I guess this is all apple's recent moves all about, AppleTV, iPhone, 24/7 online with web app.

Honestly, I think apple is targeting a group of people, rather than mass market. This 24/7 wireless internet thing, IMHO, is unrealistic, and limited.

There were ideas of a internet platform, people do everything computer related on a web platform, unfortunately, its way too limited.

for example, wouldn't a real local app be faster, less battery consuming (with internet, iPhone only lasts 5 hrs anyway), and easier to store information, and more universal(like a tunnel, or a road trip to grand canyon)?

If you look at the youtube video you'll see that a doc running that web app can get real time info on his patients, including chest x rays, prescriptions, location in the hospital and echocardiograms.

It was amazing to see the guy zoom in on the chest xray using his fingers with the iPhone interface. Then the echo was a video...turn horizontal...amazing.

Almost makes me want to go to med school...almost =D

a local app won't do that will it?

that web app is really more for medical professionals rather than a parent who needs to monitor a child. But it shows you what it can do. Check out the youtube video and you'll want to become an MD just to use this software (no I'm not one). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uX_6yIO2bR8
True, they really need to do an iPhone specific version though. I know its of-topic, but Digg created a "Digg app" for the iPhone, and it's different than browsing Digg, but gorgeous and super-quick to check out. Not even a "mobile" version, but a true "iPhone" version. Pretty nice. They should definitely check into it if they start getting a lot of iPhone user attention.

I still think its a really nice website, but not really a web app. Same point though. SOLID browser and media support trumps a "local" app very much. Worth noting that YouTube and Google Maps are also local apps on the iPhone, but I think that this is mostly for tighter contacts integration on the Maps and simply for "placement" and "access restriction" for YouTube. As in "where is the feed coming from" type of thing.

no, it wouldn't. I didn't dispute the usefulness of internet, I was just saying internet can't do everything, and for many tasks, web app has more cons than pros.

My roommate is a doctor, I did see him using this type of stuff, its more like a web-server at hospital, doctors just log onto the server from home and check the status of each patient.

Understood, but for me the idea that a doc could monitor a patient real time from anywhere with net access like that with full video, pictures and audio is amazing.

Telemedicine is already growing, it will be interesting to see what impact the iPhone will have on its future.

can't update Treo

I have a Treo and have been using an iPhone for a week. The iPhone is much better, in my opinion. The Treo's screen is much too small, and it's an ungainly device. Have you ever tried to update the Treo's firmware? It's a major undertaking, and it's tough to find an update that's not years old. Cingular doesn't make regular updates available. The iPhone will update whenever it's connected to iTunes if necessary.

Its all politics, technology has been there for years, now a 24/7 mobile device with a modern browser... sure can help to enslave doctors more than ever.

Its all politics...

Great app - for the kids doctors.

For me the Mom - not so hot.

Mainly, I didn't see the guy entering an appointment into his Software and having that schedule that appointment into the Calendar. :D

And really, i wouldn't have to go online every time i needed to enter:

"Illness": 7-14-07, diarrhea 20 minutes after eating out at ______ (she's having some sort of issue that has no rhyme or reason).

I'm not opposed to a web solution, i've been looking for one to attempt to move from my Palm to a BB. I gave up that hunt after reading some other issues with the BB. Heck, I cna't even track HEIGHT on the app i'm using right now. A key part of their issues. Drives me crazy! Then how dare i want to track HGH injections instead of Insulin.

Overall, my life is centered around my kids - Homeschooling, Scoliosis and Turner's Syndrome.

The iPhone won't work for me - right now.

I'm excited to see new things come out though, the "public" clamoring for more is what gets new innovations done.

But I swear, the iPhone is bringing out a new "Apple Fanboy". Dang people, accept that it won't work for everyone. Competition is great for ALL :D I like the iPhone, it just doesn't work for me.

Great for you that it does!

Hey, no problem! I think people were just trying to be helpful. Hear that everyone? She's saying "BACK OFF! IT WON'T WORK", not "SUGGEST THINGS, AND CONFERENCE ON SOLUTIONS". I think that should do it. ;) I've misunderstood people like that before. Some people's "just trying to help" is often not given a clear "I don't want help", and suddenly the first person is being accused of being a "zealot". Guys tend to have this effect with their wives in trying to "fix" something she's just "complaining" about. Sticky lit'l wicket. :D

Not really....... not really that at all....

