Another first day requestor here who's heard nothing yet. 3GS on PAYG on my 3G contract, so contract expires Jan. Keen to unlock since I have a US trip next month where a PAYG SIM would be very useful. Also I get no O2 reception at home, so plan to spend the next month playing around with some PAYG SIMs to work out where to port my number once my contract's up.

Submitted another request yesterday, so we'll wait and see. Partner submitted on Saturday, no response to him yet either.

Same here, applied on the first day heard nowt so I called O2 yesterday, and low and behold after about 4 hours got the txt and the phone was unlocked, give them a call, its worth a shot

When I called yesterday the agent I spoke to did nothing but fill the form in again, what did they say they did? Even the Customer Relations guy didn't seem to be able to do anything other than say he could see my request in the system, the Unlocking team seem uncontactable lol!

My saga continues.

Rang o2 today and eventually convinced someone to speak to Technical Support, who confirmed (as i had suggested a week or more ago) that as my phone was no longer active on their network (my number was transferred months ago), they couldn't unlock it.

They suggested I insert a P&G sim card which they offered to supply. i actually had one, which they then had to activate, but only added 1p credit.

Still couldn't connect to the o2 network, and following another call, found that they hadn't added any credit to the card. Now with the princely sum of 31 on the card, I now have a signal and have be ABSOLUTELY assured that I will get the text in the next 4 hours.

We shall see.

The moral of this story appears to be that if the phone is not active on the o2 network, they cant unlock it.

Woohoo, I'm unlocked. I signed up on the web form about a week ago and got the text yesterday. Swapped SIMs and connected to iTunes today and got the unlock confirmation message.

What's the best 3G network in the UK for the iPhone now? Orange or Vodafone? Or stick with O2?

Cheers
Matt

Guess it depends on where you are and where you want to use it. For me (based in devon) VF is the only one.

Im going to Vodaphone too. But on a 30day rolling contract as i don't want to be tied anywhere when iPhone v4 comes out. Im hoping there is a price war!!

Requested on the first day for both mine and my wifes 3gs which we upgraded to on release day. No text so called customer service. After a lengthy conversation where I was placed on hold numerous times I was eventually put through to a manager. They said that o2 had been having issues with the "unlatching of iphones". They would look into it and call me back. She did call and assured me that both handsets would be "unlatched" as she put it by midday tomorrow. She also promised to call me to confirm it had been done. Finally she offered me 1 months free line rental on each handset which I gratefully accepted. Well it is £120. :):)

Moral is this, complain in the right way and who knows what might happen. Either that or they just want to keep me sweet as I've been with them for almost 9 years.

Just thought I'd post to say I finally got my message to say I was unlocked today! It took a little chasing but I got there in the end :)

And me! Orange SIM card at home so will give that a try tonight. Voda, 3 and T-mobile ones on their way - my plan is to use each of them for a "normal" day at home and at work to try to get a "real world" view of signal quality. It's going to be an interesting month...

I've ordered an Orange one. I know their 2G near me sucks, but their coverage checker actually looks like 3G could be better. I can't move networks til June '11 anyway, and things will have changed by then but I'd still like to try the Orange SIM out. Main reason for unlock was so I can use International SIM cards rather than in the UK

After a second attempt, I received my unlock message today. :D

Put in a new sim (one from Cyprus) did a restore, and working brilliantly.

I'm guessing first time was because I didn't have enough credit.

Got my 3GS unlocked a few weeks ago

But got a replacement iphone from the Apple store and i thought i would have to go through all the contacting o2 to get this one unlocked.

But tried a other sim and connected it to itunes and a message telling me that my iphone is now unlocked.

Cool, I asked in the apple store about this yesterday, the manager didn't know, but seemed to think that it would be locked to the original network I was on, ie o2. Despite no longer being an o2 customer. Then I would have to ask o2 for the unlock, even though apple actually does the unlock, and as a non customer, o2 wouldn't be inclined to help me...
so, good news. :D

Just to check, do you just take out your O2 sim, and put in any other UK sim in, connect to iTunes and your done?

That hasn't worked for me so far. Got the text, took out my O2 SIM replacing it with an Orange PAYG SIM, connected to iTunes and got the message "Your phone has now been unlocked". However, the Orange PAYG SIM is resolutely showing No Service, and when I go into the "Network" section the message says "SIM not provisioned". I know I need to call 343 on Orange to activate, but there seems to be some problem getting the phone to talk to the SIM.

Will try a restore when I get home, but that will be late tonight...

So, I'm out of the country but I emailed O2 saying "hey, got a 2G can I get it unlocked?" They told me that since my UK sim is a Tesco PAYG one to contact Tesco with my IMEI and they'd unlock it.

Back in the UK in a week so let's see. (for anyone that doesn't know, Tesco mobile runs off the O2 network, and actually shows up as an O2 sim in my iPhone)

Then again they also told me they couldn't find any record of the 10 months I was with O2 (up until May this year) so who knows.

I'm back in the UK so I emailed Tesco and said "O2 told me to talk to you . . ." Got a reply back which literally said "I have no idea why O2 referred you to us". Emailed O2 again yesterday with an email that vaguely hinted that whoever handled my first request was an idiot.

Got another email from O2 just now saying they're unlocking my phone even though it's no longer used on their network. Joy unbounded. That only took 2 weeks

The moral of this story appears to be that if the phone is not active on the o2 network, they cant unlock it.

Interesting. I told them I had an old O2 sim I could stick in my iPhone if they needed me to but they just said they'll unlock the iPhone connected with my mobile no. Maybe it's cause I'm on Tesco, which basically is O2.

Let me know if Tesco mobile will work. The new £30pcm unlimited looks attractive.

Tesco Mobile works even without the phone being unlocked. The carrier's listed as Tesco in the settings but at the top of the screen it says it's on O2-UK.

I'd call orange and get the sim activated first

why are you expecting service on an unactivated SIM?

Because I'm new to this and the instructions that come with the SIM say:

1. To get going, simply pop your SIM card into your mobile
2. Call 343 to activate your SIM
3. Call 450 to top up.

So... how do I call 343 to activate my SIM on an unactivated SIM card?

Update- have now activated SIM through the website and I have Orange coverage in the office. Shame Orange's instructions weren't helpful...

Ok, having heard nothing since filling in the O2 online unlock form on 10 Nov. I decided to phone O2 on 202 free service. The guy I spoke to said the following - because I changed my handset in July 09 to a 3GS one from the original 3G supplied with the contract a year earlier I am not eligible for an unlock!
He said I should contact the original owner of the 3GS (I bought it off eBay) to determine whether the phone I bought was a PAYG model or was bought on contract.
Apparently if you have a PAYG phone (my son paid the big bucks for one too in July, bought from O2 online) they will not allow you to unlock until you have had the iphone for a minimum of 12 months. In the case of 3GS handsets this is in July 2010.
He said this situation may change at some future point, but was the policy right now.

If anyone has any information contrary to this please post it here. Thanks.
:(

I took a 3G out on contract in Jul 08. In Jul 09 I bought a PAYG 3GS from Apple and activated it with my contract SIM. O2 have unlocked the phone. I think the significant thing is what SIM card was the phone activated with not what do you use in it now.

I've used the original SIM from July 08 in the 3G and the 3GS phones. The guy at O2 said the unlock related to the handset not the SIM or the phone number.

For example, he said I could request an unlock on the 3G handset that I got with the original contract! I told him I'd sold it on Ebay so why would I want to do that??!!
