Posts like this are not needed in this thread. Who cares about an iPhone killer? If anything phones like Droid will make Apple do two things:

1. Finally create a truly next generation iPhone. The 3 year iPhone cycle has been a joke, with such minor differences Edge, to 3G, to a faster processor. Apple truly needs to innovate the design of the phone (better screen, get rid of the cheap plastic, etc).
2. Innovate the software. The software for the iPhone has also gotten very stale. The biggest changes were the App store which I love, but again no multitasking or easy way to launch apps. No home screen customization, etc.

I think the Droid and Android 2.0 are the best thing that could ever happen to this competition. I want Android to be VERY successful because it will only make the iPhone improve. I think it may also be time for Apple to go to a 6 month window for phones. Things change so quickly these days that 1 year is an eternity for cell phones.

We heard this same crap when all the supposed iphone killers were released. There is a reason iphone has the industry's highest satisfaction rates. Come up with something else.

I think Android is ok. Ima wait for the next iphone next year. All these rumors of the next iphone being slim hopefully apple picks up from these hints.

Yes you do have to JB.

How are you getting around the supposed 256MB limit to installed apps (you can't install apps on the SD card)? Are your Emus on the phone and your ROMs on the card?

Ungh for the last time. Only the apps main files are stored in that 256MB like the main .exe. Everything else the app installs is installed to the memory card. You could install hunderds of apps on that 256 mb

Kinda digging the Droid

I am a huge Apple fan and have gotten every iPhone on launch day. I am getting a little bored with the iPhone so I decided to pick up a Droid on launch day with a new number to try for the month along with my 3GS.

So far I like the Droid a lot. The keyboard is pretty nice once you get used to it. The display makes the iPhone looks like an old CRT monitor. The OS is def not as smooth and polished but for a gadget geek it is kind of fun. Like someone else mentioned, the Droid feels more like a mobile computer and the iPhone seems more like simple device designed for the masses.

The Android app store is disappointing. There are very few apps and the ones that are available (Facebook, Twidroid) are terrible compared to their iPhone counterparts. That being said, the NES and other emulators almost make up for the rest!

The build quality is very high and surpasses the 3GS with its plastic back and dusty screen. The Droid is built like a tank. The only weak part is the volume switch which is quite loose.

One major disappointment is the lack of Exchange support for ActiveSync security provisioning in Android 2.0. If your corporate email pushes a PIN requirement to your device, the Droid will not work. If anything will make me return the Droid this is it.

I am not sure which I will keep. The polish of the iPhone and the app store is nice. The multitasking and geekiness of the Drois is also nice. I have a few more weeks left before decision time and I'll let you know how it works out!

I read in a new Wired blog that the real battle will be whether Verizon/Moto follows the lead of T-Mobile in encouraging developers to take advantage of the open source nature of Android. The potential is already there to unlock multi-touch and tethering, things that Verizon/Moto chose not to enable at launch in the US.

Once the source code for Eclair hits the streets, there's going to be an interesting situation for Android carriers and mobile makers.

Aside from a few cracking probs, the 3GS build quality is solid, and sliding keyboards like on the Droid are very well known in the problem department.

I disagree

Aside from a few cracking probs, the 3GS build quality is solid, and sliding keyboards like on the Droid are very well known in the problem department.

I had to return two 3GSs because my display was yellow at the the bottom. My current 3GS has a loose volume switch and the silent switch is about to fall off. Further, a significant amount of dust and debris has accumulated in my display.

For a phone with 4 moving parts (unlock, home, volume and silent buttons) I must say that the build quality could be much better.

So far my launch Droid (usually a certain lemon when we're talking about launch iPhones) seems solid as a rock. The volume switch is the exception. If you just hold the 3GS and then the Droid the difference is obvious.

I would typically agree with you here, but the slider on the Droid feels really secure. It's beefed up with lots of metal in the sliding mechanism unlike a lot of plastic like most manufacturers use. But, we'll have to see overtime how well it holds up.

my experience

I bought a Droid at Costco recently to see if I really did want to switch to Verizon with a smartphone...

I guess the experience was better described by someone else..

The iphone is a computer that makes phone calls..

The Droid is a phone that can do some things a computer can..

Where I live, Madison, WI, coverage is about equal and where I travel for business I have never suffered from bad service areas from AT&T..heck, I could even make a call from Monument Valley..