What i'd like to see is that people can accept that the iPhone works for some, and not call another persons phone a piece of crap (was on the first page in this thread).

I"m the only Palm user in a family of Window's Mobile devices.... i could make one of those work for me - but well, i purged my house of Microsoft, i have no desire to get one. But I don't tell my brother - hey, your phone sucks, why didn't you get a Palm version?? (he has a HTC6700 for the record). I might THINK IT, but it works for him..... so that is all that matters.

But hey, you all paid a boat load of money for you phones - of course they are gold plated and the end all be all of phones..... :D

Tracey.... happy in the "old school" and rarely online with her phone

What I would like to see is people not come to an iPhone specific sub-forum and essentially insult people who have iPhones or support iPhones.

It is fine if you are interested in getting information or learning about the iPhone, but if your intent is to take the air out of peopes sails go somewhere else.

To be honest, nobody cares what phone you have or don't have.

This is an iPhone versus Treo thread. I would say the people most capable commenting are those who have owned both.

Not really....... not really that at all....
Actually, if you don't mind... I'm still spot on, you just don't want to agree... which is fine too, I guess...

Maybe you're just misinterpreting what I said. I'm not sure. I think the Treo is fine for certain people, and maybe the iPhone won't work out. See? We agree. I'll add that the person who called your Treo "crap" was THAT person, and not everyone who thinks differently than you about the Treo solution is that dismissive about it. Most of all not ME. As I said, you don't want someone to second judge your decision of the Treo. I get it. That's all I said.

This is just an interpretation of what you've already said, so you don't have to disagree simply to demonstrate how "wrong" I am, even though you're not really disagreeing with ME so much as the more extreme attitudes others may have expressed in this thread. Which... I don't think is fair either.

See it or not, that's the facts. You don't have to paint everyone with the same brush. Many of us who think the iPhone has hidden benefits, aren't willing to disrespect your decision just to express ours. There's a lot to like about the Treo.

Personally I was very interested in the type of medical app you were looking for, and I was going to ask you more about it, but it sounds like you'd take it as me trying to convince you about the iPhone, as opposed to a geniune interest in your mobile needs and how you use the technology. That's fine. We don't need to keep talking about it.

Peace,

The person above you is the one.... sorry - it's been a long weekend. I'm ready for the husband to go back to work tomorrow. WHich starts shuffling kids back and forth to the Apple store for Apple Camp. That is me - the dedicated Mac user driving an hour each way to get there by 9am :D

ANYWAY, i be happy to answer any questions you have on medical software/tracking needs. I"Ve been trying for months to get someone to be interested in what additions a "Mom" needs (i'm using healthfile at the moment for the Palm).

If you want to drop me a PM with questions i'll take the time to answer (on my Treo LOL!!! NOT, i don't do mail mobile - unless im' waiting like now to hear how a friends DD is doing in regards to some brain surgery she is facing tomorrow). There is an App forum here for the iPhone too right? If you want to start a thread there I'll pop in....

Really, i'm so NOT confrontational it's not funny. I own a message board myself and sit on my hands a ton, and am really a nice person!

To the other person that said that the only people qualified to answer an iPod vs Treo was someone that had owned both, i beg to differ.... but i'll just stay out from now i'm.

I am genuinely interested in the future of the iPhone. While i won't have one in the foreseeable future - i could see a new iPod with the PDA side under my Christmas Tree.

I think i just get frustrated that i really have evaluated the iPhone and found it not working for my needs. I have multiple friends who it would work great for - they are saving their pennies up!

Again... i'm sorry..... and would love to help make the "next great killer medical tracking app" (or website) :D

Tracey.... who needs a bowl of ice cream she thinks!

