Is anyone going ceaseless? I’m afraid the stainless steel will be as soft as the Apple Watch and start showing scratches within a day or so. Is the stainless steel band a harder version on the phone?
One of the popular mods back with the original iPhone was to take sandpaper to the stainless steel band, which when done properly would cover the scratches and gave the band a nice matte patina.

Edit: Oops, already mentioned multiple times. But still a nice alternative.

Nope. I never put anything else then my iPhone in my front right pocket. And it got even worse today. But really, I don’t care. It is how it is and makes my iPhone personal.

Interesting how I have not had any scratches yet and I've had mine from day 1. I either have it in a pocket by itself or in a pocket with my wallet. Not sure why mine is clean and yours look like that. It must be the material your pocket is made up of or something.

When the stainless steel  Watch (silver version, not space black) was introduced, everyone had the same concerns, but we either lived with the scratches or learned how to polish the steel (avoid the coated screen) using various materials designed for the purpose.

Seen several SS X's bands look exactly like yours now. On a brand new device after just a few days, no way would I be happy with that. SG all the way

I purchased a $5000 Les Paul ten years ago. I’ve barely played it ever since I noticed faint scratches. I almost never take it out of the case because it’s Alpine White and I’m worried about it turning yellow.

If I do decide to play it I make sure I wear gloves and pick gently and play in a dark room where it’s untouched by sunlight.

Similarly this is how I also treat my iPhone X.

I would just like to point out that the band doesn't scratch due to the metal being soft, it is in fact harder than aluminum, it is due to it being polished and shiny. You probably end up with even more scratches on the aluminum back of previous iPhones you just can't see them because they have a matte finish.

As others have said get some metal polish and you'll be set!

I’ve used a black iPhone 7 Plus from day one on release and that Phone was pristine right up until I picked up my X on Friday. Not a single scratch on the bitten where countless times it was plugged into a charger in my car and lived in cup holder for quite some time with zero issues. I’m a fan of the aluminum and thought it held up quite well over the last few generations of iPhones for me.

That's my point, it did scratch you just couldn't see them with the finish. Same reason the jet black appeared to scratch so much more, same material it's just that the finish let those scratches appear more

Just buff those scratches out with polish and watch them disappear. You can’t do that on the SG

The problem with this is it’s not a very good idea near the ports and speakers?

I’ve used a cape code cloth on my watches before, and I put the gloves on and put tape on any areas where it’s not polished stainless steel.

Doing this with a phone seems crazy and can turn into a very expensive venture if the solution gets in the speakers or on the screen.

I would place a soft, clean, old cotton towel on the table as a work surface. Then place the barely moist polishing cloth on the towel so you can hold the iPhone and rub the edges back and forth on the cloth.

After one day of light use (only carrying in my normal Burberry jeans) and using it on my couch it looks kind of messy.

Usedlook included.

That’s going to happen to polished stainless steel. There’s just no avoiding it.

You have two options.

1. Polish the band every once in a while.

2. Brush it and you’ll never have to worry about it again.

You can brush it with scotchbrite. Back and forth in one direction. I haven’t done it the X but I have brushed s couple of my watches that used to be polish. Worked a treat. Just mask of the screen surround.

I got the SG but if the SG had a polished band I’d brush it.

It will scratch just as easily as the Watch. What I do is go case-less and polish it every once in a while.

Be careful to not ding the phone because a deep scratch will be hard to polish.

How has the SG band been holding up? I am guessing much better than the silver.

I've gone careless with every phone since the original (I upgrade every year). Same is true of my silver X.

I'm also wondering how you scratched your Apple Watch so fast. Are you sure it was the stainless steel Watch? I had my series 0 Apple Watch for 2.5 years and didn't experience scratching on the case.

does a black car or silver car show more scratches?

Is this rhetorical? But the obvious answer would be black, because scratches on a black car tend to be more white when it removes the paint or scuffs, which is in contrast to the black color.

Firstly... Stainless steel scratches very easily, especially polsished SS which is what’s on the silver version.

Even brushed matte SS will show scratches, it’ll just be much less noticeable. Apple likes everything shiny so it’s pretty much why they went with the hey look at me finish for the silver model.

Now the space gray is a whole different ballgame since it’s coated with something which will make it less notable for scratches, looks pretty much like the Apple Watch. To the naked eye you won’t really be able to notice any wear and tear on the space gray unless it’s dropped, or dinged.

As for polished? I doubt the space gray can be polished with anything since it’s dipped in something to make it appear black. As for the silver and untouched band, Yes you can polish it. However and I say this with such caution, cape cod is a very dangerous product to use on an electric device. The stuff is no joke and the chemical is harsh. I have used it on my watches in the past for hairline scratches, and when I use it I have rubber gloves on and need to carefully place tape on the parts I do not want polished. This is on a watch, which may be a lot more expensive than a phone, but isn’t electronic and I only use it on the band, not the watch face or even really near it.

With the phone if you get that stuff on the screen or inside the speakers on the bottom where most of the scratches will happen, you are asking for some serious problems because that stuff will destroy your phone and I doubt using something like cape cod is under Warrenty.
its pretty easy to tape off the parts of the phone closest to what your working on. Then wash the phone after since its waterproof(for the most part).
[doublepost=1510141203][/doublepost]Im going cashless as I have for 7 years or so now. 3 days in and nothing wrong with my silver X. I dont see this phone being a problem at all for me.
My 3g was scratched all over on the shiny band from using a case. Over time of taking it off and there was always stuff in the case causing it.

I have a case on my phone, so there's really less need to worry about the SS band.

I use Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish for stainless steel that’s been highly polished. Amazing stuff...

With that being said, I have a glass screen protector on front and ordered one for the back of the phone. My main worry is all this glass. I remember picking up the iPhone 4 and looking at the back...

I've always been an advocate for naked iPhones but this one for some reason has me worried. I have AppleCare+ so if something should happen I can get it fixed and I'm not too worried about scratches. Am I wrong to think AppleCare+ is a good alternative to a case?

What's the point of choosing the Silver phone for it's "shiny" stainless steel band, and then covering it up with a case?
That model brings back bad memories of my 3GS with it's scratch-adorned band.
No thanks! That's the main reason why I ordered the space-gray X.

From what I've heard (and by that I mean YT), the SG shows scratches more easily, as the steel has a color layer (similar to iPhone 5 black). Not sure, in fact, I'm still thinking which to choose myself - but it could be that SG shows scratches more.

I just don’t think so. With the 5 those phones looked painted.

With the X it looks like the band is baked and than polished. Honestly I don’t see how someone who takes care of their phone will even scratch the space gray phone.
