And then have a shattered back or screen. People need to take their phone out of their case once and week and wipe it down.

I use cases but take it out of the case once a week and wipe it down with a micro fiber cloth.

I do have a way of not having a broken screen or back. I don’t drop my phone. I know that seems like a strange concept, but it has worked well for me over the last 10 years of owning iPhones.

Ah yes. the usual argument for using a case.

I am the fly in your reasoning.

Over two years with my iPhone 6s+ without a case. It looks the same as when I bought it. It's all about being careful what you do with your phone.

Right. And, when the phone hits the concrete when it's accidentally dropped, it has no protection whatsoever.
I have yet to break my phone (6s+).

Ove two years, no case.

OP, You are not alone with this problem.
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/iphonex-surgical-steel-durability.2094254/

Everybody can convince me that steel is not resistant to scratches, but this mix of metals that Apple has used on his Xphones is terribly bad for external factors. For a phone for $ 1000 it simply becomes a shame for Apple Inc !
Anyone who tried to convince you that steel cannot be scratched is wrong. Steel has a Mohs hardness of 4 - 4.5, so not very hard to resist scratching.

I always get original Apple cases for my iOS devices. Sure they are expensive but they go on expensive phones. Also, they tend to look the best.

This year I’m going for silicone. Although both silicone and leather should offer similar protection, silicone has microfiber insides on both the back and sides, while the leather has just on the back (sides have direct contact with leather). I watched a video from DetroitBorg where he thinks silicone offers slightly better protection. I’m sure both options are good. Again, I think Apple cases are the way to go.

I think silicone will also more protection a bit too for that reason. The silicon wraps to the sides too, on leather the clothes interior and thicker back is only on the back, the sides are thin and lacking that

Plus it has more grip. All Leather can be slippery

If the purpose of the case is to protect against screen breakage or other drop damage that would reduce functionality and you don’t care so much about scratches than hard shell cases are fine. If the purpose is to keep the phone in decent cosmetic condition than I’ve found soft cases with microfiber interiors, TPU or leather are best.

I like my Apple leather case. The only problem is that it’s so nice that I kinda don’t want the case to be damaged either ($49!) but oh well.

No one chooses to drop their phone. I'm really careful with my phones too. But accents happen. People bump into you, slips or whatever.

I like the leather Apple case but fear the exposed bottom will get damaged.
I’m not on an X, but my iPhone 5/6/7plus all have never scratched from the leather case opening on the bottom.

I worry more when I try and miss plugging in the lightning cable lol.

We share the same OCD. The wireless charging has been very convenient.

It's a tool and it's normal wear and tear, including from necessary protection, shouldn't be a concern.

Now, for my real thoughts: I'm anal and would hate that! It's not as much of a deal on the X, but I choose silver devices despite preferring the appearance of black bezels over the white bezels (8+) for this reason, and the stainless silver band of the X would likely polish out.

Has anyone considered coating their metal parts that make contact with plastic case in a couple coats of clear nail polish? I used this on the back of my Fitbit Force (?) when there were metal allergy problems. Makes a nice barrier, doesn't show, wears well, and can be removed. Don't know how it would hold up to the running of say an Otter Box Defender.

Not trying to dis your idea, but there's a good chance the OB case is fitted tight enough that it would just scrape the nail polish off. :(

I've had a leather case on my Jet Black iPhone 7 for 14 months and the sides are as undamaged as the back. I think a lot of the reason the Apple cases work so well is that they really =fit right=. They're not so tight that they scrape the phone, and not so loose that dirt and crud get into the case and scratch the phone. The Apple cases are (my opinion) clearly worth their extra cost, as long as they fit in your use profile. If I were working on construction sites, I'd need something different, but then I'd probably have different expectations about what my tools looked like.

Just cautious since only
Drop to 7+ on cement destroyed my saddle brown (looked chewed off on the lip) and the screen shattered. But was also Face first without any tempered glass

10 years and no drops. I don’t know what to tell you.

You are telling us that you are exceptional, and that's literally the truth. Normal people do drop things. Some normal people drop things a lot. Accidents happen. It's not a question of moral or physical virtue, nor a question of skill.

I use a leather pouch for going out but otherwise naked to enjoy the design and feel of this gorgeous phone. It just feels so damn good without a case. On balance I’m prepared to take the risk as the pleasure of using the phone naked outweighs the fear of damaging it. I have the silver X and have found it to be very sturdy. Polished metal scratches - fact of life. At least with the silver phone it’s very easy to remove micro abrasions if you wish. Not a benefit enjoyed by the SG version.

Ouch! :( Totally agree, the Apple cases, especially the leather ones, are not for phones that are going sidewalk-surfing. ;)

Or he is just careful. I agree accidents happen, but a lot of people have this "it MUST happen" attitude. No, it really doesn't.

While travelling abroad this past week, I took off my Otterbox Defender case to pop in a new sim card and discovered a series of blemishes on my phone. It has since gotten significantly worse as shown in the photos. My guess is the inner hard plastic chassis of the otter box repeatedly rubbed the phone until the finish came off. The PVD finish on the iPhone X is not abrasion resistant

Yep the Otterbox Defender put a permanent mark in my screen where the sensor is on my iPhone 7. And I always take it out of the case once a week to clean it up.

I’m glad someone else gets this. Yes accidents happen that you can’t prevent, but to the ones that are constantly dropping their phones. That’s just carelessness.

I had my X in an Apple silicone case. Initially I liked the look, but recently I decided to go naked. The naked phone offers far more grip in the hand, but far less grip on surfaces. Because it’s so heavy, it’s its on a surface that isn’t 100% horizontal, it slowly slides off. So I have to be careful.

At home I have a mixture of carpeted and wood floors. Outside, the phone is almost always in a zipped jacket pocket. This is where the Apple Watch comes into its own.
