I've requested the unlock once.. Monday night in a hotel in Milton Keynes... oh my life is so fulfilling.. :)

I have a hacktivated iphone 3g that i'll still keep hacktivated, as there probably is no way to make this a proper unlocked iPhone. My contract is up in Jan, and i'll probably just get the latest greatest iPhone when it comes out in June, the only reason I want the unlock is so I can use an AT&T sim in my phone when I go across to the states...

at least I haven't had an email or text saying no, and they did say up to 14 days, so I'll just wait patiently, If i've heard nothing after 14 days, i'll give them a call..

They know this iPhone is my contract phone (even though i did swap it), as they updated the MAC on it when i wanted to access the cloud wifi, and it was never registered with any other sim... so, just wait patiently, and i'll get my unlock eventually..

Ordered my unlock on the 10th, just got this:

Just need to get a non-O2 sim to test now

Also- the IMEI i provided was for my PnG 3GS NOT the 3G i bought on contract last june (which i sold to pay for the 3GS)

Update:
Wooot... just remembered my work sim that i never use is on Voda...

Still nothing here. Not expecting an unlock really but not even had anything to say I'm not eligible.

I'm sure they're doing them all manually, they don't have an automated process for this. They'll get back to you eventually ....... I think I was just lucky in getting a quick response

Don't o2 have to provide the IMEI's to Apple who then unlock the phone on their side rather than the network....

requested my unlock at about 10pm on the 9th, got my text half an hour ago, works fine with a Voda contract sim, didnt have any internet settings, but im gonna be using the unlock with an Orange PAYG sim for the orange weds neways. Very Happy Bunny, will help with any resale value too :D

So, I've received my text from O2 that my iPhone has been unlocked - this despite the fact that my phone has never been registered with O2 and is actually a Japanese iPhone I bought on these forums. I've decided to be a guinea pig to see if this will work to get my phone unlocked. Currently it is hacktivated, but this may make it legally unlocked.

I will post screenshots of the process once I get it tried and if it works. Otherwise I'll post back my experience. The software is currently downloading through iTunes right now.

THIS DOES NOT WORK. I used it as a perfect opportunity to upgrade from 3.0 to 3.1.2, but other than that it's useless trying. The iPhone activation server obviously checks the carrier before it checks for unlock status, which is why this wouldn't work. The message I received was the one about not having the correct SIM card. Awk well, no loss!

another 3gs unlocked after buying a payg to replace my 3g one.

guess the question now is:

will o2 only unlock 1 phone per customer? so if you have a payg and know someone with a contract phone you might be able to bypass the fee :p

This is like waiting for a kettle to boil :D:D:D

completed my form on 9th at about 5pm local still waiting - guess they are not doing them in any particular order.

Got my unlock sms a couple of hours ago, now just waiting for the Phone to finish backing up (5 hours and counting and only 70 % done :() before popping in my Three Sim to confirm the unlock.

i'm not fussed about bypassing the fee for a payg, i'd just like to know if they would unlock a currently hacktivated UK o2 iphone if i said it was on PAYG, and gave them an alternative payg number that is registered in my name and has been for oooh a few years... would they spot it isn't actually an iphone sim.... blah blah blah...

then, i'll restore, and activate with my o2 sim, put in another non o2 sim, and voila, 2 legally unlocked iphones.. (i don't care much for cydia etc!)

Check my post above for information. I tried something similar and it doesn't work because of the way activation works.

You give your phone number and the iPhone's IMEI number on the unlock request, so logically this seems unlikely.

Got my text earlier to confirm - I have a PAYG 3GS with an official iPhone contract I took out last year with a 3G. Popped in a vodafone SIM, connected to iTunes and works fine.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that an O2 store manager told a customer that O2 received thousands of requests for unlocks and that they were working through them as quickly as possible, which backs up your post of doing it manually.

Also, a manual process would make more sense because they would have to verify that you are allowed to unlock, hence the amount of "human error" that is being encountered by users here.

but i have an IMEI, and a PAYG phone number. It is a UK phone, I'll restore, activate with my official o2 sim, put in another o2 sim, and it's just a payg iphone. my logic is that some things are slipping through the net, and this, might just be one of them... *grins*

Saying that, i'm still waiting for my first official unlock, so i'm not going to do anything until that gets done..

but yours is a japanese iphone, whereas mine is a UK iphone locked to o2, that i don't have to hacktivate, just have to unlock.. hell, i'm not even bothered about jailbreaking....

That will work then. Just make sure you apply now while there is still the rush as they're evidently not checking them properly. I'd say they're just looking at whether you're an o2 customer and how long you've been a customer before they send it.

I'd rather wait a day or so longer, til I get my official one unlocked, then as soon as i've done that, i'll be applying for my second one, and i'll see what happens..

I bought a PAYG 3GS last saturday and just saw this thread yesterday. I already have an older PAYG sim, so I put that one in the iphone and sent in a request for an unlock last night.

Hopefully, I'll find out soon enough if I can get it unlocked or not...

Just a quick update. I've received a rather pleasant reply to my email, informing me that my 16 GB iPhone 3G will soon be unlocked.

hmm...

I've replied, letting them know, as politely as possible, that I'm sure its new owner will be very pleased, once I break the news to them, but that I, however, would like my 32 GB iPhone 3GS unlocked, if you please!

More as it happens...

Well, I've just had another email. This one's offering to unlock someone else's iPhone for me! I think we have communication issues here but no matter.
The email linked to the unlock page but also offered me the option to email them my details. It seemed rude not to...

This all seems very positive.

does this mean

does this mean i can use my 1st generation iphone on any uk network now?

any pointers to the best deals for someone like me - which network and all that.
