i'm on an iPhone 3G contract since launch day on o2, the contract is due to finish in January 2010. I then bought a 3GS on launch and activated it with my existing sim - haven't even opened the new sim.

Im still going to be using o2 but it would be cool to unlock my iPhone just so that if i ever need to pop in another sim it would just work. I'm currently jailbroken just because i need the unlock when i go abroad every couple of months.

My question: if i unlock my 3GS now and something goes wrong with it, ie the battery loses its charge and i have to go to the genius bar. or i drop it and crack the screen and again go the the genius bar. Will the iPhone i get, also be unlocked? I'd rather be unlocked when i come to sell the phone at the end of may/early june than right now. I'm also fully insured against all types of damage/theft...

thanks guys!

Well, I've just had another email. This one's offering to unlock someone else's iPhone for me! I think we have communication issues here but no matter.
The email linked to the unlock page but also offered me the option to email them my details. It seemed rude not to...

This all seems very positive.

Yet another email has arrived from O2. This one is stating that my 3GS, as well as my old (and sold) 3G, will be unlatched in the next 14 days and I should expect a text confirming the happy event.

Now, about this chocolate... :)

if it hits the 14 days since I submitted my unlock request, I'm gonna re request... multiple e-mails, text messages, bah! I just want my main phone unlocking.... pfft...

i know i got the free chocolate, but that doesn't mean o2 can ignore me... can it?

M

Seems i got the short straw after all :(

I don't really know what to suggest, except the old adage that "one catches more flies with honey than with vinegar". I tend to have good outcomes whenever I deal with any customer service department.

This may seem obvious but I always try to remember that I'm not dealing with a faceless corporation, even though it seems like I am. There is a real person reading my emails and processing my requests and that person deserves to be treated with respect. I tend to re-read my draft emails from this perspective and edit them as necessary before sending them, ensuring that they come across as polite but chatty.

This approach seems to work wonders. After reading today's email informing me that my iPhone will be unlatched, I dashed off a quick email of thanks for a job well-done. Shortly after that, I received another email telling me that those kind of emails are rare but that they are the sort of thing that makes the job worthwhile.

Not a lot i can do till tomorrow week. I am slightly concerned since O2 agreed to terminate my contract after just six month (12 months ago) and my number was ported to VF at that time. I am wondering if perhaps when they input the number, it doesn't register as being on their system, and they think its a mistake and ignore.

Ah well we will see soon. :)

That may well be it. If you've had the refusal SMS, just use the "contact us" link on their home page to politely request their reason for the refusal. If O2 have terminated your contract, then they must regard your handset as being out-of-contract.

No. The whole point is that it is genuine and it comes from you! It doesn't really matter if the spelling and grammar are off. Just that you come across as a friendly kind of person.

Just joking. I fully agree with you. I treat people as I would want to be treated and found, except for a few exceptions, that it produces the best results.

Worked for a PAYG phone using a iPhone 3GS contract SIM -> Orange PAYG SIM

Just got my text:
Your iPhone is now unlocked, to use a non o2 sim card in your iPhone

Weird how they didn't capitalise the O in O2, or SIM. Anyhow - off to check!
(1 /12 contract left on iPhone 3G, sold for PAYG iPhone 3GS running the contract SIM). Who knows - the 3G is likely to have been unlocked rather than the 3GS.

Synced via iTunes, iPhone went to the emergency "plug into iTunes" mode, unconnected and reconnected a few times, then iTunes saw it, said there was a carrier update. went through the continue process (FAQ doesn't have anything in it seemed!).

<10 minutes, am now on Orange. Hello Orange. Pity O2 put up a 3G mast recently hehe. Oh well, Orange wednesdays at least.

Been 7 days tonight for me... and now I know there's a vague chance I might get mine unlocked, I'm even more impatient!!!

Official unlock received

OK, whats the best way to jailbreak an officially unlocked iphone through mac?

I have a jailbroken and unlocked iphone 3gs for which I have just received official O2 notification that I can unlock. The plan is to rebuild using iTunes to official firmware 3.1.2 and then jailbreak, hence my question. Any info greatly received.

So, I'm out of the country but I emailed O2 saying "hey, got a 2G can I get it unlocked?" They told me that since my UK sim is a Tesco PAYG one to contact Tesco with my IMEI and they'd unlock it.

Back in the UK in a week so let's see. (for anyone that doesn't know, Tesco mobile runs off the O2 network, and actually shows up as an O2 sim in my iPhone)

Then again they also told me they couldn't find any record of the 10 months I was with O2 (up until May this year) so who knows.

Let me know if Tesco mobile will work. The new £30pcm unlimited looks attractive.

Ive just received this text

"Your iphone is now unlocked. To use a non-o2 sim card in your iPhone

same as the person above, which is odd since the end of it has been chopped off. I submitted an unlock request for a 1 week old pay as you go 3GS that I use with a Simplicity sim. I'll have to see when I get home if this is truly unlocked or if O2 have accidently sent half a text to everyone!

Hi, when did you request this unlock?

Also, has anyone requested their unlock on Friday and received it yet?

Thanks

I requested it the very first day possible. I can confirm that it is definitely unlocked - after a restore I have got the 'Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked' screen - I would simply have tried another sim card but I only have O2 sims!

I requested friday night, and then again last night (just because I am too impatient :D) but haven't heard anything yet.

good to hear that your one week old 3GS is unlocked now! It gives me hope that mine will be unlocked as well..

Requested my unlock on the evening of the 9th for a 3GS bought on PAYG and activated with an O2 non-iPhone contract SIM (15 months into 18-month contract). I received the unlock text a couple of hours ago.

Now to see if I can get my iPhone classic unlocked too.

O2 say that it can take up to 2 weeks, and from what I have read it, like all good Reality TV shows, is in no particular order - well not that's discenrable to mere mortals like you and I :)

I wonder if O2 are first dealing with those customers who are still under contract to them, and as such cannot actually leave them.
