. Hope this isn't a repeat.

Exit out of the app by single tapping the home button. Then access you multitasking bar by double tapping the home button, a bar with your recent apps should pop up (this is the multitasking bar). Then hold down on the app in the multitasking bar that is having problems. You should see a red circle pop up on the top of the app, click on it and it will be deleted from the multitasking bar and should restart the application. If you are on an iPod touch 2g or iPhone 3g and below than just exit out of the app and it should just restart.

options for keyboard buttons

in keyboard, when you press down some buttons for more than 2 secs, it will give you more options.
here are some examples:
1. period or dot button - single dot or 3 dots
2. question mark - normal or inverted
3. exclamation mark - normal or inverted
4. N - gives you Ñ, ñ
5. apostrophe and quotation marks - gives you several forms
6. dash - gives longer dash and circular dash
7. dollar sign - gives you several other currency signs
8. zero - gives you degree sign

while on the multitasking bar, if you swipe to extreme left, you would see ipod controls and lock button for orientation. you can lock your iphone screen orientation either portrait or landscape.

These are some great tips, surprisingly I found some tips I never knew about and I've been using my iPhone for a year and Ive had an iDevice long before that.

Go to the phone.app and dial *3001#12345#* and press call. It will take you to the field test feature of the phone. (I don't recommend making any changes)

It serves no purpose for most users, but its just cool to know how to do...
