Because each storage tier means a price differential and when there’s potentially going to be iPhone SE, 7, 7+, 8, 8+, Xs and Xs+ all on sale, having three price levels makes it harder to separate each device in terms of base cost.

Serious question - have you ever tried iCloud Photo Library? All of your pictures remain visible as thumbnails in the camera roll, visually no different. The full image is recalled from iCloud when you tap to enlarge. If not accessed again within a certain time it then reverts to the thumbnail on the local storage. In my experience, absolutely seamless and not using it is simply wasting space to cover the very remote possibility of being unable to access a full res image if you’re without a data connection.

Honestly, Apple has shown recently that they don't mind multiple skus, of course a base of 128gb would be ideal, but based on what they've done recently, there's no reason to think they cannot do a 3 tier storage system, 64/256/512.

Same arguments people used to justify the 16GB base for so long. The price doesn't have to increase for them to increase the base storage to 128GB.

Ah, we're in the 'double the storage chips doesn't cost any extra money' world now.

Well I keep all my photos on the camera roll from snapchat and camera from my first iphone 4 to now.

Last time I used itunes to transfer photos to iphone it was a really bad process and really annoying, not a case of drag and drop like every other device out in the world.

I have a lot of group conversations and share a lot of pictures and memories from university days and it's convenient for me to have it on my camera roll at all times.

64 256 and 512 mb, is wrong, the base should be 128, it fits the pattern but that is just bad for customers like me. Paying a premium already, and having a pay a premium on top for what is standard across other devices in the industry.
I’m only using 18GB out of 64 but I tend to agree with you. 128GB is the sweet spot, hence they avoid it, it’s a pricing strategy end of.

So the ones who find this 64gb storage acceptable are ones who don’t take photos or record 4K video. So really for you guys the new base end model will do you fine for the future. Let’s increase the storage for us who like to use our phones for dedicated photography and videography.

I ain’t gonna pay for hardware I don’t use. I prefer that the base model has 64GB and that you can buy the 256GB model.

If the Xs Max comes out with 64gb starting, that will be an absolute insult.

£1000-1100 phone with 64gb is unacceptable in today's markets.

They made the same mistake with the iPhone X, no surprise sales were way lower than what they expected, and no surprise they are discontinuing the X. People were forced to get the 256gb model because 64gb simply wasn't enough for power users who were spending £1000 on the base model.

Currently using 80gb out of 128gb, so I would hope for the base model to be 128gb.

So what do we think, base model iPhone Xs Max starting at 64gb or will they do the right thing and start it at 128gb?
i'm not even max 16 GB iphone 5s

64GB was insult for a £1000 last year, it's an insult regardless of model, if you're charging that much.

wish Apple would follow Samsung’s note 9 and offer 128gb for $999 but i know that would never happen

Apple do it as they can as people will buy it

Apple are giving cheaper options via iPhone 9 and 5.8 inch iPhone xs

I’m expecting the 512GB iPhone Xs plus to be £1300

64 is fine for me with optimize photos enabled. And the X is not being discontinued because it had 64 base storage (they could easily just add more storage). It’s being discontinued as it makes no sense to sell it when you are bringing three new Face ID devices to the market

Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!
I see some analysts now predict a price of $850 for the supppsedly cheaper iPhone XC or 9 model:

http://9to5mac.com/2018/09/08/analysts-admit-they-were-wrong-about-iphone-x-predict-849-price-for-6-1-lcd-iphone/

Now using Apples pricing in the U.K. that means £850. So if that’s £850 for the cheapest model in 64GB, you can bet the XS Plus 64GB will be around £1200. Good luck trying to sell that Apple.. I don’t know about anyone here but that’s over my comfortable spending limit for a 64GB iPhone.
Can only hope the analysts are wrong..

If the base model has 64 go then it’s going to be cheaper than if the base model has 128 gb

Competitors do not run on iOS so that is a non-option for most looking at upgrading their iPhones.

They may not even have a 512GB option. It will not be an issue for me, either way.

Exactly! This is what most Android fans don’t get. When they make the argument that so many phones out there have way better specs and more features for way less money, that’s not the point, they don’t run freaking iOS!

Definitely want to see 128 as the base offering for the XS+.
I do have iCloud storage but have not gotten into using it.
I keep a little more than1000 full res photos on my device.
For music we have over 30,000 files in iTunes alone, that doesn’t count the ones we keep in folders outside of iTunes and add directly to playlists on the phone. I like a wide range of music and keep almost 100 playlists on the phone, one of them containing 3 days of music.
If possible I’d like to get 256gb storage if I can afford it. 64gb just won’t cut it this time around.

Luckily for the OP nobody will force him to buy it if Apple does produce. 64GB XS Max.

I agree IMO 128GB should be the entry level size. I like everything download to my X, so I opted for the 256GB. Apart from my MacBook, my X is my main device 24/7 so I like to keep HD iTunes films on it along with my surfing videos & movies, photo albums and music playlists etc.
My last iPhone a 4S had 16GB and I spent its entire time fighting over storage space with it. Nightmare! Once it ran out of space when syncing from my MacBook so it decided to remove 3/4 of the songs from numerous playlists on my actual MACBOOK!!!!!!!!!! And these were playlists that had taken years to build (luckily I had a back up from a few weeks before).

I really feel for all the overseas buyers where the prices are astronomical. Those VAT and other factors make the iPhone almost unobtainable, it’s a shame.
I’ve been buying Apple equipment since ‘87. Went into debt to get my first SE then it just grew from there.
I don’t mind paying a little premium when I (personally) feel it’s justified, but the last handful of years I’ve really become to resent the marketing tricks and price gouging of Apple and other tech/software companies.
No, I don’t think I’m entitled to anything, but cost vs. value is becoming more of an understanding and a balance. Example: goodbye Adobe and Quark, and big hello to Affinity.

I admit, I feel a bit dumb for getting the 256GB X model last year, and never putting more than 40GB on it. I probably only got $50 extra in resale for it, so I basically blew $150. Oh well live and learn, I'll go down to 64GB this next time.

Although I have 600+ movies/shows in iTunes, I rarely watch them on my iPhone. And I have <2000 pictures/videos. Since I had to upgrade to 200GB iCloud storage (family sharing), I can always dump something big into the Files app if I need to. 128GB would probably be the best for me, but 256GB is just ridiculous. I don't mind it on the iPad, since I can throw a dozen movies on there for a long trip.

Or you can wait a year or two, and you can still buy it new at a much lower price. This trend of being first and getting the latest is just silly.
