Please, Apple, don't forsake the Classic! Capacity and simplicity for music lovers above all else!

I'm with you. Listening to music on my iPod touch was such so clumsy that I eventually gave it up and now use only the Classic and Shuffle for music. But one problem is that the Classic's interface has reached the pinnacle of utility, and Apple always feels it has to reinvent the wheel in order to give users a gimmicky new way to do things (for example the Shuffle 3G vs. 2G). I suspect Apple will either drop the Classic in favor of trying to steer users to some other, less optimal iPod for music, or mess with the design and make it less user-friendly.

Just bought a New Kenwood deck that works great with my old 5g Video, I don't want to put my 64gb touch in their but would like more space So I ws thinking of getting a classic as a dedicated card player, I'll wait to see wht the refresh brings and then maybe hunt down an old one if the new model is a dissapointment.

What are you guys smoking? Classic getting a camera? The classic isn't even their flagship product anymore, it's the Touch.

Look at last years iTunes event invitation, the iPod the silhouette was holding had no click wheel = Touch.

Something I would like to see with the storage space: audio quality. Market it as the best sound by setting the newest classic with higher bit rates. I had to go to the trouble of converting my music to lossless. If they could give it near-lossless sound quality, and market it as that, I, at least, would buy one.

I don't get it. Even my click-wheel iPod from 2004 can be filled up with lossless files only. What difference does it make to you, how they market it? Nevertheless, I kind of like the idea that Apple would have this one model where they use higher quality components (DAC, earphones...) all chosen to deliver superior audio quality (which some audiophiles, if I remember correctly, routinely criticize on the iPod). Of course that would create the impression, that the rest of their iPod lineup is of subpar audio quality, so I'm not sure they would want to deliver that message, especially when this higher quality model would probably remain a niche product.

I meant, even if they don't increase the storage, try to design it for uncompressed audio. Market it as the ipod with the best audio quality, and it could do fairly well. I realize this is not the clearest idea, but I think it would be a cool concept.

I think they would use a bigger HDD and when SSD's get cheaper (or flash memory) they would go to 256GB, but still that's ridiculously much IMO
EDIT: And still, the touch can fit as much Flash Memory as the Classic, I think they're going to drop it :(

I still have my original iPod Video 60 GB (when they first offered them in black) and it is still my favorite iPod. I would hate to see the Classic die. I would much rather lose my iPhone before I lost my iPod. I use it constantly. Mainly though, it's my music in the truck and it's my portable HD. Couldn't be replaced with an iTouch or Nano for the following reasons.

1) In the car it sits under my center armrest/console and I can easily use the click wheel controls to play my 35+ GB of music with out looking. Yes, perhaps a higher capacity Nano could replace this duty of my iPod, but never a touch. I need the tactile response from the click wheel to allow me to keep my eyes on the road. This isn't the only duty of my iPod though.

2) I'm in freelance graphic design and I keep my latest Adobe applications installed on it (as well as many others) along with all of my fonts. I run the apps from the iPod when I have to use someone else's Mac so that I know I will have the App versions and fonts I need to open and work on almost any project. It's a life saver when you need to open a file which was created by a newer version than is installed on the Mac you're connected to.

I may be a rare case in a relatively small profession, but to have this all in the same package when I'm traveling really makes this device one of the best gadgets ever created. None out there right now (save the Classic) can match this device in that regard. I will be upgrading to a Classic soon as I fear an HD fail is imminent. I was just hoping to hear something about at least one more upgrade to the Classic before I do. I am happy to go buy the current model, but I do fear the next upgrade might be the last for the Classic and I want to take advantage of getting the latest one before they potentially discontinue them.

I do hope someone at Apple keeps tabs on forums and comments like all of ours to know that there is still a demand for them (albeit not as substantial as other iPods). If they don't alter the shell at all (I don't need a bigger screen personally) I think they can keep producing them in smaller numbers over the years with out suffering a terrible loss from the production overhead.

Let's hope they keep it alive for a few more years at least.

Long Live The Classics!

I would love to see a Classic with an SSD... 80 or 128gb, they're not too expensive.
I need a clickwheel-ipod with enough capacity, iOS just sucks on my iTouch!

Im considering buying the 160 gb classic, but im aware that it is likely to be either chucked or upgraded in the coming month's. I have up to this point just kept 8gb of my music on my touch but its annoying to have to constantly delete and swap music. I don't want to get a larger memory touch as i them as over-priced and all i want is to have all of my music on one device. Should i wait for a new classic or just buy the current one?

I may be not right, but didn't I recall hearing Steve Jobs or someone from Apple saying that in the future every iPod is going to be a touch screen? Hmmm. I don't the Classic is going to get a camera or a touch screen this year, but maybe next year? Who knows.

