Got the X today. I really want to love this phone but coming from a 7+, the screen is too narrow for me. Screen is beautiful, the Face ID has worked awesome every time, and the lack of a home button is kind of nice once you get use to it.

My wife also has an X on order that is due the first week of December. After about 5 minutes on mine she said to cancel her order. We both love the screen size of the plus. Real deal breaker for us. I am taking mine back this Saturday. The only decision now is do I keep my 7+ or IUP for the 8+ which isn’t much different.

If you are going from a 6 or 7 or even older, I think you will love the X. If you have a plus and do not like the size of the plus, you will love the X. If you have a plus and love the screen size, don’t even try the X. I am so disappointed and I know this is my own fault. I didn’t research it good enough ahead of time. I knew it was taller but narrower before I ordered. I wanted the new toy so bad and really wanted to love it but the screen size makes me sad. Oh well. I don’t think I am the only one in this boat returning the X.
Went through the same thing the first few days coming from a 7+ It was annoying feeling cramped for room on the screen and with keyboard, but honestly at this point î don’t even think about it anymore. The first few days were like "the jury is still out on whether or not I’m going to this" and now im loving it and am definetly keeping it. YMMV but give it some time.

anyone having problems with faceID unlocking your phone? i will get the unlock icon...the faceID graphic that says i'm verified, and then when i swipe up, it will only go up a short bit and not unlock. and faceID will say i'm verified...continues over and over. i will have to turn off the phone or sometimes restart the phone for it to work again.

here's a poorly lit video about it:
Your phone is wack. Return it immediately.

What on earth are you going on about? You bring up the task switcher, which in my opinion is one the best features about this phone. So fluid and responsive and intuitive. Way faster than double clicking the home button which was always annoying to me. You hold your fingertip on an app for a less than a second and then flick up to close it. Then you can rapidly flick up on the rest in a few seconds. Love the task switcher and can’t imagine going back to the old way.

The iPhone X is certainly not perfect, but some of the complaints in this thread are just plain silly. But I guess that’s to be expected in a complaints thread.

flicking up is fine. It's the holding down to swipe away that makes no sense.

Agreed. Once you get to the apps by flicking up and pausing, you should be able to force kill by swiping the apps up (the way you can with all other iPhones). I don't understand why Apple added the extra step for the X.

I've completely disabled FaceID.

Reallly hate how difficult it is to use without a case, it’s almost a design flaw how slippery it is. Size can’t be blamed as many other bigger phones are not like this. Hate using cases but have to on this one.

I can’t see why Apple made it so difficult to use without a case, maybe on purpose to sell more cases?

Don’t like closing apps too. Seems like so much hassle now lol. Would rather swipe up or something

Battery life doesn’t seem great it’s been few days only but either my usage is too heavy or it’s just not great. My 6 lasted just about day or less had to charge again sometimes in afternoon evening depends on use

X is but better lasts a day but wouldn’t last another I don’t think. So topping up charge after day anyway.

Well, I'm pushing 2 weeks with the iPhone X. All of my issues I've discussed in this thread are still prevalent. I've decided to keep the phone, but reluctantly. I do like not having a home button and I like the speed of the device. And basically, for these latter two reasons alone I'm keeping the phone.

Other than that, I cannot recommend this phone to anyone unless they want the same as me: no home button and speed.

The iPhone X is overpriced and flawed. For starters, the notch is terrible and as discussed, creates an array of usability issues. The absurdly rounded corners of the phone coupled with the notch creates dead zones on the bottom and top of the device: THE BEZELS ARE IN THE SOFTWARE.

From the camera bump always getting in the way, to the tall narrow screen, to the blue tint of the screen on tilt, to the crap brightness of the screen in daylight, to how much the phone heats up at times, to the gimmick that is Animojis and Augmented Reality, to the insanely high price that this phone is, and much more... it's flawed.

I just posted another thread "Flakegate". If what I referenced is true, I think I might pray for Apple, because if it's really easy to make the finish of the Space Grey flake like what I referenced in another thread, people will be out for blood because of how expensive this phone is. It seems like a delicate piece of jewellery, and not something that is going to last long.

Despite ordering my iPhone X within seconds of the site/app being available for me (8:08am on release day) I have just received mine on Wednesday. After having used it for only a few hours that day (mostly while it was completing iCloud restore) as an upgrade from my release day iPhone 5 (survived 5 years without a case) it was a welcome upgrade. Even before receiving the X, I was still contemplating cancelling the order and just getting an 8 Plus as the idea of the notch and bad/no software to manage it properly was not appealing.

Well, a few days in now, I am actually quite enjoying it, unexpectedly. I have a 6S for work, and I have used the wife’s iPhone 8 so it shouldn’t have been much of an adjustment and the gestures have not really been awful to get used to, and (even though I have small hands) I do not have much of an issue with one-handed usage. The control centre gesture is not great and I do agree with most, if not all, of your gripes however I am not sure I feel strongly enough about them to return it (although it is early days), I have 9 days left to return it though so we shall see.

It is amazingly overpriced with a ridiculous cost for a phone that is frankly shocking to fix; other than cost saving, having watched quite a few tear-downs, there seems to be almost no excuse for Apple not having made the rear-glass of both X/8 replaceable a’la iPhone 4S, other than possibly needing the additional bonding for rigidity and a little cost saving.

Frankly, what almost has hacked me off more is that I wanted to get the X on the Upgrade programme but it was impossible to book a store appointment online with the ordering process, not available, despite trying at 6am every day since the pre-ordering. Bah!

