My iPhone X is also flaking bad. Not using any case and never dropped. This is with around 30 days of normal usage. Received around Thanksgiving, it is now 12/30/17. I have owned ever iteration of iPhone since the 2G and this is probably the biggest quality issue that I have seen

That’s horrifying terrible!

Can the coating not withstand oils on fingers?

That looks terrible. Serious question, does Apple manufacturer warranty or Apple Care cover flaking to that extend?

I hold the phone with my left hand, so the part that is flaking have the most contact with my palm right below index finger..

I’m surprise this is not all over the news or internet! I couldn’t even find a video on YouTube regarding this.

That's pretty insane wear in that one particular spot. I'd suggest you take it into the Apple store - pretty sure they'd replace it, as that's not "normal wear" at all.

You say "flaking" - are chunks of the PVD material actually coming off of the frame???

Mine's still flawless, but I'm using it naked. It's pretty apparent that the coating won't stand up to particulates inside a case grinding the coating away.

Take it to the Apple Store ASAP! If that happened to mine i'd surely have a heart attack, not before demanding a new unit, in white. Be polite, but firm, and i'm sure they'll replace it in no time- that's not normal wear at all!

I'm beginning to regret getting mine in Space Grey, but the store didn't accept exchanges aside from technical failures. Let's hope Apple addresses the issue and owns up for their mistakes- this phone was as expensive as my MBP! Let's only hope it lasts as long...

My SG chipped from that stupid button on the right side of my jeans. I change it for the silver one.

Wow that is terrible! I bought my wife a Space Grey while in line for my silver one, but she had me return it - I almost kept her space grey and returned the Silver. Not regretting that now.

Ouch that is a shame when you were hoping a case protects it.

I have been using mobile phones since the late eighties. Only twice felt the need for a case.

Once for the iPhone 3G as if developed hairline cracks and looked rubbish after a while. And the second time with the iPhone 6+ as it was so slippery. Funnily enough that was the only phone I ever dropped and cracked the screen.

I remain naked in my use now. The X is not slippery, it will be ok.

That's because it's not an epidemic of a problem for it to make the media just because of an iPhone flaking. What you have is a defective iPhone, but that doesn't mean for the millions of iPhones that are produced and sold, that an unknown amount of flaking iPhones should make headline news across the world. The throttling issue would be more of an example that affected a large swath of iPhone users that did make the media and headlines.

From all these discussions about space gray flaking issue/ flake gate, it is very apparent that the stunning splendid eye catching attention getter silver is the best and wisest color to choose. Fortunate for those including me who choose the best iPhone X color in the history.

Silver is too metro sexual for me.

I picked this one up cheap, Very first Otterbox case I bought..not a huge bulky thing. I liked how it's clear and you can see the entire phone. BUT I hated how I felt like I was forcing this into the case. One thing I do fear is scratching - in your case pealing on my space gray. It's back in it's box and I'll just stick with my Apple Silicone case. I like the soft inside, never had scratching issues on previous phones.

I got the same case for mine. I too hate the feel that you're forcing the phone into it. But I am so glad i did. I have jusy returned from a 3wk holiday in Sri Lanka and i went to take some pics of the kids playing in the pool. I somehow managed to drop my X on to the concrete tiles around the pool. Fortunately this case saved my phone. Not a mark on it.

I've gone back to the Apple leather case now I am back home. But when out and about with work then i will use this case.