I'd really love to see the iPod Classic become the media player on the go type of device, or the Apple TV mobile. Give it 240GB of storage space so I can load it up with 60+ movies and 100+ TV shows (some in HD) and then take it with me on vacation.

Let me control it via remote without having to drag a dock with me

Let me have full access to the iPod functions via a remote or iPod Touch or something

Let me be able to have some DVR functions maybe

Give my iPod the Apple TV or something better UI

Let me have better audio quality

Keep the click wheel and the HDD please!

I think there going to have to change the iPod UI this year, it's getting pretty stale now that they have had the same Cover Flow UI since 2007. Better Audio Quality is a must since most audiophiles use the Classic to hold their huge librarys. It would also be cool for the iPod Classic to act like an Apple TV.

Yeah, give it 2 years when SSD's price drop just like the hard drives did.

Yeah, I would love to see Apple advertise the new iPod Classic with a motto like "The best sounding iPod ever."

the current iPod classic just doesn't crack it. I mean sure quality-wise compared to a Nano or iOS device (that just sounds awful) it is pretty good. But listening to Music on my iPod 1G just beats the hell outta it. It'd better have some serious gigabytes, a click wheel and QUALITY!

Big Post of Things

iPod Nano...well, it just has no 'feel' to it. i like knowing weather or not i am still carrying the ipod. its just too light and small. and now it got even smaller which was a **** move, i want it to stay the same size and none o that touch screen BS. making it SSD would make it lighter and i would hate that. and keeping it the same is just a stupid idea too. though all of us have our own musical preferences, no one of us can argue...iPod Classic, forever the best.

Some suggestions:
- Make more HDD capacities. I had an 80GB Black that just got the Syncing glitch that is very common, and i'm just not in the mood to pay as much for something i will never fill up. i have 40GB of music and if i wanted to watch movies on the thing i woulda just gone for the iPhone. These are the listings i'd put up: 40GB, 80GB, 160GB, 220GB. have the ultimate music player at max power with a 200GB drive for those who have terrabytes of music.(believe me i know some).

- more colors than just black and silver (not too many)

- Radio is always nice

- more environmentally friendly for marketing? not really a factor in my choosing.

- keep the general look it has (dont make the back look like the iPhone or the touch. keep it as is it feels great.)

- maybe a speaker like the touch? again, not a factor for me, but might be for some.

- keep the click wheel PLZ!!!

- make a sort of setting for those who wish to use it simply as an external hard drive. like an app. and have a download online to fix if you want to revert back to ipod mode. (dont ask me its just something my friends and i were talking about)

- have a sort of iPod visualizer to keep you busy and entertained.

That's about all i can think of at the moment, so keep it up apple, and keep the classics rollin' :apple:

peace, Doberman211

I want a flash based classic with 128GB. I'm thinking about getting a 64GB touch because the classic didn't get updated, but I really don't want to blow $400+ on it. I want an ipod for music and the lag on the current classic is holding me back.

I'm in the exact same situation as you.

I always think about this. Next year will be the 10th anniversary of the iPod. Is Steve Jobs skipping this year's update for something big next year? I thought having 128 GB flash in the iPod Classic would be nice along with making it slimmer (Is that possible with 128 GB flash?). There are things that can be done to improve the iPod Classic.

I know in theory that HDD's are more delicate, but I still haven't had a HDD break on me. I'm still using a 4gb Microdrive that came with my SLR camera in 2006 and my 2007 5.5G iPod is still as good as it always was.

I've never dropped an iPod though. I'd imagine that's a fairly quick way to break the drive.

I owned the first-generation iPod for 3 years and have been using a click-wheel iPod for 6 years now. They were built like absolute tanks. I've dropped both of them numerous times, including drops on concrete while running (actually more like a throw). I've brought them to the woods and used them doing various sports activities. Never had a single problem.

Decision

Is it worth buying the current iPod Classic? Last time I played with one, the clickwheel was not as sensitive and smooth as the iPod Video 5G. I have a tough decision between the iPod classic and the new iPod touch. All I do really is listen to music. Of course the touchscreen and the camera with video on the iPod touch is tempting but I do miss the nice clickwheel. The iPod classic gets 36 hours of audio and the new iPod touch gets 40 hours of audio. Any suggestions?

I'm having a hard time deciding too. I recently went to the Apple store and played with the current iPod classic. The click wheel wasn't as smooth and the lag really bothered me. So basically the only thing keeping me away from buying a classic the that it's hard drive based. Because of this, I'm considering getting the new touch, but I hate how it's so expensive and I don't want to have to deal with all the problems people are having. All I really want is a flash based, standard iPod (like a classic or nano 3rd gen) with about 64GB. I guess I can wait until the next iPod event. :( I really want a new iPod now, but nothing seems like an ideal option for me.

I may wait as well. The iPod classic was not updated and unlikely possibility that it may get updated before the next event or they could update it for the 10th anniversary.
