Holy crap man. Right here is a screen shot from Apple.com:

Again, you were misinformed and incorrect. The iPhone X Space Gray has PVD Coated bands. Scroll down on page to view description.

Surgical‑grade stainless steel.
The stainless steel band that wraps around and reinforces iPhone X is a special Apple-designed alloy that’s both durable and more pure, and it polishes beautifully. For the space gray finish, we use a process called physical vapor deposition to precisely match the color of the stainless steel band to that of the glass.

Good posts. You are wasting your time replying.

Believe the OP is hopeless in understanding this.

You are very clearly correct.

Believe that posters like you are hopeless in understanding this thread.

It appears you're not taking time to read all the posts in this thread then, because This comment has nothing to do in relation to what the OP was commenting on. If You read back the last 10 posts, Another member was making false assertions based on the PVD coating they were msinformed from an Apple representative, which was corrected and yet that member was still arguing the point that they were correct, when they were not.

I guess time will tell with more data and information whether this is a real problem or not, but this person's Space Grey iPhone X's surface is terribly flaked. If it's true, and if the surface is easily flaked, it reminds me of the early Titanium PowerBooks that flaked bad.

I can tell you this. After spending so much money on this phone, people will not be happy if this becomes widespread.

Now, does anyone want to partner on an iPhone X refinishing business?

My iPhone X is also flaking bad. Not using any case and never dropped. This is with around 30 days of normal usage. Received around Thanksgiving, it is now 12/30/17. I have owned ever iteration of iPhone since the 2G and this is probably the biggest quality issue that I have seen

Wow that iPhone X looks really flaky.
That’s not normal.

Take that back for a replacement and I am certain apple will give you a new one.

That should not be happening in such short period of time, case or no case. Saying that I’m glad I’m using a case, I would be sick if I saw that happening to my £1150 phone.

This is maybe only the second case I have observed this actually happening from reading on here. It could be an issue with the physical Vapor deposition coating process, which may not have cured properly, thus resulting in the flaking. Apple would likely replace that being it's a defect, but undoubtedly they will want your iPhone to pass along to their engineer team to find out what is causing the issue.

Since you didn’t answer in the other thread you posted this in... isn’t it true that your ring rubs the phone right in that spot? Seems likely based on what you said in the other thread.

It's why I preferred silver X again. Silver also looks nice from a distance while the space gray could fool for any other Android phone if the displays were off. I could care less looking at the rear side of phones. Only with girls. ;)

Nowt to do with the post, but, as an iPhone 7P user, man, that first picture has me drooling. I've not really seen many pictures like that of the X (ain't been in an Apple store to drool over it either) so I have to admit, she sure does look purdy...

Right, I have no doubt that Apple will replace it, but it is a huge inconvenience to go in and trade in the phone.. then try to remember every single password to every email and app that I have (a lot!).

The flaking or rubbing off the coating only seem to happen in the right condition.. I did not physically see any residual coating deposit nor was I able to run my finger nails back and forth to get it to come off. These phones are produced in batches so I can only imagine there are thousands out there behaving the same way.

I'm having the same issue. I put a Spigen case on it the day after it arrived (Dec 5th). I just took the case off, to pop the SIM card out, and both sides look like its been worn out! There are zero signs of the flaked paint anywhere. It's definitely a bad batch of paint or something. Heading to Apple Store tomorrow to see what they'll do... Hell, the phone is not even 1-month old!

I called this from a mile away - the main thing I was looking forward to about the X's design was the ability to re-polish the SS like you can do with the Apple Watch.

I use my phone without any cases or screen protectors and have already polished it once. The band returns to 100% out of the box fresh on the silver X. Honestly, if I had an SG one that was flaking I'd just polish it anyways and make the band silver.

I debated myself for weeks on the color, finally I opted for the white iPhone.

Please update us on what Apple says! I have not gone in yet.. curious on the cause.. Thanks!

My Space Grey is flaking even though it's been in a case since Nov. 3. iPhone 5 Black Slate issue all over again.

https://www.cultofmac.com/192781/ap...chips-scratches-on-black-iphone-5-are-normal/

It seems to be a totally different issue. The flaking seems to be caused by a faulty finish - if its happening with a case, its clearly a manufacturing fault.

Schiller's comments are relating to damage through wear and tear which are going to happen when you have anodised aluminium and don't put it in a case.

Huh? You don't store all of your passwords in the iCloud keychain so all of your passwords are saved across all of your Apple devices and backed up in the cloud?

The only thing that you lose is the contents of the secure enclave - have to re-setup Face ID/Touch ID and re-add your cards to Apple Pay.

I’m going to Apple store to replace my SG X as well. Mine is flaking bad as wel and at times appears I have glitter in my hand from the paint flaking off. I called Apple directly but they wanted to send me a new phone, put a hold for entire amount of phone on CC and then I had to pay $29 for warranty as well. I said no. It’s a defect so I shouldn’t have to pay anything and I understood the hold on the CC which I was fine with. I’ll update once I get into Apple store since one in Omaha is booked the whole week out as of today 1/5/2018

I walked in to Apple Store recently and I looked at all the space grey demo phones, the areas below the phone where the charge point is, it is all flaked and exposing chrome.
