^ Nothing screams FAN BOY more pathetically than 2 guys trying to DICTATE how another person will feel about their phone that they haven't purchased yet. Hey guys, how about you KEEP YOUR PHONE and LET HIM decide what he wants based on HIS interests and needs.

God...

Man you REALLY need to learn HOW to READ!

1. I didn't post anything specifically against NOT getting an Android based phone - I did post my specific worries but I DID state my personal concerns.

2. the op specifically posted "While I have had the iPhone since the first one came out, 3GS didn't excite me at all." Read that again ... didn't EXCITE me at all. This tells me he's looking for the latest and greatest in ooh's and aaahs'.

You're being a hater because I mentioned specifically to look beyond the GUI ooh's and aaah's?? That is sad. My first post is valid to just about anyone considering a switch to another platform. How on EARTH does it scream fan-boy?

At least we've offered advice of ANY kind to the op - he/she IS posting for advice on a public forum anyway. If the op really could make the decision without advice/help they wouldn't have needed to post at all, or maybe they posted to confirm or vilify their own decision.

I've used 3 S60 devices [Nokia 6620, E71 (3 times), and N85], 5 Blackberry's on BIS & BES [8700, 8100, 8120, 8300, 8320], 1 UIQ device [SE P990], and various feature phones [Motorola RAZR2 V9, Ericsson T18z, Ericsson T39m (twice), SE K750/K790a/K850i/W810i, etc]. I bought ALL of them for the need of a phone first, SMS/MMS, Calendar organization PIM management, and Email - including the T39m LONG ago.

I suggested other Android platforms that differ in hardware configuration. How does this scream as fan-boy? What just because I have iPhone in my signature? Please.

Lastly I did not DICTATE to the op NOT to get the Droid ... I simpy stated that if he/she is going to get the Droid for the ooh's and aaah's that he/she will be bored in 6mths. I know because I got may of the devices I've mentioned above because of the ooh's and aah's along with the needs I wanted them to do and got bored one way or another. You really need to read before pointing the fan-boy finger. It would be nice to offer your thoughts on the ops particular questions; instead of just picking at others.

Have you considered the fact that

Verizon can't do voice and data simultaneously? You can't look things up on the web while you are talking.

John
I don't think it's a stretch when I say that most people who consider switching from the iPhone want either a keyboard or hate AT&T. That's the reason I don't have an iPhone and have an iPod Touch instead. They're awful in my area. Verizon is infinitely better.

You couldn't with the first iPhone nor in areas outside of AT&T's limited 3g coverage (i.e., my house and most of my 3hr drive home from columbus) so I fail to see the advantage. Plus, if you're on wifi you can.

I hope the Droid does well, but I'm keeping my iPhone. AT&T 3G service in my area is excellent and the iPhone has all that I need.

Great topic, I'm in the similar boat.

I'm more and more confident I'll be going with a Droid soon through.

Bottom line is it's not perfect, the keyboard isn't great but it's useable (and I'm skeptical of early reviews and judgmental on smartphone keyboards, they all take adjustment.

The key is the network AT&T is horrible here and Verizon is good with 3G.

Having a smartphone without 3G to me is like having a Camaro and limiting to 35mph. It just makes no sense.

yes, that was a very good review. Thanks for sharing. I take issue with some of the things the review says, but I'll just mention one here. In the aesthetics department, I know it's all subjective, so there's no such thing as one phone looking better than another, objectively speaking.

Ok, and with that disclaimer: The iphone looks better. It's not close. There's nothing "gorgeous" about the droid's exterior. The best you can say about it is that it's inoffensive.

The only other thing I'll say is that a big part of which one is the right choice for a given individual is which ecosystem you'd rather be a part of (if either). Apple has itunes, the store (media as well as apps), mobile me, etc. Google has its vast empire of google apps, tie in to the amazon marketplace, etc.

Personally, I use both to some degree - I have gmail and mobile me; I've bought songs on both itunes and amazon. But all in all, I'm not going to lock myself in to google's apps, which I really don't like for the most part (contacts and calendar in particular). By contrast, I really like apple's ecosystem. I'm happy to be tied in with itunes, the app store, and mobile me. Obviously some people will take the opposite view, and I'm not going to debate it - I'm just saying it's something to consider that I haven't seen in a lot of reviews.

