I've already gotten a small rough mark on the side as well... you can feel it with your finger. I think it probably is from my titanium ring, because I'm not sure where else it would have come from. The OCD part of me wonders if it was a defect from the factory that I didn't catch, but I guess I'll never know. I'm sure it will be joined soon by many other marks and defects. It gives it character... but oh it's terrible when you first damage it especially when you've just spent this much money on it.

I bought a clear case and went right from the box to the case but would love to have it out, it’s a beautiful phone but that band worries me more that the glass
[doublepost=1511319363][/doublepost]I put my silver x in a case straight from the box and the first time I pulled it out to check there were tons of mini abrasions everywhere. I baby my phone so much that I put it on a towel when I set it anywhere, even with the case on. It’s only been 6 days, in a case with a soft interior... I’m devastated

Oh man, that would piss me off.

I knew going in that the silver band will be this sensitive to micro-scratches so I got the SG X. Been taking it off the case every once in a while to check and it still stays flawless with no scratches whatsoever.

Polish might just be your best solution to get rid of the scratches, but I would be careful not spreading the polish into the holes and glass if I were you.

I initially wanted to use the Apple Leather Case (Cosmos Blue) with my iPhone X 256Gb Silver but then later changed my mind because the bottom was not protected.

I then decided to use a clear case to show off the silver Stainless steel frame of the phone.

Got the Power Support Air Jacket Clear Case. Its amazing. This case will not turn yellowish at all and has self healing feature which gets rid of scratches.

I got Apple Care+ coverage, too for peace of mind.

Nice case! Good luck and let us know how the silver fares after a while.

I wanted to see the SS, but it’s too slippery for me to go caseless. I picked a thin case that is open at the bottom, open for all three buttons on the left, and open for the right side button as well - actually it’s open for an inch, larger than the button. Gives me all the shiny view I need.

I’ve also got AppleCare as a backup.

Is anyone going ceaseless? I’m afraid the stainless steel will be as soft as the Apple Watch and start showing scratches within a day or so. Is the stainless steel band a harder version on the phone?

My stainless x is only 6 days old and went from box to case and already is somehow covered in scratches. I’m pissed but I’ve seen images of the sg one and it looks worse when scratched.

SO far I am loving the Power Support Air Jacket Clear. It is really a must have if you want to show off the shiny silver frames. This clear case will not turn yellow like the other ones in the market.

Once the SG gets scratched you wouldn't want to use it as the nearly black phone will have silver marks

I purchased a $5000 Les Paul ten years ago. I’ve barely played it ever since I noticed faint scratches. I almost never take it out of the case because it’s Alpine White and I’m worried about it turning yellow.

If I do decide to play it I make sure I wear gloves and pick gently and play in a dark room where it’s untouched by sunlight.

Similarly this is how I also treat my iPhone X.

Do you only use it in dark rooms, with gloves on? :)

Got the case. Went straight from the box to the case but I’m paranoid so I took it out to wipe and polish lols

That’s how my Apple Watch is, I call it battle scars haha

Looks nice, I'm curious can you post more photos of your SS Apple Watch to see how the SS handles on it?

Other than dropping the phone itself, the only way you can scratch it is well, deliberately scratching it. Normal handling and cleaning won’t give it micro-scratches like in the silver band.

Not true. I had two space grays and within 3 days - case on too - both had minor markings on the band. At least the SS on the silver can be polished out.

But cases can be the problem if there is rubbing or debris trapped that's causing the PVD coating to scratch. Another member mentioned the same thing when they used an OtterBox case, the plastic was rubbing against the PVD coating and scratched it. That could happen to any phone, not just the space gray.

I’ve had mine since release day, always in a case and there is no minor or heavy scratches on it whatsoever. Whatever you’re doing with yours is scratching it out of normal usage.

And nope, polishing the band without affecting the tiny holes around it is not a good idea. The phone is not meant to be polished.

I hate it when someone like you totally assume my statement is “not true”. Can you at least start your response in a less accusatory way?

That’s going to happen to polished stainless steel. There’s just no avoiding it.

You have two options.

1. Polish the band every once in a while.

2. Brush it and you’ll never have to worry about it again.

You can brush it with scotchbrite. Back and forth in one direction. I haven’t done it the X but I have brushed s couple of my watches that used to be polish. Worked a treat. Just mask of the screen surround.

I got the SG but if the SG had a polished band I’d brush it.

I did your option 2 on my iPhone 3G/3GS with the chrome band that went around the screen. It looked pretty good with the nickel finish. I had the SG and ended up getting rid of it because part of the coating started to come off. Not flaking but a wear mark on the right side. My guess is, the stupid button on the right side of my jeans pocket.

Shiny stainless steel is always subject to scratches and dings and blemishes. Where as brushed stainless steel doesn’t
Have these problems
Even though Apple coats the stainless steel you still need a case to have peace of mind

I'm being an insensitive curmudgeon here, but Jesus H Christ on a stick, I can't believe you guys want to use a warranty service for scratched metal.

WTF do you think they should make phones out of? Tungsten carbide? Yeah, that **** won't scratch ever, right?

The only reason I use a case on my phone is to protect it from drop damage. But scratches? GTFO.

Are you going to use your gadget or not? Name any other metal object in your house that has no scratches (or "micro-abrasions"... what a stupid term). Go ahead. Find it, and post photos to the thread.

WTF again.

Dry polish with a rag and it'll be fine.

When the stainless steel  Watch (silver version, not space black) was introduced, everyone had the same concerns, but we either lived with the scratches or learned how to polish the steel (avoid the coated screen) using various materials designed for the purpose.
Hell, man, we've been living with metal objects in our pockets and not worried this much about scratches since... I dunno, when was the first pocketwatch invented? Or makeup cases?

Ehhhh... well, brushing helps mask the dings and blemishes, but they're still there. Same with frosted and sandblasted finishes.

A mirror-polished finish is the easiest to maintain, though, since all that needs to be done is to make it shiny again. Brushed and blasted finishes are best done with the same grit of material (if you use a different grit, be prepared to redo the entire case to get a uniform finish).