In my experience the Droid is clunky, offers "workarounds" and does offer apps that are useful. I use a mac in my work and despise workarounds...either it can do it or it can't..every app I need is there although at 100,000 plus I am sure there are 99,950 I don't need or want..

I guess it comes down to this..

each phone and company will have its followers and detractors...the iphone works smoother and with less hassle for me but I get how some would like the Droid...iphone on Verizon...a better match for all...

I got my Droid tuesday and I do think I like it better then my iPhone.

First things first is the screen is amazing, absolutely amazing. It makes text so easy to read so on a lot of sites I don't even have to zoom in which makes web browsing an amazing experience. Clearly Apple is going to have to step their game up next iPhone to at least match the Droid's. I have found my brain telling me to pinch in though, really kinda stupid they didn't have this for the American release.

Secondly the build quality is great, I wasn't too sure but it just feels much more sturdy in your hands, like it's a tool rather then a toy. My only real complaint is the sliding motion is fairly stiff but it's not that big of a deal.

Third it's amazingly smooth when multitasking and you have to wonder why Apple hasn't added this at least to the 3GS. I can't tell you how nice it is to finally be able to browse the web, use Pandora, and have a messenger running. The notification bar is a small stroke of genius, you pull it down and it lets you know of notifications without interrupting anything.. so I can see what my friend just IMed me or what song is playing in Pandora (and if I touch the notification it jumps to that app).

The marketplace is fairly bare, It's not that huge of an issue for me because the apps I used on the iPhone (mainly just AIM, Pandora, Flycast, some games) are also available on Android. The games is the biggest (expected though) downfall for me, there simply isn't 3D games and there isn't enough polish in 2D ones. Google would be smart to throw some money at developers like MS did and get some 3D games going.. throw some adsense in it. Also I thought some of the things iPhone developers asked money for were ridiculous but the Android marketplace might be even worse.. things as simple as skins might have 99c pricetags, it's not that common but it makes me shake my head everytime. It is however really nice that if you uninstall a paid app (I'm guessing there is a time period) it will refund you automatically. The Android marketplace has a long way to go and I really have to believe it's because there are not enough big name, big money developers in it and it's mainly a community run one at this point, I think as more and more Android devices come out and are adopted (especially the Droid, since it's really the first killer android device).

Luckily the native apps are so great. The navigation is the obvious standout here, amazingly responsive, beautifully done. It's already come in use while we were looking for a job, found the job in the middle of nowhere, navigated to the nearest subway, and then back home. The gmail app is great, fast, and responsive. The browser is very good, since I don't have a 3GS (3G) it's hard to compare but it's only actual downfall is the lack of multitouch.

The biggest plus for me so far other then the mentioned screen has to be the network, I live in Asheville, NC with a metro of about 400k and yet we don't have 3G from AT&T, not to mention it's coverage alone is pretty poor. I know it's a mountainous region but Verizon still manages to cover this area damn near 100% everywhere I go with 3G. Even in my house (which is honestly outside of Asheville and tucked in a mountain) I still consistently get 3/4 bars with 3G. I don't think AT&T is in the position to cry poor and say it can't afford to put towers or upgrade 3G in this area.

The physical keyboard is fairly good, I've never used (at least full time) a physical keyboard but I'm really surprised at how I levitate right to it when I want to type something, since I came from the iPhone I expected to just use the soft keyboard more but there really is something about physical. I do want autocorrect option for the physical keyboard though since it seems like the common mistakes I make should easily be fixed without question.

The camera is a huge disappointment and easily the biggest. Being 5mp, having dual flash, it was a huge plus for me.. but the thing will not focus for **** and this is a well known problem. Not to mention the app is so slow. Apparently if a leaked doc is really a leaked doc they are going to attempt to fix the autofocus problem of the Droid in december with an update but until then the camera is close to unusable. The video recording on the other hand is very good, resolution is high, but quality is still very good. I think if you reduced the resolution a bit it would be better.

Honestly I don't miss a hell of a lot from the iPhone, the iPod app I do, the games, multitouch on the browser.. but most of these are mild wants. A question that popped into my head was if there was a Verizon iPhone would I go for it or the Droid and my response would probably be the Droid. It has it's downfalls but it's positive points far overshadow it, plus I feel like with this Droid a lot of the issues will be addressed, the app catalog will improve, the camera will (hopefully) be fixed, and I'd be surprised to see if there wasn't an identical browser released just with mulititouch patched in.