Face ID is merely about unlocking the phone. How the phone unlocks is a tiny part of the whole experience of owning an iPhone, especially as it's takes about two seconds. If I have a hotel room, do I really care that much about how the door unlocks? Would I choose a hotel room based upon how the door unlocks? I care only about the room itself. Why is there such an emphasis on unlocking? Unlocking like a non-issue to me.

Fair enough but for many people the unlock is an action that is performed most on the phone so hence something you don’t want fouling up the process. Face ID has been working well for me but many situations it doesn’t work:
When phone is not portrait orientation, you have to have the phone the same orientation as your face especially if it is not pointing directly at you.
It does work at different angles but with certain types of light above you it will not work sitting on a table, you have to lift and angle towards your face.
In the car when on the centre console being used for gps, if GPS app crashes the phone will time-out and lock and is not easy to unlock to continue non-interactive usage as you have to either stop and type the code in or stop and pick it up to Face ID , or you have to arrange the phone so it is always pointing at your face in portrait mode which is not as good for GPS usage.

Terrible analogy. People unlock and check their phone 50+ times a day. How many times a day do you unlock a hotel door? 2? 3? Ok 5?

2 seconds, 50 times a day is TEN HOURS per year. In 2 years, that’s almost an entire day, staring at a phone with a blank screen. How many HOURS I can shave off of the time I spend staring idly at a blank slab of glass is VERY important to me.

I don’t like the weight of the phone, it’s a bit heavy side for me(upgrading from the SE though). And it is still a bit too big for me... would have preferred the 6’s size

My perfect phone would be bezeless(with the notch) SE. It will never happen though

My perfect size would be a bezeless with the notch 6/7/8.

For me even going from a 6 to the X it’s still too big especially when I put it in an Otterbox Symmetry case. I did notice the weight which made it top heavy on my pinky shelf causing pinky fatigue.

I agree with both of you, with a case on the X is slightly too large for my hand and I have the smallest case possible.

I want to like the X returned it about a week ago. Was at the mall and decided to go in the Apple store to try out the X again. My criteria is has to work for me in a case like the Otterbox Symmetry. Apple doesn’t have the Symmetry but a similar case the Statement. So I tried it on with that with some help from a rep who unhooked a demo for me.

I can say I would like the X if gestures were in a convenient place. I use reachability a lot and since it’s access is near the bottom edge it’s hard to activate with a case on it. It’s like you have to ‘dig’. Also if control center and notifications were accessible lower it would be more convenient.

I think the most convenient place would be above the app drawer. My thumb is right there and I don’t need to get to the top of the screen.

This can happen with a software update but I doubt it will happen.

I have a 6S for work and X for personal now and the most infuriating thing is different gestures on the same OS for NO damned reason. Apple really need to sort that s**t out. I actually like the X far more than I thought I would but there are things that taint the experience. I know Apple love giving features on the newest phone to make you upgrade but there really is no other reason why they are not waterfalled to the older models.

Sure I get that. But the baseline is Touch ID. The difference in time consumption between Touch ID and Face ID is minimal. It seems seems like an awful lot of fuss just about unlocking.

Good comments everyone.

So I'm going on 1 month with the iPhone X. Everything I posted are still issues for me. Yes, I decided to keep the phone. But again, for only two reason:

  • It's very fast.
  • No home button.
Other than these two things, I don't really like anything about the iPhone X and cannot recommend it to anyone, particularly given it's ridiculous price.

  • The aspect ratio of the screen is just weird coming from a Plus, and I'm not getting used to it: too tall and skinny.
  • The camera bump on the back is annoying as hell: because the camera is vertical and not horizontal, it's in the way a lot more (e.g., runs into the sleep/wake button).
  • The disgusting, god awful, good for nothing... notch. Terrible. Hate it. When I look at the iPhone X with the thick black border and that stupid notch, the device already looks dated. The notch is always there, and in the way sometimes (e.g., covers cropped images... no solution).
  • Apple rips off Palm/HP with the home bar. I recently took receipt of a HP Veer. A tiny smartphone from 2011 running WebOS. It has the exact same home bar on the bottom like the iPhone X. No question: Apple copied these guys straight up. And in 2017, it's in the bloody way. Try going into YouTube in landscape mode and scrub the video... you'll see how it's almost impossible to consistently and reliably do it because the X/iOS thinks you want to switch Apps.
  • FaceID kinda sucks sometimes. I turned it off completely now. Require password after 1 hour. I don't bother with ApplePay on the iPhone, just use my Apple Watch.
  • The OLED screen. I don't like it as much as the LCD Retina. It is not bright enough in daylight. I know that the next version of the X will have a brighter screen, and Apple will play this up. Also, everything seems a little more artifical looking than the LCD Retina. Also, the blue tint on tilt is annoying.
  • Battery life is just ok.
  • Control Centre gesture: it sucks. No other way of saying it.
  • The bezels are in the software. Using an X, you'll understand what that means. Sharp rounded corners and the dead zones on the forehead and chin create lots of wasted pixel zones in Apps.
After really using this thing, I can't believe the cookie cutter reviews from all the Blogger nerds about the iPhone X and how they were loving it. Nilay over at the Verge had a fairly reasoned review, but he's an Apple fanboy.

If you read this thread, this shows the real users and their struggles. The iPhone X is very far from perfect, and in many ways, is quite a flawed device particularly in the context that Apple has had 10 years of making the iPhone and has thousands of engineers and billions of dollars behind it.