Awesome! Thanks... I'm looking over Healthfile right now. It's very interesting. Reminds me of being a shade of "BalanceLog". I was a BIG user of BalanceLog for the Palm from Healthetech (I was using it on my Sony Cle), so I'm personally looking for another solution for that. I went to Healthetech recently and saw that their assets were purchased and they'd closed up shop. Regarding the medical tracker, I hope you don't mind if I tap your brain later on follow up. I need to track that stuff for myself (and my car for that matter), I'm horrible with that stuff!

I don't think i tried Balance Log - i was using PDA HEalthware (???) on my Clie's before the Treo. It crashed often on my NR70 when i went to it, and then was unusable on my Treo.

But it at least tracked height. LOL, if you read the forums there i mention the need for height. It doesn't integrate well though for me. I want to link illnesses to an appointment, at an appointment create a vaccine entry. At an appointment i want to enter ht, wt, BP and all that... not go somewhere else and have to to remember it all. Because i don't remember it all - i'm pretty sure i've enter a vaccine ONCE. And all 3 kids have had them since buying the app!

At the moment (never say never), i don't need to track insulin/glucose levels. But i'd like similar tracking info for HGH levels and shots....

Anyway, if my Dad was still able to write code, i'd have him program me up something. Alas.... he can't, so i have to find what i'm needing out there. That hunt isn't going well. But we techy mom's of "special needs" kids have huge lists of wants/needs! :D

My most favorite gas mileage app was MPG from Catamount. Again, i never got it to work on the Treo, and at the time didn't want to know how bad the mileage was in the suburban!! http://www.catamount.com/PalmApps/MPGPalm.html

Happy reading - i'm almost always around....

I emailed LifeRecord yesterday about a patient side of their software, and got a response already - they are close to releasing a product for "us"!

It will run on "anything" so i'm assuming it's a web based product, so i'll be in line to check that out when i get the email it's ready :D

Tracey..... typing from the Apple Store - gotta love Apple Camp :D

Is that the one I mentioned or a different creature altogether?

I have owned just about every Treo that was on sold - starting with the original Treo 300 (which I still have and occasionally use). My last Treo was the 700P. My current phone is a Moto Q but hope to get an iPhone in September. IMO what makes the iPhone special is that it is the first smartphone that lets you look at regular websites and read them easily. I frequent many during message boards and have never been able to read and post easily using any Treo or even my Q. But it is a breeze with the iPhone. To me that makes the iPhone superior to every other smartphone on the market. Sure it might not have availability of all the software that you can get on a Treo but over time I've found I never really needed or used most of that junk anyway. As long as 1) it works as a phone, 2) I can read my email and text messages, 3) I can access the web and 4) I can listen to music and watch videos; it does everything I need it to do. The iPhone does all of these things better than any other smartphone I've owned included both Palm and WM based phones.

Is that the one I mentioned or a different creature altogether?

Yes, the cool one for the doctors (because Like i could ever get the hospital to give me the echocardigram DD had done :D).

I figured it didn't hurt to ask for a patient product - like what i need - so I sent the email to the support addy (the only one i could find), linked them to this thread, and got a response in at 2:30am on Sunday that they are "very VERY close" to releasing a consumer product.

It was nice to hear back so soon - i've been asking for Height on HealthFile and don't even get a "we'll add it to the list" but just get ignored.

The programmer that responded to me has a special needs child - so it's nice to hear that he thinks it will work great.

SO thank you - while that link you posted won't work for me without going back to school, the company may come thru for me!

Tracey... home from the Apple store with a child that envisions herself the next Speilberg :D

Pocket Tunes on Treo is awesome, and even supports streaming and AAC plus -- iPhone cannot do this today! :( See:
http://www.pocket-tunes.com/

Core Player:
http://www.coreplayer.com/

and Kinoma Player:
http://www.kinoma.com/

do WAY more than iPhone does today for multimedia support:

Opera Mini 4 is very Safari-like and very good (watch the video):
http://www.operamini.com/beta/

and Chattermail currently blows away the iPhone on push/push-like email support:
http://www.palm.com/us/chatteremail/

iPhone is definitely a 1.0, and there is no third party apps except for web apps :( Palm OS Treos definitely have more flexibility today, including 3G EV-DO...

IMO, they aren't targeted at the same markets. The iPhone is an iPod, does the Treo have any decent music functionality? I mean I think they are just different.
