I'm being an insensitive curmudgeon here, but Jesus H Christ on a stick, I can't believe you guys want to use a warranty service for scratched metal.
WTF do you think they should make phones out of? Tungsten carbide? Yeah, that **** won't scratch ever, right?
The only reason I use a case on my phone is to protect it from drop damage. But scratches? GTFO.
Are you going to
use your gadget or not? Name any other metal object in your house that has no scratches (or "micro-abrasions"... what a stupid term). Go ahead. Find it, and post photos to the thread.
WTF again.

And nope, polishing the band without affecting the tiny holes around it is not a good idea. The phone is not meant to be polished.
Dry polish with a rag and it'll be fine.

When the stainless steel Watch (silver version, not space black) was introduced, everyone had the same concerns, but we either lived with the scratches or learned how to polish the steel (avoid the coated screen) using various materials designed for the purpose.
Hell, man, we've been living with metal objects in our pockets and not worried this much about scratches since... I dunno, when was the first pocketwatch invented? Or makeup cases?

Shiny stainless steel is always subject to scratches and dings and blemishes. Where as brushed stainless steel doesn’t have these problems
Ehhhh... well, brushing helps
mask the dings and blemishes, but they're still there. Same with frosted and sandblasted finishes.
A mirror-polished finish is the easiest to maintain, though, since all that needs to be done is to make it shiny again. Brushed and blasted finishes are best done with the same grit of material (if you use a different grit, be prepared to redo the entire case to get a uniform finish).