I might be looking into the Droid Eris, which comes out the same day and is only $99 after rebate. It's basically a rebadged HTC Hero for Verizon. The Motorola Droid is ugly, but it does seem impressive.

It will be interesting to see how Verizon's Network holds up once they get more Data Hogs sucking up bandwidth. Maybe it will do well, maybe it will show some cracks.

Where I live ATT coverage is good and I've had maybe 3 dropped calls in 18 months using an iPhone.

I've yet to own a phone that I didn't get bored with after 6 months.

Well then that is excellent - more money for your Apple products, investments and other hobbies. Maybe you don't go for the wow factor or are not fickle with your choice of phones as much as I am.

Thank you. I really appreciate your opinion and will be taking it into consideration.

Glad I could help.

Also of note ... today, according to engadget (I don't fully trust it but not finding another source yet), states Motorola announced the Euro version 3G/UMTS will arrive in UK/Germany soon enough along with multi-touch.

Motorola MILESTONE
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009...cial-multitouch-but-no-google-maps-navigator/

Same hardware specs according to the report but without Google's Maps Navigator and with MotoNav (I'm not sure what this service is).

So there may be a choice and possibility that it'll be compatible with either AT&T Wireless/West or with T-Mo USA. We'll see.

If you DO choose Verizon - then I'm sure your initial deal offer will not disappear in 30days after launch date.

Again weigh your options - what you want out of the smarpthone for NOW and what you possibly COULD want in say 6mths. If you get the chance play with one and if you know anyone that uses an Android smartphone daily - personally -take them with you to a Verizon store and let them show you what its like to run it at real world speeds.

Bon Chance on your choice.

That's what I would do. Sign up for a new Verizon account (with a new phone number), keep my AT&T account, and see how I liked VZW/the Droid.

If it worked for me, I'd have VZW port over my AT&T phone number, thus ending my AT&T contract.

If I wasn't interested in staying with VZW, I'd just cancel before the 30-day trial was over. Worst I'd be out would be the activation fee plus the number of days I used their network for...

This is exactly my plan. I've already reserved a Droid at Best Buy, and if I like it, I'll port my number, and say goodbye to AT&T. It really is such a shame that such a great device as the iPhone is on such a lousy network as AT&T.

Yeah it's all up the person, but generally Verizon is considered far superior to AT&T in just about everything besides maybe phone catalog. It's just great to know that in general I'll have a decent 3G signal in most places.

Verizon has the most subscribers in the country so I'm sure they are pretty well ready for any surges from Droids.

What makes you think they'd be ready for a surge in bandwidth hogs?

"AT&T research shows that just 3 percent of AT&T's smartphone customers [read iPhone users] use 40 percent of all smartphone data, that they consume 13 times the data of "the average smartphone customer," and represent less than 1 percent of AT&T’s total postpaid customer base."

That could be a MASSIVE surge for Verizon if the Droid and other Android devices are as popular as they're hoping.

Because they said they can, and their reputation as a reliable good provider has never really been chinked as far as I know so I can take them at their word.

On the other hand Cingular/ATT were awful prior to when Apple signed the deal and they are still are today.

Given how Verizon is supposedly going to charge extra for accessing exchange-based email, I don't think the iPhone is in any trouble (for now):
This may, of course, all change before release day.

at&t charges extra for exchange too...its only for suckers. just dont mention it and sign up for the $30 plan.

do some research on your own instead of blindly pasting a link trying to troll.

A lot of people use Slingplayer on Verizon. Lots more intense than web surfing.

Do they even have an Exchange plan for smartphones any more? Got a link to one? (Not the one for laptops with broadband connect cards.) They used to have one if you needed them to provide an ActiveSync server.

Google Sync (which is ActiveSync) works just fine on the $30 plan, btw.

Umm ya:

They also sneakily make it seem like the more expensive one is the only unlimited one.