With the iPhone I'm not sure how I can answer.. will it be able to customize and multitask without voiding the warranty and going through the hassles and downfalls of jailbreaking anytime soon? Will the next iPhone have a screen on the level of the Droid's? Will it redesign the internals to make do what the Droid did (make a thin slider, Jobs specifically mentioned how he just didn't like how the plastic buttons took space from the screen)? It's too murky for me.

So I went and took a look at the droid. The phone itself was pretty good but I hated the keyboard. While I was there, I got a call from someone so I pulled out my iPhone to talk and the customer rep at Verizon told my cousin that he wanted to watch that crappy phone that I was using die and said some other questionable things about iPhone users that I thought was very offensive: DEFINITELY not a good way to win a customer.

Just because of that attitude, I put the droid down, walked out and will not be switching to droid or verizon.

Wow, if I was that sensitive about salespeople, I would never have gotten a Mac or drive a Mercedes . . . :D

You might not buy anything from a salesgeek that's a douche, but really, you're going to snub a whole product line and national carrier?

He was saying mean things (to put it lightly) about "ME" the customer who was actually thinking about switching over. If you were going to stay in a hotel, would you stay at the one where one of the staff person insults you or one where they don't bother you at all?

Well, here's what I would do. I would speak to management and inform them that they have a jackass working for them and that they have possibly lost a customer. Then I'd let the butt-kissing begin.

Would I stay at such a hotel as you've described. Yes, I would and I have, since I've generally gotten an upgraded room, meal credit and/or complimentary stay.

If you're just going to walk away, did you really win?

Yeah, that's a pretty big dick move.

I was overhearing a rep for about the 20+ minutes I was there (it must of started before, and was still going after i left) just bashing the iPhone constantly.

He made some valid points but it came off as childish really, what he should have been doing is presenting a Droid because there is little reason you should have to bash the iPhone to sell this awesome phone.

Hell myself I've shown some of the features and apps and two people after were convinced they had to have it. (note, I wasn't trying to sell them a phone)

I'd just move on and still consider getting it, I can't tell you how nice it is to finally be on 3G. Honestly a smartphone without 3G is like driving driving a Camaro at 35mph all the time.

Just wanted to chime in. Played with the Droid in my local Verizon store for a few minutes today, and I thought it was pretty good. I like the home screen, widgets, etc. I had no problem typing on the on-screen keyboard...did not try the physical one (as I wouldn't use it anyway). Seems like a pretty solid phone, despite the fact that it's really uglier than sin.

Anyway, I'm happy with my iPhone and will only switch back to Verizon if they pick it up and don't cripple it. I just like how seamlessly everything syncs and works with my Mac. No other phone can beat that.

And to the people who complain about the build quality of the iPhone, and dust getting under the screen, what in the WORLD are you doing with your phone? Seriously. I've had no problems. Got a perfect phone on the first shot. I think some of you people get out a magnifying glass and try to find every possible flaw. You guys do know that you can make calls on it and surf the Web, right? Geez.

I played with my brothers droid (yeah, get those dirty thoughts out of your sick minds!). The screen is very sharp, crisp, clear and WHITE. Not yellow or some variation of off white. The phone is not as cheap as I thought it was. Build quality is really nice. I like how the battery cover is tight and unobtrusive. You can't tell it's a battery door. I don't like the qwerty keyboard - would never use it and feels awkward. The scroll/swipe feature was a bit laggy as was the device recognizing me pressing an icon. It's not as "sensitive" as the iphone. Interface is nice, but seems a bit "clunky" to me. Not very intuitive.

All in all - a great first phone. I sill like my iphone though. I can say this, unless Apple fixes the screen issues and makes the resolution better, among other things, I will be holding off on an upgrade next year. Android does have potential.

This coming from an iPhone fan.

Contemplating the Plunge to Verizon to get away from AT&T

First and I am in love with my iPhone 3GS 16gb white and by far better than the Droid(wife has one) but I am a fan of service from wherever you are. This brings me to the issue of AT&T 3G service. I travel a lot to the midwest and when I'm there I'm only on the edge most of my trip while my wife is living the life on 3G Verizon service. I am tempted into going with Verizon for their service alone. I'd care less for the droid but right now is the only phone capable of competing with the iPhone. I heard rumors of a hybrid iPhone coming in the middle of next year but I'd rather just break my contract than go another year with diminishing service by AT&T. That lawsuit is not going to hold water against Verizon. I don't want to jailbreak my iPhone but that is the only way I can get it in Verizon. So I ask it to you Macrumor Forum, am I right in this assumption? Will apple take the necessary steps to keep their faithful customer happy and leave AT&T or at least give us another option?

