Fixed it !!

I had the same problem and read thorugh many interesting comments on here to find a solution. I happen to be in the USA today and went into Apple to find out if this was a genuine Euro Cap on the iPod. They didn't have a clue !!

So back onto the Internet where I came across http://www.askdavetaylor.com/remove_max_volume_limit_apple_ipod.html
Read it and enjoy - I have fixed mine and it works perfectly. But be responsible people, you don't want to go deaf :)

umm guys?

:cool:you could try this, even though its prob a bit annoying for those who have over 10gb of songs since its gonna kill them for the wait, but ! you can raise the volume of the songs on itunes, just choose the songs and right click after that choose the properties i think(well the one you choose to edit artists and song name) and then choose options on the top tabs then you can maximise your volume. you can do it with multiple songs since your not changing the artist or anything. I tried it with some of my songs and i accidentally put it too loud lol so im thinking you could give it a try !

I have an 80GB classic and Its not as loud as my old iPod 5G. But listening to music even at the classic's max volume is bad for your hearing. Im a drummer and wear ear plugs when performing/practicing to limit volume and protect my hearing. Listening to an iPod at high volume is just as bad.

Some people have said they are turning up the volume to drown out background noise. The iPod headphones are bad sound insulators, it would be best to buy some noise canceling or isolating headphones instead, which lower or even eliminate background noise so you can have the volume lower but still hear the music clearly.

Is this actually solving the problem? The EU cap that is. Sounds in the article there that it only removes the volume limit in the ipod, wich isnt the volume cap. no?
Otherwise i'll buy a new ipod asap, and it'll be great. Just wanna be sure that they don't fool me again, them bastards :)
Thanks

Wonder if someone could find the key in the firmware like they did for the old ipods. See below

This is a simple ten steps procedure to manually patch 5.5G Video iPods under Windows using HxD as hexadecimal editor:

1. First, plug the iPod to the USB port of your computer, after that wait for iTunes to come up (if configured to autostart) and quit it WITHOUT ejecting the iPod.
2. Start HxD (latest version is 1.6.1.0), click on the "Open Disk" button (you can find it just below the "View" menu).
3. You should see a "Removable Disk 1", select it, uncheck "Open as Readonly" and click "OK".
4. Click "OK" to skip the warning message.
5. Now click Search->Find (Ctrl+F) to open the search panel.
6. Type this in the "Search for" text line: 08009fe5940090e5
7. Select datatype "Hex-values" and click "OK".
8. The first string found IS NOT the one we're looking for, push F3 to find next...
9. FOUND! At the end of the selected string you will find the two magic bytes in "capped" position (01 00). Swap them (00 01).
10. Save (Ctrl+S), close (Ctrl+F4) and eject the iPod from the tray bar icon.

The iPod should now reboot. Go to Settings->Volume Limit and raise the volume bar to the max.

Now your iPod volume has been boosted.

Just for the record, i tried this on a 160GB ipod classic and it couldn't find the matching hex value.

You really shouldn't be listening to music that loud. If you want to save your hearing of course.

Unless of course you are already going deaf which would explain why it's hard to hear it.

Don't know how to increase it any more though. Maybe through the equaliser?

......I think the person was asking for help, not a patronising put down. If you dont have an answer, then maybe just don't comment. The world is full of egomaniacs, yet sparsely populated with helpers

Just to sumarize it all:

- It has been 3 years of people trying to fix this;

- gopod doesn't work with classics;

- putting an US firmware isn't working either;

- Hex doesn't find that value on classics;

...I think the only solution for me is to buy an US ipod?

I'm really pissed off, btw ^^

Heya guys!

I read through the whole thread and I noticed it started dieing out after the fifth page..

Anyways, I might have a solution for you guys!

http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/download.php

Mp3gain. It's a program that sets all your mp3 files into the same volume level. So you don't have to change the volume each time a low or high song comes up. The magical thing about this program is not that it's so easy to use (which it is) but that you can decide WHAT volume level it should put all the songs too. Normal is around 89db, which I think is the eu cap. You can change it to whatever you want, although when I put it on 100db the sound was pretty bad. So don't increase it too much..

Anyways it's not the best solution for low volume, considering it doesnt increase it that much. I'm having the same problem as you guys and I have the iPod Nano, the most recent one, 6th generation which is the mini-one with multi touch.

Anyways I'm going to the store tomorrow and see what they'll say, since I can't really turn it in after opening the box and ****.

Hi all,

I just thought that I'd let you know that after I bought a new iPod Classic 160Gb from Apple UK's online store and suffered the same volume issues as most of you, I have completely got round the problem by purchasing a FiiO E1 Portable Headphone Amplifier for about 15 quid.

Now I know that this is less than ideal, but as well as removing the volume restriction the sound quality is also noticably better too so I would definitely recommend one to those that are suffering this stupid, stupid, lame-ass EU restriction crap - especially given how cheap it is.

ipod 160 classic poor volume

its a joke,
I purchased a 160gb ipod classic, the volume was that poor i took it back thinking there was a manufacturing fault, it was exchanged for another one the same and this is no different, that will be going back too!!

Hi all,

This is my first post, but I've been lurking. :)

I just got a new 160gb iPod Classic for a trip abroad. Because I've had an older 60gb model for years and years now and been pleased with it, I flew off to work assuming this one would be fine for the trip.

The volume level, however - even with soundcheck off and even with the limit set to max - is utterly feeble on all decent non-in-ear headphones I've tried. I wish I could give it back right now.

People who talk about the dangers of listening to music loud are missing the point. We all agree we should look after our ears. And most modern pop music (which is mastered way too hot because of this stupid loudness war) sounds great despite the volume cap - but it's impossible to properly enjoy any ambient, classical, electronic, non-mainstream or older music (that's been mastered to a normal level) on this thing. Not all music is recorded to the same volume - and most music except for pop on nice headphones comes through too weakly to enjoy even in a quiet room, let alone on a train or plane!

My old iPod is far louder than this one. On the same headphones, I don't need to hit maximum volume to enjoy any of my music.

Apple have messed up pretty atrociously here. My friend complained about the same with her new Nano - saying that she couldn't listen to most of her music (except for a few really loud albums.) I should have been more wary because of her experience.

I hope a solution comes through...

Hello

Does anyone knows if installing Rockbox on iPOD Classi 6th Gen , will free the iPOD from the stupid EU Volume Cap?

I guess the EU Volume Cap could be implemented on the software side or on the hardware end.

To limit the headphone amp ouput on the hardware side, it would be a matter of adding some resistors, or change values of the resistor that set the amplifier gain.
But I don't think Apple would go this route has it would not be cost eficient in terms of production to have different PCBs, or circuits/component values for each part of the world.

It's more viable Economic wise to limit the volume for EU on the software/firmware.

So I guess if the EU Volume Cap is a Firmware limitation of the EU sold iPODs then installing Rockbox (replaces the original firmware) would remove that volume limit
