After one day of light use (only carrying in my normal Burberry jeans) and using it on my couch it looks kind of messy.

I know the SG model has a coating around the stainless steel band, can anyone confirm/deny if it scratches like the silver does (similar to iTroph photos)?

This I think is the biggest drawback with the Stainless Steel. I personally think the Silver version looks best out of the box but question the durability long term. I would be curious if anyone else had similar issues after just a day or so of use? Are the SG users experiencing similar?

No case for me, the phone is too beautiful to put a cover on it. If it gets some scratch on the SS frame, whatever. My SS Apple Watch’s got quite a few scratches over the past 2.5 years and still looks good
Also, I’ll hand the iPhone back to Apple in about 10 months...

basically off-topic but..

a S.Jobs blurb:

July 2004: Mortality must have been on his mind when I saw him again in Cupertino the next summer for a Newsweek interview. When I pulled out my iPod—I was using it as a recording device—he was horrified to see that it was covered by a plastic case, something that he considered an abomination. He urged me to discard it. “I think the stainless steel looks beautiful when it wears,” he told me. “Probably it’s like us. I mean, I’m going to be 50 next year, so I’m like a scratched-up iPod myself.”
Exactly. I don’t understand the whole case thing. I never use a case. Ever. I had my 6 plus for over 3 years. No case. Got full value for it on trade in to Verizon. Have a silver X. No case. Why cover up your device?

Yep, the SS will scratch, no question. It also is quite easy to polish on a weekly/monthly basis. I actually don’t mind the microscratches all that much. I had them on my SS watch. I polished it a few times.

Can’t polish it everyday, there’s only so much metal.

Accept the scratches, wear it like character. There’s something liberating about naked phones with normal wear and tear. Think of it as letting go of this silly notion of unrealistic perfection.

Let the next owner choose if they want to polish. This is how it’s done in the Watch world.

Here we go...the craziness!

Guys read the posts, of you’re someone saying I don’t want a case, blah blah blah and why is my phone scratching, please for the love of god save it.

Stainless steel scratches, plain and simple, hairline scratches will happen with a naked silver iphone, seriously sometimes even with a case, and there’s no getting around it. The Space Gray version will scratch also, it will just be less noticeable and harder to see.

My Watch is roughly 10k and yes it’s polished Stainless Steel on most of the band and over time shows hairline scratches, just like every other polished stainless steel product does. If it bothers you on this phone get a skin like dbrand or go with the iPhone 8 which uses a non shiny mate band around the phone!

Mine went straight from the box into an Otterbox Defender then covered with a Zagg. I do Maintenance and Fire & Rescue so a case is a must have.

What he said is what I am doing and I also have a stainless steel first generation Apple Watch. Scratches gives it character and its own uniqueness

Nakit all the way. I don’t mind if it picks up a few scratches, never have going right back to, well my first ever mobile which was pre-everything we have now. It had about 2 minutes talk time, no text messages in those days and coverage was damn near non-existent :D

But just as with my iPods, iPhones, Watch, I kind of like a bit of character, it tells a story. Nothing too severe of course, but I don’t mind light scratching at all. I don’t spend my time ooohing and ahhhing over it. So long as the screen looks good I’m happy.

Damn, when did I get so easily pleased :p

SS will scratch, it's just how it works.

Does anybody protect their polished SS wristwatch? You just have to live with the scratches, or wear a protective case.

Is anyone going ceaseless? I’m afraid the stainless steel will be as soft as the Apple Watch and start showing scratches within a day or so. Is the stainless steel band a harder version on the phone?
Put your phone in the case or put a band protection. No big deal.

Do you have keys or pebbles in your jeans? :) It's a bit hard to imagine that fabric causes scratches like this after a day.
Nope. I never put anything else then my iPhone in my front right pocket. And it got even worse today. But really, I don’t care. It is how it is and makes my iPhone personal.

Probably a dumb question but I haven't seen anything mentioned anywhere. Is the SS band on the X ok to polish like the SS watch? I know there's a coating on the SG version but concerned if there's anything remotely similar in the silver that polishing would cause discoloration between polished/non polished areas. I believe either in the keynote or product info on Apple there's mention about it being nice to polish, just not sure that mean actually polish or a thorough one over with a microfiber cloth.

Got the case. Went straight from the box to the case but I’m paranoid so I took it out to wipe and polish lols

This is exactly how mine looks after a few days. I keep my phone in my left pocket, upside down with the screen facing my leg. The top is all scratched up. The bottom not at all. It did turn out I had a candy wrapper in my pocket too, so that may have contributed.

The stainless steel should be the least of your worries. That fragile glass should worry you.

It’s the same as an iPod and the 1st gen iPhones...sorry fail by Apple iMO

I have my doubts how the stainless will look after a few months time if it looks like that only after a few days. Maybe the SG is a better option for those who worry about that sort of thing. I think the jury is still out whether or not that coating used on the SG offers any more protection or makes it less prone to these scratches.

So far I haven’t had scratches on my stainless steel band. I always keep it in a front pocket by itself or with just my wallet
