I like the leather Apple case but fear the exposed bottom will get damaged.

Just to inspect, I took my phone out of the Apple leather case, and the edges look like they are in perfect condition. Highly recommend. When I put my phone in my tight jeans pocket, I make sure to keep the notch down and phone facing outwards (not towards my thigh) so that it reduces any chance of abrasion... as worked well for me so far. I also kept the plastic that came with the phone so the little tab that curls around the connector port helps protect the bottom to some degree.

Another reason why no one should ever use a case. Go Naked!!!!!

Hmmm.

I've always used LifeProof's Fré cases on my iPhones. Even after two years of being in there, there's no damage at all and no marks from where the case has been. They are dustproof though; so no debris gets in that can cause damage / scratches / abrasion.

That stinks. But unfortunatley I've seen too many cases cause more damage than if you had just gone case-less.

I lost “drop lottery” lol

Never not going glass tempered again tho

It saved my 6+

The plastic film protectors totally spoil the user experience IMHO, and the screen is too soft and too fragile to go bare, I agree. My only real drop experience was a miracle. I dropped a 5 with no case on a brick sidewalk on a hill. It skated six feet down the hill before friction asserted itself. Unbelievably there was only one small nick on the beveled edge of the case band. I have no idea how I got that lucky.

Or he is just careful. I agree accidents happen, but a lot of people have this "it MUST happen" attitude. No, it really doesn't.

Fair enough, but it does for me. :(

Just cautious since only
Drop to 7+ on cement destroyed my saddle brown (looked chewed off on the lip) and the screen shattered. But was also Face first without any tempered glass

Big phone, face down, nothing on the display...ouch. :(

If the purpose of the case is to protect against screen breakage or other drop damage that would reduce functionality and you don’t care so much about scratches than hard shell cases are fine. If the purpose is to keep the phone in decent cosmetic condition than I’ve found soft cases with microfiber interiors, TPU or leather are best.

I like my Apple leather case. The only problem is that it’s so nice that I kinda don’t want the case to be damaged either ($49!) but oh well.

I’m protective of my leather case too, but to be honest they hold nicely even after a drop. I’ve had Apple’s leather case with the 6S and dropped it once, it was a bummer at the time but then the broken leather continued to age with the rest of the case so it wasn’t that bad at all. Leather is a very dynamic material.

I like the leather Apple case but fear the exposed bottom will get damaged.
I’ve used Apple cases with the 6 and 7 iPhones, and the exposed bottom has never been an issue. It’s such a small opening relative to the rest of the sides that are covered, and since the corners are adequately protected, there’s really minimal chance the exposed area will get damaged. Plus since openings would be necessary for the speaker, mic, and lightning port, those cut outs could get easily ripped or torn off, so one big opening is actually better, IMO.

One additional benefit now with the iPhone X is that the opening at the bottom helps differentiate which end of the phone is the bottom since the home button no longer points it out, and that’s a big help to ensure you hold the phone right-side-up so that FaceID scans properly the first time.

I also bought the Otterbox Symmetry on a whim (only Apple case available was the 100 bucks leather fold...hard pass) and putting it on was horrible, i thought i was going to break it! From what i've heard, this is a common problem with Otterbox cases, so i'll probably return mine and get a new one.

Can anybody recommend a similar case that won't scratch the phone? I considered the spigen ultra hybrid, as it's been wonderful on my 6, but people were also reporting scratching on the sides. I like Apple's silicone case, but i'm afraid of that open bottom.

IMO, something that worked for previous iPhones won't necessarily work on the X simply because we're talking about completely different materials. The steel on the iPhone 6 or 7 is less prone to scratches, you'd need to hit it pretty hard to leave a dent, while the iPhone X gets hairline scratches simply by looking at it.

As mentioned the apple ones (silicone and leather) will be best bc good fit, and the soft material inside.

That means you take the risk either way without a case, which if it's dropped, now you have bigger problems if the glass or display is cracked versus just scratching the bands.

Thanks for the warning!

I just took my X out of my Otterbox Defender. It’s been in there without a break for about a week, since I keep to a weekly cleaning schedule since discovering my UAG rubbery case left some sort marks of chemical interaction on my 7 Plus.

No scratches to be found at all. :) But I keep the phone on the belt clip holder or in a very clean pocket in my purse. There was no debris or grit inside of the case this time. The last time, with my old screen protector, there was a bit of debris because that protector had a cutout for the notch and it was not edge to edge. Stuff accumulated everywhere the screen protector left the glass open. The new screen protector covers edge to edge and has only one cutout for the speaker and that’s it. It’s been a good combo for me. But like @nia820 says, there’s no substitute for regular cleaning. Having seen what happened to your iPhone, I’ll be sure to stick to my cleaning regimen.

I need the protection the Otterbox Defender offers because of my tall rambunctious dog and I’m around kids and always getting jostled and bumped into. I can’t tell you all how many times the dog or one of the kids has collided with me while I was using my phone and nearly sent it flying out of my hand. It’s all actually gotten worse now that all the kids are teenagers and are actually around me more, mooching food and asking me endless questions as if I were an AI Assistant called “Hey, Mom.”

Also, being both nearsighted, but now also farsighted from age, the hand eye coordination ain’t what it used to be. It’s not so much that I’ve become that much clumsier on my own, but anyone who has had to adjust to wearing progressive lenses or bifocals can probably sympathize.

I have never in my life seen a coating that didn’t eventually become worn off somehow.

I don’t know why anyone is surprised.

When I get an X, I’ll probably gouge a corner with a nail just to spite the MacRumors forum whinefest.

When the shiny chrome metal band on my 3GS started to show scratches, I used a steel wool cloth on it, giving it a nice nickel finish look. Not saying I would do that with my X. I would be curious what it would look like.

People need to take their phone out of their case once and week and wipe it down.

The only potential issue with that is that the edges of the case may inadvertently scratch the stainless steel you are trying to protect. Even the Apple leather/silicone cases, their edges are soft but if there is micro grit in there when you prise it off, scratches!

While travelling abroad this past week, I took off my Otterbox Defender case to pop in a new sim card and discovered a series of blemishes on my phone. It has since gotten significantly worse as shown in the photos. My guess is the inner hard plastic chassis of the otter box repeatedly rubbed the phone until the finish came off. The PVD finish on the iPhone X is not abrasion resistant

Exactly why I changed my mind to the stainless steel.

At least nothing can flake off. And scratches won’t be so visible

Veil XT. Been great so far.
[doublepost=1513460960][/doublepost]

Yup same one. I’m pretty careful so I haven’t had any issues.

I highly recommend the Sheath. It’s basically the Veil XT with 6 ft drop protection. Yes it’s slightly more bulky than the Veil but if you’re interested in any type of drop protection in a slim case it is definitely the one.