As a consumer of Apple products, we all hope that that's part of the corporate vision; Apple shareholders may have their priorities in a different order.

A big factor in any future decision will be whether Apple's iPhone marketshare in the U.S. can sufficiently grow with the existing carrier or only one carrier in the market.

i didn't have a chance to read all of that just something about you playing with your brother and something something white color, not yellow or off-white, something something good build, tight, awkward and sensitivity.

:p

(my new year's resolution is maturity, sorry)

Lol.

Yeah, I knew it was coming :p

I picked my droid up and have both an iphone and a droid now

I am having a very difficult time getting over the lack of pinch, swipe, etc that the iPhone has. Apple was genius in patenting their touch technology, and it's a shame that all other companies will not be able to use it for years. :(

With that said, overall, I really like my iPhone better then the droid. My main use for my smart phone besides text, email, and web browsing is streaming music. The apps are about the same on both phones, but there is no Simplify Media for the Droid, and their developers told me they have Zero plans of making one. TukeWiki is a little bit better on the droid then the iphone, but crashes just as equally on both phones. In addition, as far as driving to work and back, some days work better then others on both the droid and the iphone, sometimes I can make it all the way to work without it cutting out, other days it does cut out. When it does, it's usually on my favorite song and I'm really pissed. I think it might cut out a little more on Verizon/Droid. I'm not sure if it's a network issue, or a stability issue with the app I am using, or a combination of both.

Keyboard, LOVE the iphone touch better then the physical or the touch on the droid. I have to say the droid touch screen keyboard is the SECOND BEST ONE ever made, but the iphone one is still a LOT better, I can type much faster and with accuracy.

Multitasking - everyone else has said it, the notifications bar, and multitasking are just awesome on the droid - non existent on the iphone. For that reason, I am having a VERY hard time making my mind up.

Call quality - I need to use the droid more, all my friends call me on my iphone so I've hardly used the droid yet. In San Diego, AT&T works pretty good, although I do have dropped calls usually when talking for more then 10 minutes... Also no 3G and Limited EDGE service in University Heights, whereas PERFECT signal on Verizon in that neighborhood.

Speaker - Definitely louder and clearer on the Droid. Plus my iphone speaker sometimes needs a reboot, as it acts all muffled and wierd until I reboot the phone... :(

Camera - Duh... Droid camera sucks, like everyone else says, iphone much better even though I have the 3G which is only 2MP.

Exchange Support - Haven't used Exchange on my iphone, but on the Droid, I can't stand the fact that it doesn't look up entries from the GAL (Global Address List) on the server. I'm not sure if there is something I can do on the droid to fix...

Combined Inbox - YES! That is better then the iPhone, but I get too confused, and think I like to keep my mailboxes seperate. I do like how it integrates mail much better, but I have to ask why they seperate Gmail from your other mailboxes and I have to use the gmail app! Maybe that's just a setting?

Widgets - This is definitely a huge advantage for Droid. I have a widget that quickly lets me turn wifi on/off, etc... Why doesn't apple allow this, I have to go through 3 screens on my iphone to turn the wifi on or off! They are being too closed in their business model and they better open up to more possibilities or they are going to loose market share, at least for the "geeks" like us on this board who like to customize our stuff!

Perhaps the deal breaker for me, is 7 more months to go on AT&T, $200 ETF, I think it might be best to just stick with my iPhone for now and see where the droid lies. The multitasking, widgets, and Verizon network are compelling, but I can still do things much faster on my iphone. I'm giving the droid one more week just to be fair!

Droid Camera

I got my Droid tuesday and I do think I like it better then my iPhone.

The camera is a huge disappointment and easily the biggest. Being 5mp, having dual flash, it was a huge plus for me.. but the thing will not focus for **** and this is a well known problem. I agree with most of your comments, but IMHO the iPhone is much more polished which results in efficiency for me.

I did want to point out that there are some great forums for the Droid, Droidforums.net. As it turns out, apparently there is a film (oil,...) that the Droid seems to com with from the factory. Once this is cleared, the camera works much better. You can search and read about this on the Droid forums.
